Is this the David Fulk, born abt. 1748, in DAR records and Footnote? Is this the son of John Fulk and Eve Bible? Or the brother of JOhn Fulk born abt. 1739? Could someone clear up this union for me? Thanks. s

Norman - Jett 1793 Culpeper, VA

Courtney Norman and A? JETT allegedly married in Culpeper in 1793.

From all the information I have gathered, I do not believe this Courtney NORMAN is related to Isaac Norman b. ca 1682 in VA .

It is unclear as to the exact spelling of the bride's name. Alcey, Alice or Alcinda JETT. I believe she is the sister of John Jett, and they were the children of James JETT. Courtney and A? had a total of six children born in in VA and TN before she died

They had a daughter, named after her mother, the spelling of which is unclear. A? NORMAN m in TN, William Jett, the s/o John, and they 5 children before she died.

Norman and Jett came out of nowhere and disappeared just as handily.

I believe my paternal ancestor, Benjamin Norman, was related to Courtney Norman and his wife. The birthdate on the death certificate and place are right -- if I am correct. DNA proves I am not a Isaac Norman descendant. My ancestor was not the son of Reuben Norman and his second wife. It is was disproved years ago.

Benjamin disappeared from all records for 26 years before reappearing in OH records where he died about 1844. After 10 years of research the only thing I learned is the DNA is not at match to Isaac.

I do not know where to look next. Suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks!

Dear Katherine,
I'm afraid I do not show, in any of my records, a son named Dennis T.of my great grandfather Abraham Lewis. He did have a son Thomas Henry but I don't believe he left Missouri. Abraham and Geraldine had nine children, 5 girls and 4 boys. My grandfather was William Ethelbert Lewis.I was unable to find the 1870 census since I'm no longer a member of ancestry.com. Did you get any other response ?
I would be interested as it could give me new information that I'm not aware of.
Good Luck in your search. it is fun.
Sincerely, Carlaine Willis

Hi. It has been a few years and I'm not sure if this is still a good link to reply to your post referring to Abraham Lewis and Geraldine La Fayette Covington. I have reason to believe Abraham Lewis was the father of Dennis T. Lewis ( My lineage) Dennis T. Lewis was born in Saline, Missouri in 1860.( Per his Death Certificate info. Unfortunately, no parents are listed on his DC) There is a 1870 Richmond, Ray, Missouri Federal Census Record for Abraham and Geraldine Lewis listing a son, Dennis Lewis, age 11 born 1859 Missouri. Do you have any knowledge of a Dennis Lewis, son of your Abraham and Geraldine Lewis? My Dennis T. Lewis married Lou Ella Coursey in 1885 Falls County, Texas. They had several children together. Dennis T. Lewis died in 1918 in Kosse, Limestone, Texas and is buried in Eutaw Cemetery, Limestone, Texas. Any information you may have is greatly appreciated! Thank You, Kathy Shelton Hoyt. E-Mail address is texkat223@yahoo.com or you may post a reply here. Thanks again ! Kathy

I have an unknown son(Richard?), s/o John Corbin and Sarah Morris who apparently died, but may have married Rebecca (Farley). The connection is that the wife, Rebecca Corbin with children lived next door to John and Sarah Corbin as found in the 1830 Ohio Index for Salt Creek Township, Harrison County, Ohio. Even odds on it being daughter in law, not sure about maiden name Farley.

I can't help with your particular Aylor/ Whispell people, but I feel sure that they must be related to the William and Walter Ellis Aylor, and Edna Lillian Whispell who are in the 1913 yearbook I have. What do you think?
Loralee

Thomas Hughes b.1777ish m. Nancy Monroe, Revolutionary War Service

I know there are 3 different Thomas Hughes from Culpeper, VA that have Revolutionary War service, but I don't have documentation to prove my Thomas Hughes. The family DAR papers won't work as proof anymore foe some reason. I have an Ancestry DNA file on record and am hoping that someone who has more information about the Thomas Hughes will be able to provide me with more information conclusively one way or another. After all, if I can prove it via the DNA match, then its pretty much a lock!

Thanks,

Will

Culpeper Alexanders; Elk Run, Rapidan River, Border of Orange County, VA

Establishing Alexander surnames in Orange County, then Culpeper County, Virginia, focusing on deeds that describe locations in the Fork of the Rappidan River, specifically Elk Run. Followed the Thomas Rucker line since they were neighbors of James Alexander, and followed the names of families that married into James Alexander's family, Thomas Rucker, John Tinsley, John Henderson, and William Crawford.

