The Roper family was amongst the earliest settlers of Charles City and New Kent County. John Roper was on the Vestry of St. Peter's Church, New Kent County and many Ropers are listed amongst the names in the St. Peter's Parish Register.
Ropers were churchmen in Canterbury, Kent County, England, and several Ropers were early ministers in Virginia, North Carlina and South Carolina. It is well known that Rev. David Roper, of Charles City County, founded the Second Baptist Church in Richmond.
Another Roper family historian recently pointed out to me that there was a "Roper Church Road" in New Kent County/Charles City County. Does anyone know the ORIGIN of the name of this road? Was there once a "Roper Church" in either Charles City or New Kent County?
ANy help in explaining how this road came to be named would be appreciated!
