Daniel Croft & Mary Hamilton Botetourt & Roanoke Virginia

Do any of these people sound familiar to anyone??

In an earlier post, I had listed David B. Croft's birth year as around 1835. I am now sure his birth year was around 1813-1815. His parents' marriage is listed as June 1814.

David was the son of Daniel Croft and Mary Hamilton. She was the dt. of John Hamilton also of Botetourt Co.
Daniel was born in Prussia. I dont know what year he came to America or who his parents were.
I have reason to believe that Daniel and Mary lived in the area of Botetourt Co that later became Roanoke Co. History says that David was born in Botetourt, but he mustered with the Fincastle Greys in Roanoke Co for the war.

From what info I can find, it seems that David and Caroline raised their family in nearby Franklin County then moved to Big Lick (later to become Roanoke city)

His obit in the 1910 Roanoke Times says he married young, but he was at least 50 years old when he married Caroline Chafin of Bedford Co Va in 1865. They raised a large family then moved to Big Lick. The children mostly lived and worked in Roanoke around the Railroad and associated industries.

David and Caroline were my ggrandparents

My name is Jason Darby, and I am currently researching my own personal family history. My connections to the Riffey family comes through my maternal great-great grandfather, Jesse A. Riffey, who was the on of Samuel R. Riffey, who was the son of Minor Riffey. Beyond that however, there seems to be a dead end.

Famly oral history (and trees here on ancestry) list Minor's father as Samuel Riffey, born in 1780 in Virginia (what would eventually become Roanoke county, but was then Botetourt county) and died in 1850. A distant relation in the Wrightsman family (the maiden name of Mary Riffey, Minor's wife) has stated that Minor's father was a John Riffey, and his mother was Nancy Buchanen. A Brubaker family history posted on rootsweb states that John Riffey Jr was the son of a James Samuel Riffey.

This has all made everything confusing, and any help clarifying this mystery would be greatly appreciated. I need to find out who Minor's father truly was, and if possible, the name of his mother as well. Thank you for your assisstance in this matter.

- Jason K. Darby

My 4th great grandparents are John Custer born 31 Aug 1784 in York
Co., Pa. He died 2 July 1863 in Warren Co., Tn. He is the son of
Johannes Custer and Anna Catherina Gohn. (Coon) He married Mary "Polly"
Smiley born 8 Feb 1787 in Va. She died 10 Aug 1863 in Warren Co., Tn. His
father Johannes Custer (Custard) left his will in 1838 in Botetourt Co.,
Va They lived east of Fincastle near the Mill Creek section.

Mary "Polly" Smiley is the daughter of James Smiley and mother unknown.
The Smiley's and Custer's lived in Botetourt Co., Va. in the
1770-1780's. They lived near Fincastle.

I am trying to find who James Smiley is and his parentage.
In Virginia there was Alexander, Andrew, Daniel, Walter, Sr. and
Walter, Jr and James Smiley. They were in Augusta, Rockbridge and then
Botetourt County, Va.

James Smiley would have to have a birthdate of 1767 or earlier.

Any information would greatly be appreciated on James Smiley whose
daughter Mary "Polly" Smiley married John Custer (dates above)

Marianne Dillow

I found William V. Wilkerson's grave in Lexington, VA. I have not found Missouri Agnes Beckner Wilkerson's grave, although my brother says she is buried near Arcadia. I don't know the name of the cemetery. The last time we were there was many years ago and we had to take a 4-wheel drive truck to get to the cemetery and get out and walk the rest of the way (it was on private property). There was a Jellystone Park Campground not far from there. That's all I can remember. Does anybody know the name or exact whereabouts of this cemetery? Agnes Wilkerson was my great-grandmother.

I am seeking information on the parentage of Joseph Montgomery and Charlotte Arter. This couple was married in Botetourt County on April 21, 1837. Both appear to have been born around 1815 in Virginia. Both appear to have had fathers from Ireland and mothers from Virginia.
The first 4 or 5 children of this family were born in Botetourt. They were: Mary, born circa. 1838; Elizabeth, born circa. 1840; Minerva R., born Feb. 1842; Martha Francis, born Apr. 1845; and James Madison, born Aug. 1848 or 49 (James may have been born in Rockbridge Co.)
This family moved prior to 1850 to Cabell Co. then on to Ky. for a brief time, then to Lawrence and finally Jackson Counties in Ohio.
I strongly suspect links to the families of Samuel and Lucy Montgomery of Botetourt Co. and of Hugh and Sarah Montgomery of (both) Botetourt and Rockbrigde Counties.

Thank you for your time.

