When was a daughter legally 'of age' in Virginia in the early 1800s? For example, a will reads "to daughter Elizabeth when of age a horse, saddle and bridle worth 25 pounds and reasonable bed and furniture."
Is this legal age of maturity set by the state and has it changed over time? This will was written in 1805 and I'm trying to estimate her birth year. If the legal age was 21, then she was born between 1784 and 1805. If the legal age was younger, that would narrow the birth year estimate.
Thanks for any clarification on this.