Most records were obtained from The Library of Virginia searchable database on early Deeds in the Northern Neck, Wills, & Religious Petitions. Researchers from all the families named have posted information online that provide invaluable records for these early Virginia residents.

6 Apr 1734 George Essomes, [Eastham], St. Mark's Parish, Spotsylvania County, 300 acres in Fork of the Rappidanne River corner to Thomas & John Rucker, Neals Mountain, Rucker's line. This 1754 Culpeper William is the first hint of Alexanders outside of Augusta County after the designation of Culpeper County in 1748. The Sharman family of Robert, his wife Lucy, and daughter Ann show up as a constant link in the court records of Darby Quinn, Benjamin Head, William Alexander and other nearby neighbors.

21 Dec 1754 Will: Darby Quinn, Brumfield Parish, Culpeper Co, VA
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Darby Quinn of Brumfield Parish in Culpeper County, planter, being very sick and weak in body but in perfect health of mind and memory, thanks be to almighty God for the same, but calling to mind the certainty of death and that all men must die and as touching all such worldly estate that it hath pleased God to bless me with, do make this my last will and testament revoking, disallowing and disannulling all other Wills and Testaments..........Item: I constitute, ordain and appoint my son Richard Quinn my sole Executor of this my Last Will and Testament.
IN TESTIMONY whereof I have this twenty first day of December one thousand seven hundred fifty four set my hand and seal. Rollins - Orphan, Cornelius Rucker - Orphan, Ephraim Rucker, James Rucker, Peter Rucker, Thomas Rucker - deceased, Will Rucker, Robert Shearman, Henry Sparks, Thomas Sparks, Will Sparks, Mark Stowers, Will Stowers, Edward Tinsly, Jr., Edward Tinsly, Isaac Tinsly, Nathan Underwood, Richard Vernon, Richard Waite, Jacob Ward. These names show up in various deeds in the Elk Run, Rappidan area that James Alexander & family settled into. William Alexander, first referred to in Dec 1754 is not on the above tax list, although William was in the neighborhood of James Alexander witnessing various events. Yet William was never referred to as 'of Culpeper.' Notice that these names are almost a first rate list of early Wilkes/Elbert Countians.

Culpeper County, Virginia Deeds, Vol. III Deed Book D (1762-1765), pp.542-545.
17 Sep 1764 Michael Rice of Culpeper County, carpenter, to James Alexander of same, planter. Mary was first privily examined.

After James & Elizabeth Alexander settle into their new home, 1760-1769, the remaining half of the original 500 acre parcel purchased of Robert Andrews by Henry Rice in Spotsylvania County is sold to John Tinsley and his wife Sarah Parks by the descendants of Henry Rice. The John Tinsley family becomes the Alexander family's close neighbors and Mary Tinsley, daughter of John Tinsley married George Alexander in 1778.

Culpeper county Will Books B & C: pg 19,

22 Apr 1777 Inventory of estate of Daniel Brown, appraisers, Jonathan Underwood, James Alexander, William Rucker.
Will Book B & C, 1770-1783, pg 19. Inv. & Appr. recorded 22 Apr 1777. James Alexander was one of the estate appraisers for Daniel Brown and apparently no one else! James simply did not involve himself in this level of civic responsibilities. It could mean that 'he kept himself to himself' or that he wasn't related close enough to anyone nearby to be invited to handle the more personal aspects of a family grieving their dearly departed.

1782 Land Tax
James Jett & Alexander Waugh, Commissioners of the Tax for the County of Culpeper 1782

The Land Tax returned by John Hume and Alexander Waugh, Jr.,
District Commissioners for the year 1782.

William Alexander, 125 acres

James Alexander, 125 acres

Abraham Ahart, 100 acres

William Crawford, 200 acres

Assuming that William Alexander above is the son of James Alexander begs the question of why George and his bride Mary Tinsley aren't given 1/2 the acreage of James Alexander's property instead of William Alexander.....is this an oldest son issue, or the son who married first?....or this is another William Alexander? Or if George is the older son, is he the assumed heir of his father's 125 acre holdings?