Perry Montgomery

Hello,
I am looking for a John Hiner who was assigned guardianship of Jacob and Elizabeth Deardorff in 1791. They are the children of Henry Deardorff who died in Botetourt VA in 1791. Both Jacob and Elizabeth were under the age of 14 at the time. I think I have seen a John Hiner married to a Mary Deardorff but I dead end there. Elizabeth marries a Stephen Staley in 1809 in Botetourt. An Elizabeth Sarah Stailey, Stephen' sister, married a Jacob Dearduff in 1808 in Botetourt Va. Are these two brother and sister? How are they related to John Hiner? I found a John Heiner married to a Mary Deardorff. How is she related to Harry and are any of them related to Peter Dierdorff son of Anthony Deirdorff and Anna Marie Yeager?
Jacob and Sarah move to Brush Creek Ohio where he died in 1837.
Thanks,
LeAnne Deardeuff

Since receiving information that my Alex J Crawford was married to Margaret Drummond, I have since come across conflicting information. Ancestry on the web shows that Alex J Crawford was the s/o William Crawford & Margaret Kilpatrick, rather than Margaret Drummond. Alex was born in 1803 in Botetourt Co. Va. and the 1850 Census shows him as 47 yrs. which makes the dates match. Other information shows 2 wives for his Father, William Crawford. 1st wife was Mary McRoberts b. 1755 d. 1784 by whom he had 5 children. 2nd wife was Margaret Kilpatrick by whom he had 9 children, Alex being the 9th child.
Can anyone out there add to this information to confirm it? I appreciate any information anyone can give. Thanks

Two sons, William and Samuel, also shoemakers, moved to York County, PA by 1850.

Robert Davis enlisted by Capt Isaac Taylor in Botetourt County

My ancestor, Robert Davis appears to have moved to Surry County, NC between 1800 & 1810. He is listed there in the 1810, 1820, 1830, & 1840 US Censuses. In the 1840 census listing he is reported as a revolutionary war veteran aged 85. I believe he is the Rev. War Pensioner listed below**. If so, he was probably living in Botetourt Co, VA when he enlisted in the 1st regiment of the VA line, and he died in Surry County NC where his will was recorded 9 Dec 1841 in the Surry County Will Book 4 page 264. Robert’s will seems to confirm that he & Abigail were parents of Jesse Davis (who was father of America Davis, my mother’s paternal grandmother). In the 1850 US Census for Surry County NC, Abigail is living in the household of her son Jesse Davis, and she is listed as having been born in NY.
Does anyone on the list know
when Capt Isaac Taylor might have enlisted Robert Davis in Botetourt County?
where Capt Isaac Taylor might have enlisted Robert Davis in Botetourt County?
if Robert Davis returned to Botetourt County after the revolutionary war?
if Robert Davis was married to Abigail in Botetourt County?
I will be very grateful for any information or leads about a Robert Davis who might have been born in 1755 and who could have enlisted in the VA line in Botetourt County.
Sincerely,
Byron Bowman
**Southern Campaign American Revolution Pension Statements
Pension Application of Robert Davis: S2500
Transcribed and annotated by C. Leon Harris
State of North Carolina}
County of Surry} SS
On this 14th day of August 1832 personally appeared before the undersigned Jonathan Whitaker, Geo A Jones & Jas Clanton acting justices of the peace for the county of Surry NC Robert Davis a resident of the county & state, aforesaid aged 77 years who being first duly sworn, according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832 that he enlisted in the army of the United States in the year [blank] with Capt Isaac Taylor and served with the 1st regiment of the Virginia line under the following named officers Capt J. Taylor, Major Quirck[?], Col John Montgomery. He enlisted for the term of three years in Bortetot [sic: Botetourt] County Virginia marched to the Mississippi River past the Mississippi he marched to a place called the Illinois Town from thence to the Wabash thence to the Sandusky plains where he was in a battle against the Indians from thence he was marched again to the Iron Banks on the Mississippi [in the part of Virginia that became the state of Kentucky] and thence to the falls of the Ohio where he was wounded in the shoulder & where he remained until discharged by Col Montgomery his discharge he has lost he was during the time engaged in many skirmishes with the Indians During all which time he was a Sergeant Major.

GRAY, WINEMAN, HARRIS families of Botetourte Co., VA.

