Surnames: COON
I am a fairly new researcher and am seeking information on my Coon family. Theearliest record I have of an ancestor was the marriage of George Washington Coon to Mary Burket North in Pickaway County, Ohio in 1804 (it appears that this may have been a part of Botetourt County back then). George probably had a brother Samuel and possibly an uncle Jacob. George is said to be from Pennsylvania. I don't know if that means he was born there or not. The only
reference to the parents of George is that the father "was of German ancestry."
George and his descendants moved frequently; from Ohio to Indiana, to Wisconsin,to Iowa by the 1840's - always looking for better farm land apparently.

A few of the wives of Georges sons were from Virginia and one specifically from Botetourt County. Seeing a map of Botetourt County in the late 1700's, I see that that covers a lot of territory.

There has, of course, been the usual confusion over spelling. It is my understanding that "Coon" cannot be correct spelling for a German surname. Samuel is in some
Ohio records as Koon. George W. as Cone.

I am looking for any information about Coons that might match the individuals that I am seeking?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
