Thanks, excellent information. Although the obit says he was born in Massachusetts, his birthplace was listed in most censuses as New Jersey. (In 1880 it is listed as Virginia, along with every other single entry on the page; in 1900 as New Hampshire.) One census lists a son, Stephen, which was his father's name. Do you know of any sources which might list his parents' names? (Stephen Clark and Phebe Meeker Clark of Randolph, New Jersey). I'm also interested in the record which gives his birthdate--maybe I can find a record in New Jersey which matches. In any case, more grist for the mill--thanks again.
