Surnames: Lawson - Smith - Noel - Tales
Someone else may be able to answer better than I can but my guess is that they used different words than we do today. The next census 1900 they list him as Insane. He simply could have been retarded ( a word they don't use today either)or deaf.

Phillip Smith - 14 - Sept 1885 - son - m - b - VA
Smith Elizabeth - 14? Sept 1888 - daughter - f - b - VA
Arthur Noel - 13 - May 1887 Grandson - m - b - VA
Thomas Noel - 10 - Sept 1889 Grandson - m - b - VA
Lawrence Noel - 7 - May 1893 Grandson - m - b - VA
George Tales - 2 - May 1898 Grandosn - m - b - VA

I forgot to say that on the 1880 census that I sent living next door to Edmond and Courtney are Isaac Lawson age 82 born VA VA VA and Usley Lawson age 45 wife VA VA VA