1783 Property Tax
By this 1783 Property Tax enumeration, there were no Alexanders listed in Culpeper County except for the family of James Alexander with his sons George and William. His sons-in-law Joseph Henderson, William Rucker and Oliver Crawford who had married James' daughters Mary and Elizabeth and Lucy are also listed. Males of 16 years also listed in each household. The following households are picked from the larger tax list and I have added family information;

ROBERT ALLCOCK, GENT., LIST
Head of household:
George Alexander m. Mary Tinsley in 1778, Culpeper Co., VA..
James Alexander m. to Elizabeth since 1748.
William Alexander m. Frances Rucker in 1782.
William Cafford, Olson (Oliver)Cafford. Oliver married Lucy Alexander in 1786.
Leroy Canady m. Sarah Wait. chosen by James Alexander for the settlement of his estate, recorded in Madison County.
Joseph Early, owned land on Elk Run, near the Alexander family; by 1805 when this property was sold by his heirs, it was in Madison County, VA; A George Alexander witnessed the deed. Joseph Early died in this year, 1783, the very year he was elected to represent his vicinity in the Virginia Legislature.
Michael Ehart m. to Katherine Lesch; was father of Catherine Ehart who m. George Rucker.
Abram Ehart, (a covering horse) son of Michael; also serves as a witness to James Alexander's will in 1803. Michael Ehart bequeathes his land next to James Alexander to his son Abram Ehart.
Joseph Henderson m. Mary Alexander, dau of James & Elizabeth Alexander.
William Rucker m. Elizabeth Alexander, dau of James & Elizabeth.
John Rucker m. Julianne, daughter of Joseph Early.
George Rucker m. to Catherine Ehart, dau of Michael Ehart.

15 Aug 1785
Will of Esther Rucker of Bromfield Parish, Culpeper Co.
Dated 12 June, 1779. Proven 15 Nov 1779.
Part of index to Culpeper County Wills and Administrations (1749 - 1800) p. 135. Inv. & Appr. rec. Aug. 15, 1785.
Will Book C, 1783-1791 p. 343-344. Will pro. 15 Nov. 1779.
Will of Ester Rucker,12 June, 1779, Legatee: sister, Frances Rucker. Executors: Brothers, William Rucker, Joseph Rucker. Witnesses: William Rucker, Elizabeth Rucker, Joseph Rucker.
Inventory and Appraisal of Estate of Esther Rucker, dec'd. Recorded 15 Aug 1785. Conducted by William Alexander, Edward Herndon, Joseph Henderson.
Esther Rucker originally made her Will out to her sister Frances Rucker, still single in 1779. By the final estate recordings, Frances has married William Alexander and it is he that helps conduct the inventory and appraisal of his deceased sister-in-law, Miss Esther Rucker.

22 Dec 1783; Orange County, Marriage date of John Page, Jr., and Mary Collins, Jr., daughter of Mary Collins who consents to marriage. John Page, son of John Page Sr., and Elizabeth Page. Surety William Alexander. John Page, Jr. & Mary Collins, both of St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., VA.
Regarding this record, not enough info to make a call on which William Alexander this is.....could be either the earlier William affiliated with the Quinns and Sharmans, or this is William, James Alexander's son, who has some connection to these Collins' or Pages. If this is James' son William Alexander, then this record is the first with his name associated with Orange County acquaintances.

Early Virginia Religious Petitions
November 2, 1785, Culpeper, Against assessment bill: Samwell Cary, William Alexander, Martin Nalle, Robt Stuart, John Strother, Wm Hill, Adam Snyder, John Broyle, Rupart Hill, Ambross Powell, Ephraim Rucker, Stephen Haynes, Charles Hume, Jacob Ward, Robt Alcock, Francis Kirtley, Jeremiah Kirtley, John Forrister, Thomas Sampson, Elijah Kirtley, Jasper Haynes Jr., Joseph Strother, Alpheus Beall, Isaac Dunaway, William Butter, John F. Portor, Andrew Glassill..........Petition from Culpepper referred to Committee on the Bill concerning Religion.
This record shows the actual signatures of James and his son George Alexander, with William Alexander signing the petition among the first few signers. The tax records indicate that there was no 'extra' William Alexander in Culpeper County in 1783 or 1787.

1787 Land Tax
List of the Land Tax within the District of Goodrich Lightfoot, Commissioner in the County of Culpeper for the year 1787. (George Alexander, son of James, is not listed below as a land owner, although he was the Head of Household in 1783. William is listed as a property owner who owed taxes, however, the entire 250 acres were sold as property of the Estate of his father, James Alexander. William was renting?)