I am looking for several families of my husband's genealogy. The Gray I am looking for is Claibourne Gray, not sure if first names is spelled that way--He had three children with Emma Hines. Arthur (Archie), Ida Mae, Claybourne Hugh. He died and Emma married Edley Nathan Harris s/o Martin Baker Harris. They had three children and they moved to Auburn, Illinois where other family had moved in the 1870's. I am also looking for the the burial place of Claibourne Gray in VA. I was told he came from Haymakertown, Botetourte Co., Illinois. Also I am looking for the Wineman family--Frederick Wineman--His son Philip also came to Auburn, Sangamon Co., Illinois. So if anyone will share what they know or where I can look for these folks--please contact me. I have lots of Harris info and Wineman infor. Thanks Jan

Need help in the 1700s looking for Robinsons and related families

I guess you can say all roads lead here. I believe our Robinsons lived in Boutetourt County before heading to Franklin County, Kentucky. From Franklin County, Kentucky, the Robinsons moved from Indiana to Iowa. Here is what I believe, but can't prove, so if anyone has any suggestions or directions, I would be greatful. Bare with me as I work backwards..

William Robinson born June of 1773, Virginia (Boutetourt County?) married 24 February 1798 (Franklin County, Kentucky)
Elizabeth Kennedy born about 1775 (Virginia, Boutetourt?)
Together William and Elizabeth had 10 children.

Elizabeth's parents were

Ezekiel Kennedy born about 1757, not sure where, but he served in Captain Murray's volunteers from Boutetourt County. He died about 1839 in Kentucky. Ezekiel was married to I believe

Martha Jane Bennett (could be Beresford not sure)

William's Parents I believe were
John Robinson born about 1735 (Virginia or Pennsylvania)
married in Virginia about 1771 to

Margaret Berrisford/Beresford born about 1745 in Virginia.

From what I have been able to find, Margaret and John had at least 6 children that survived to adulthood, William, George Rogers, Robert, James R, Anne, & Mary.

Margaret's father I believe is
John Beresford

So as you can see I have a lot of I believe and not a lot of facts. It seems everywhere I look it leads me back to this county, now I am having trouble finding the Robinsons< Kennedys, and Beresford that match in Boutetourt County.
I will be honest I have never researched this far back. Before now I have found all the "lost" children of William and Mary Robinson to fill in that part of the family tree...now I am ready to start the hard part. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone is researching this family I would be glad to share what information I have on them. I currently have around 4500 individuals that descended from John Robinson and am still working on that ...thank you
Take Care,
Denise

My McCafferty ancestors lived and were taxed in this area of the county. I would like to be able to narrow down the area where they lived.
They owned land that bordered land owned by both Joseph Robinson and William Carvin. The discription of the location stated that it was located between Carvin's Creek and Buffalo Creek. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

New website for Bakers with Virginia origins

The Pamunkey Bakers Association -- an informal group of any and all descendants of Thomas and Dorothy Davenport Baker of Colonial Virginia -- is proud to announce the launch of our new website:

http://www.pamunkeybakers.com

Complete with message board (requires registration), photo gallery (where folks can upload photographs, documents and records relating to the Pamunkey Bakers - also requires registration), research reports and a full database of Baker-Davenport descendants (corrections welcome!), the website offers a focus for research into the origins and scope of our branch of the Baker family.

Association members lay claim to being Pamunkey Bakers through the marriage of Thomas Baker (c1711-c1777) to Dorothy Davenport (1716-c1790), whose grandfather Davis Davenport is well-documented as an early landowner in the Pamunkey Neck region of Virginia. Davis Davenport's lands adjoined those of an earlier Thomas Baker, and discovering whether and how that earlier Thomas is linked to our Thomas -- as grandfather, grand-uncle or other relative, perhaps -- is one of the purposes of the website.

The website also hopes to trace our Baker family as it grew and spread out -- through Virginia, in Caroline, Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, Botetourt and Montgomery Counties, among others; into North Carolina, in Burke, Wilkes, Buncombe, and Yancey Counties, among others; into South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama; and west into Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and more. So we particularly welcome all Bakers with Virginia roots, and hope you'll look to see if perhaps you connect to us (DNA testing is a great research tool!). Anyone out there descended from Martin Baker who married Phoebe Snodgrass in Botetourt County just before the Revolution?

Come visit, sit a spell, share a story, post a query, add your branch to the family tree.

Based on the next will in the Will Book the County Clerk is James McDowell.
Now for the strange part. It appears that for Fleming Caldwell's will, instead of being signed by James McDowell it is signed by T???? McDowell. Alongside of it there appears to be the word "Wife".
If anyone cares to look at this it is in Will Bk P:42 at the courthouse in Fincastle.
Anyone ever heard of the Clerk's wife signing for him? Oh-I can't find a James McDowell in the Botetourt County census with a wife whose first name would start with a T.
Thoughts!
Doug

Lee’s in Rockingham County and Botetourt County VA

I’m trying to connect a William Lee, who first shows up in 1817, Botetourt County VA, when he is married at age about 32. There were other Lee’s in Botetourt at that time, but I’ve not been able to find a connection. One of these Lee’s was Zachariah Lee, could he be of the same Lees, in or from, Rockingham County VA, a Zachariah Lee, was there in this time frame, and I think he was from a “large” family, and had a several sons himself.

