Note of interest:
We were raised on Owens Ridge and during the summer months, we harvested many different kinds of herbs. After the herbs were dry, we traded them in at Jess Newberry's store for cracker jacks, jawbreakers, bubblegum, sugar daddy, and penny candy. Our Mom used her dried herbs for practical things we needed like bolts of cloth. She was a great seamstress. Jess Newberry store was located just past the PawPaw Old Regular Baptist Church, near the Buchanan County line. Jess and Fan Newberry lived just across the road from the store. My great grandfather Andrew "Andy" Owens and Rebecca (Ramey) Owens lived and are buried at the mouth of PawPaw Creek, close to Jess Newberry's store.