James Alexander: 125 acres
William Alexander: 125 acres
Abraham Ahart: 100 acres
Michael Ahart: 311 acres

Rapidan Baptist Church Records: George Eve wrote in 1796 in the front of one of the church minute books... "the spirit of emigration took place at the Ragged Mountains, many of our members emigrated to Georgia and Kentucky. Some of our members excommunicated in the beginning of the year 1788..."

Culpeper County Alexanders are continued under Elbert County Message Boards.
I’m going to chime back in on these Virginia Cheeks. I am related to Elijah Cheek (b. 1798) who married Mary “Polly” Holtzman in Shenandoah County, VA in 1818.

Elijah has been a stubborn brick wall for me. I was interested when it was posted that his parents were Francis Cheek and Mary Ann Cordry. There were a whole bunch of Cheeks in what is now the Page/Shenandoah/Culpeper/Rappahannock County area and I have been unable to figure out relationships. June, would help me with the connection between Francis and Mary and Elijah?

What I know:
Elijah’s year of birth in census records, and gravestone, and biography is consistently 1798.

Elijah was married in 1818 in Shenandoah County, Ambrose Booton officiating.

As noted in a previous message, I can confirm the Rappahannock County marriages of Cheek/Houston in 1835; Cheek/Browning in 1842; and Cheek/Stokes in 1843 as all daughters of my Elijah and they were all married by Barnett Grimsley

Elijah and his family (including some married daughters) moved to Memphis,TN around 1848. They also lived just across the Mississippi River in Mound City, AR.
Elijah died in 1863 and is buried in Memphis.

What I think:
It is my Elijah who sold land to Austin and Demanda Cheek in Rappahannock County in 1847. See http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wa6dsb/Mar...
This doesn’t prove a family relationship, but does support it.

In a bio of Elijah’s son, Thomas H. Cheek, Thomas’ grandfather (Elijah’s father) was identified as George Cheek from North Carolina. I know these bios are often not reliable, but it’s something to throw out there. See http://books.google.com/books?id=hSxZAAAAMAAJ&q=%22elija...

I know this probably just makes things even more murky, but perhaps it will help sort these Cheeks out.

Debbi

Elijah Cheek born 1784 died August 21, 1806
Married: August 21, 1806, Culpeper Co, VA
Wife: Milly Horton born 1781 Culpeper Co, VA daughter of
Robert W. Horton and Jael Underwood[my 4th great grandparents].
Milly Horton was sister to my 3rd great grandmother Nancy Horton who married May 21, 1809 James Cheek. Their daughter Mary "Polly" married James W Spicer May 22, 1839.

NOTES:

Our earliest Horton ancestor in America was Robert Horton, born to Drayton and Ann Horton of Cow Lane, London, England, on November 27, 1751, Christened at St. Sepulchre on December 26, 1751. According to Court records round at the Sessions of Gaol Deliver for the City of London, held at the Sessions House in the Old Baily, Robert was tried and convicted of petty theft in September, 1769 and was sentenced to be transported for a period of seven years. Robert Horton came to America as an Emigrant in Bondage in 1769 aboard the Justitia. Robert enlisted in the 3rd Virginia Militia, serving under Captain John Thornton out of Culpeper County, Virginia in February 1776. Robert served in the Battles of Kings Bridge, York Island, White Plains, Brandywine and Germantown. Robert was with Washington at Valley Forge, where he was discharged in February 1778. I am proud to be a descendent of Robert Horton.

In November 1778, Robert married Jaley Underwood and they lived near the NE slope of the Red Oak Mountain in Culpeper County, VA. Robert and Jaley had two sons and five daughters. Two of the daughters, Nancy and Milly married two sons of neighbor Francis Cheek, James and Elijah Cheek. Another daughter, Mary (Polly) married Franklin Anderson. We are still researching daughters Sally and Chloe, but Sally was shown as the head of household in the 1830 VA Census and we think Chloe may have moved on to Ohio with some of her siblings. Son James and his family migrated to Robertson County TN. Some of his descendents went on to St. Genevieve County and Newton County, MO. These Hortons married into the families of Fry, Swan, Snow, Lacy, Pitt, Martin, Groves and McDole. Son Robert, from whom I descend, migrated to Licking County, OH, then on to Grant County, IN, where he died in 1853. Some of Roberts descendents remained in Ohio, while others migrated to Fulton County, IL, Cedar Couty, Missouri and Davis and Montgomery County, IA. Some of the names of the families these Hortons married into include Bennett, Jones, Moreland, Evans, Nelson, Cecile, McLouth and Bauman.

