You are funny. I wanted to know about this legal thing, since there were obviously middle names used...maybe it wasn't used in legal documents? Or was this illegal use of middle names a cause for incarceration? They must have just passed them down amongst themselves? I do understand the use of "nick-names" and that Mary Polly was often listed because Polly was the nickname for Mary, since in those days a Molly was a woman of ill repute. So perhaps this is where the double first name came into being, so often used in the south..that way they weren't breaking the law? I've just never heard of such a thing as "commoners" not allowed to have middle names.