William Lee married a much younger lady, and they removed to Fentress County TN. There could be a Lee family association with the following names, Oney (young wife’s maiden name), Madera, Bartholet, Quinlan or Vanquelon, or even Newton.

Any help, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Al
death of Evelyn Dickey Cronise, 1924, Roanoke VA

November 1924
unknown church bulletin
Botetourt County VA

Death of Mrs. M. C. Cronise

Mrs. Evelyn Dickey Cronise, wife of Marshall Cronise, died at her home, 1401 Melrose Avenue, Roanoke, Virginia, November 26, 1924. She was the daughter of Matthew and Evelyn Booze, and was born March 31, 1852, in the Wheatland neighborhood, Botetourt County. She was married to M. C. Cronise by the Rev. Peter Shickel, September 5, 1871. To them were born fourteen children, twelve of whom are living, viz: Mrs. O. S. Housman, Springwood, Va.; Mrs. C. W. Bream, Biglerville, Pa.; C. E. Cronise, Springwood, Va.; Mrs. E. M. Honts, Walkersville, Md.; Mrs. W. L. Loop, Buchanan, Va.; J. C. Cronise, Springwood, Va.; H. W. Cronise, Roanoke, Va.; E. J. Cronise, Springwood, Va.; Mrs. E. W. Reynolds, Troutville, Va.; Mrs. R. R. Obenshain, Roanoke, Va.; W. M. Cronise, Roanoke, Va.; and Mrs. Owen Secrist, Memphis, Tenn.

In early life she professed faith in Jesus as her Savior and united with Wheatland Lutheran Church, remaining a faithful member until death. She was a faithful wife, a tender, loving mother, a kind and sympathetic friend and neighbor. We shall miss her in the home, in the church and in the community.

The funeral service was held at Wheatland Church on Thanksgiving day, by her former pastor, Rev. J. D. Utt.

Text: "They rest from their labors and their works do follow them."--Rev. 14:13.

The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The large congregation of friends and relatives attested the esteem in which she was held. After the funeral services she was laid to rest near the church she had loved, there to await the call of her God.

J. D. UTT

death of Celeste Obenshain Cronise, 1924, Botetourt Co VA

September 1924
unknown church bulletin
Wheatland VA

Mrs. Celeste Obenshain Cronise, wife of Mr. F. E. Cronise, departed this life Aug. 30, 1924, aged 42 years, 8 months, and 15 days. Early in life, she connected herself with the Methodist Episcopal Church, but later transferred her membership to Wheatland Evangelical Lutheran church and remained a faithful member of the same until death. It was the privilege of the writer to minister to her in spiritual things during the last days and hours of her earthly life, which she seemed to appreciate very much, and for which she expressed her sincere gratitude. As she realized that death was approaching, the thought of leaving her loved ones troubled her in a measure, but resting her faith on God's Word, she expressed herself ready to go if it was the Lord's will, believing that He would care for those loved ones left behind. She was a devoted wife and mother, thinking more about their welfare in a general way than of her own individual interests.

The funeral services were conducted by her pastor at Wheatland E. L. Church on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 31, in the presence of a very large congregation, half of whom it was estimated could not get in the church. She leaves a devoted husband, eight children, and three sisters to mourn their loss. We recommend them to Him who has said, "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."

H. E. H. SLOOP, Pastor

John Bowen

On July 8, 1788, John Bowen purchased some land from John Withers for 175 pounds. The land was described in the deed on file at the Botetourt County Court House in Fincastle as "...containing two hundred and ninety acres by Survey bearing date the twentieth day of March, one thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy one, lying and being in the said County on Craigs Creek a branch of James River joining and above Smith's Upper Tract and bounded as followeth..." etc. The land was later sold by John Bowen and his wife "Betsy". I know where the land was. I know when and where John died. I believe I know where he was buried. I know "about" when his wife died. And, I believe I know where she was buried. What I don't know is: where John came from, who his parents were, what his wife's maiden name was and where she came from. My John Bowen is not to be conmfused with the John Bowen who lived on the north side of the James River in Botetourt County. That John moved to Georgia and died there in the 1790's. My John Bowen died in Montgomery County before August 9, 1826, when his estate was appraised. John and Elizabeth (Betty - Betsy)has seven children: Bathia, William, Mary, John, Hugha, Magadalene and James. Can anyone provide any additional information for my John Bowen and/or Elizabeth?