On the 1820 Culpeper Co Census Index it shows Jaley as head of household. Robert was not on the 1820 Census, he must have passed away.

4th great grandfather
About Robert Horton:

Fact 1: 1769, To America from London.
Hello. In your message you included information about Austin Cheek and Demanda Whalen. I know Austin is a direct descendant of George (of Front Royal) Cheek. My husband took the DNA test that proved this. Do you have any idea who connects George to Austin...who was Austin's father, etc... Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Elizabeth Cheeks
Pittsburgh, PA

Elizabeth, I think Peter Ransdel Cheeks's wife was named either Mary A Lowe or Margaret A Lowe.
I'm still trying to figure out who Austin "Oscar" Cheeks parents were... we know he's a descendent of George Cheeks of Rappahannock, based on dna, but it's possible he was actually George's grandson or great grandson, based on the birthdates... I would love to see what you have in your tree for them! :) Cousin Myra
Hi my name is June and I have some Cheek info to share. My 2nd great grandparents were James W. Spicer[born 8/1817] and Mary "Polly" Cheek[born abt. 1817]. They married in Rappahannock Co, VA on May 22, 1839. Before I go any further part of Rappahannock Co was formed from Culpeper Co in year 1833. They lived most of their life in Stevensburg,Culpeper Co. Mary "Polly" Cheek Spicer was daughter of James Cheek and Nancy Horton.
James Cheek married Nancy May 21, 1809, Chesterfield Co., VA
James Cheek and Nancy Horton had the following children:
William Coleman Cheek married Barbara ?
Catherine Cheek
Mary "Polly" Cheek [my 2nd great grandmother]
Lucy Ann Cheek who married January13,1848 to Gustavus Spicer

James Cheek was son of Francis Cheek and Mary Ann Cordry. I have two wife's for Francis Cheek 1st wife was Nancy Gaines married 1/1/1801 Culpeper Co.[ I often wonder if Francis Cheek Jr's wife was Nancy Gaines????]
2nd wife was Mary Ann Cordry. Their children were:
1. Lucy Mildred "Milly" Cheek married February 26, 1807 Culpeper Co to Jasper Daniels.
2. Nancy Cheek married John Buffington.
3. Elijah Cheek married August 21, 1806 Culpeper Co to Milly Horton. Minister Lewis Conner [Baptist]
4. Betsy Cheek died October 18, 1819
5. Polly Cheek
6. Francis Cheek, Jr.
7. James Cheek married Nancy Horton[my 3rd great grandfather]
8. George Cheek married January 31, 1793 Culpeper Co Elizabeth Williams.
9. Luke Cheek married March 01, 1823 Culpeper Co Sally Crouch
10. William Vincent Cheek born March 09, 1796

Notes: Francis Cheek Sr. born abt. 1766 Frederick Co, VA Died 1818 Culpeper Co. Son of Francis "George" Cheek and Leannah Unknown of Front Royal, Warren Co, VA

The participants in Group 3 are believed to be descendants of George Cheek, an early settler in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. George Cheek first appears in the records of Culpeper County, VA, in 1767, and he was one of the founders of the town of Front Royal, originally Frederick (now Warren) County, VA. George Cheek and some of his children migrated to Dearborn County, Indiana, in the 1790's. Other members of the Cheek family, believed to be related to George Cheek, remained in Virginia and are found in Frederick, Warren, Culpeper and Rappanhannock Counties during teh 19th century. The DNA results of two descendants, one from the Indiana branch of the family, the other from Virginia, are a perfect match. Their DNA haplogroup, E3b, is a Mediterranean haplogroup that is relatively rare in northern Europe and the British Isles.

Children of Francis "George" Cheek and Leannah Unknown were:
George Cheek
Nancy Cheek
Nicholas Cheek
James Cheek born May 14, 1760
Francis Cheek, Sr. born 1766 married Mary Ann Cordry

In my Culpeper Co marriage book it states Austin Cheek married Demanda Whalin 1/4/1832 Minister William F Broadus.

Notes for Francis Cheek 1766 - 1818
Francis served in the Revolution and probably had the same service history as a Hezekiah Roberts for he claimed to have known Roberts for 40 years. They both served under a Captain William Fields

Division of Land of Francis Cheek, Sr. Deceased
Will Book H, page 155-157.
Land survey by William Slaughter dated 14 April 1818. He was distinguished for his extraordinary energy, shrewdness and boldness in his business transactions. One of the most enterprising citizens of Memphis, he invested liberally in every work designed to promote the public good, never failing to give most generously to the Church. He established in 1851-52, a ferry from Memphis to Mound City, five miles above Memphis, in Arkansas, and was involved in interminable litigation with the original riparian proprietors. He built a plank road from Mound City to Marion, Arkansas, and at the same time was most zealous and successful in establishing a cotton mill (afterward destroyed by fire,) of 6,000 spindles in Memphis. He built and owned the old grist mills on Poplar street, and led a life of tireless activity. During the war he was strongly commended to President Lincoln as a proper person to serve as a provisional Governor of Arkansas. He died in 1863, in the 65th year of his age.

1820 United States Federal Census
about Elijah Cheek Name: Elijah Cheek
Home in 1820 (City, County, State): Luray, Shenandoah, Virginia
Enumeration Date: August 7, 1820
Free White Persons - Males - Under 10: 1
Free White Persons - Males - 16 thru 25: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 16 thru 25: 1
Slaves - Females - 14 thru 25: 1
Free White Persons - Under 16: 1
Total Free White Persons: 3
Total Slaves: 1
Total All Persons - White, Slaves, Colored, Other: 4

1830 United States Federal Census
about Elijas Check Name: Elijas Check
[Elija Cheek]
Home in 1830 (City, County, State): Culpeper, Virginia
Free White Persons - Males - Under 5: 1
Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 14: 1
Free White Persons - Males - 20 thru 29: 2
Free White Persons - Males - 30 thru 39: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 5 thru 9: 2
Free White Persons - Females - 10 thru 14: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 20 thru 29: 1
Slaves - Males - Under 10: 2
Slaves - Males - 10 thru 23: 2
Slaves - Males - 24 thru 35: 2
Slaves - Males - 36 thru 54: 3
Slaves - Females - 10 thru 23: 2
Free White Persons - Under 20: 5
Free White Persons - 20 thru 49: 4
Total Free White Persons: 9
Total Slaves: 11
Total - All Persons (Free White, Slaves, Free Colored): 20

1840 United States Federal Census
about Elijah Check Name: Elijah Check
[Elijah Cheek]
Home in 1840 (City, County, State): Rappahannock, Virginia
Free White Persons - Males - Under 5: 1
Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 14: 1
Free White Persons - Males - 30 thru 39: 1
Free White Persons - Males - 40 thru 49: 1
Free White Persons - Females - Under 5: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 5 thru 9: 2
Free White Persons - Females - 15 thru 19: 2
Free White Persons - Females - 30 thru 39: 1
Slaves - Males - Under 10: 13
Slaves - Males - 10 thru 23: 13
Slaves - Males - 24 thru 35: 2
Slaves - Males - 36 thru 54: 1
Slaves - Females - Under 10: 5
Slaves - Females - 10 thru 23: 5
Slaves - Females - 24 thru 35: 1
Slaves - Females - 36 thru 54: 1
Persons Employed in Agriculture: 21
Persons Employed in Manufacture and Trade: 3
Free White Persons - Under 20: 7
Free White Persons - 20 thru 49: 3
Total Free White Persons: 10
Total Slaves: 41
Total All Persons - Free White, Free Colored, Slaves: 51

On 1840 census my 2nd great grandparents James Spicer and wife Mary Cheek lived next door to Elijah Cheek uncle to Mary Cheek daughter of James Cheek and Nancy Horton.
=======================================================
Rappahannock Co Marriages for Cheek:
1.Elizabeth Cheek & Pleasant Houston marriage bond 2/25/1835[Minister Barnett Grimsley marriage return 3/3/1836
2. With this much interest, just as you said, I can't help but think that we can finally solve the mystery of Lee's parents.

I see that a quick Google search on Priscilla Harrington turns up this site:
http://edlers.org/notes/p245.htm

Is that who you contacted? It would be very interesting to find the source material for her birth date and the list of children.

- Julian
