Thomas Hardaway Mitchell is buried in Walton County, Mitchell Cememtery, HWY 11 2 miles north of Social Circle Ga on the right. He and his wife ,Mary are buried there next to my GGG Grandmother, Jedidah Perkins Mitchell. Thomas was born in 1793 Dinwiddie County, Va and died in 1853. He had acquire a large plantation in Walnut Grove, Ga and was one of the founding fathers of that city. His son is Capt Jett Thomas Mitchell, CO of 42nd Ga Infantry , CO H.
Thomas is tholdest son of John Henry Mitchell. He is brother to James H. Mitchell and Jesse Mitchell who was the Judge of Walton CO. 1856 to 1872. Jesse is buried with Thomas. I am a descendant of James H. Mitchell. There were 6 members of this family that fought during the Civil War. There are 6 cemeteries in Walton County that hold 165 graves of Mitchells. James H. was born in 1803, Jesse 1800. James H Mitchells son, William Thomas Mitchell was killed after the battle of Griswoldeville near Macon , Ga on Shermans March to the Sea. Nov 22, 1864 wounded, died Jan 10 1865 and was buried in Rose HIll Cemetery on Jan 11, 1865. He is nephew to Thomas Hardaway Mitchell. I would eexpect that there are at least 4 or 5 more siblings of Thomas Hardaway Mitchell. He is the oldest, and only one born of John Henry Mitchells children that was born in Va.

Little confused here.
The Carrol TN census shows James Oliver Dinwiddie born 1856 in TN shows no Marsha Mitchum. What I am finding is where James is TN born, nothing to do with VA.
As with Fanny, I am finding where she married a Dinwiddie also of TN,
Just trying to understand where VA comes into the picture. Are you just listing under Dinwiddie Co Va because of the surname? Please clarify.

my family lived on sappony street on pocahontas island in dinwiddie which is now part of petersburg. it was the largest settlement of free black people in the united states and the archaeological evidence in that place dates back 6.5 million years. the island was given to pocahontas and john rolfe's son by pocahontas' father chief powhatan. he told his grandson he could do whatever he wanted with it and his choice was to open it up for residence and business enterprise among free black people. it is a very rich history associated with black people being proud of a community of their own. in fact, petersburg/dinwiddie was the inspiration for free black communities all over the united states. even harlem and other northern cities took their cue from pocahontas island. it still stands today. there is a street there called sappony.

I'm looking for any information on the Colemans who lived on or around Colemans Lake in Dinwiddie. I found a record stating that the mill which is on the lake, was built in 1898 and was last used in 1952. After that the
lake " was developed in the early-to-midtwentieth century as a recreational business, with a dance hall, swimming and fishing access, a marina, and a store. It was operated by Buster Coleman." I also found a reference stating that Edward W Coleman Jr lived on the lake in 1961. I'd also love to find any historical information about the lake itself.

Richard Marr Scott

My 4th great grandfather is Richard Marr Scott (circ. 1825 - 1898) married to Lucy Heeps (1834 - 1912). Richard was born in Virginia, USA and emmigrated to Strathalbyn, South Australia where he married in Adelaide 1851, raised his family around Strathalbyn and died. It is believed that he is the son of General Winfield Scott (as stated in his death notice), however, there is no evidence of Richard being listed among Winfield's children in his biographies or other family research that I can find. There are a number of stories floating around about Richard being disowned by his father, and how he was often found to be sitting at Strathalbyn Railway Station in his later years longing to be back in Virginia.

I have recently discovered a common connection with the late trucking magnate Allan (Archibald) Scott whose family line also extends from Richard Marr Scott. In Allan's official biography the connection between Richard and Winfield Scott is strongly claimed, with Allan's family returning to Virginia to restore the General's grave.

I am looking for primary evidence of Richard Marr Scott being the son of General Winfield Scott, verification of his mother as Maria Dehart Mayo (or was there another unnamed woman in Winfield's life? His first wife Lucy Baker died in 1816, long before Richard's birth, which rules her out as his mother).

Any further clues or assistance with this connection would be very much appreciated. Thank you in anticipation :)
I have been working on my Wells 3rd gt grandmother for years with no luck. Hope it rings a bell with someone.

Virginia Ann Wells b. 1828 Va. died in Mystic Ct. 1883 wife of Henry Gilbert whom she married probably in Petersburg Va. The death record says "dau. of Dan" The 1880 census she claims her father was born in N.C. as well as her mother. Virginia and Henry have a son Charles born in Petersburg 1848 but are in Ct. by the 1850 census. In that same census and family there is an Elizabeth same age as Virginia also born in Va. possible twin sister. It was mentioned in family history Henry was involved in a Silk Mill down there perhaps in Hopewell. There is a Dan in the 1830 census of Dinwiddy,Two in 1820, one might be Dan P. and wife Mary. He had a second wife and not all the children are identified.

Thank you, Jeffrey Howe

Hi, I am trying to chase down James Speisland (45 or older) and Heiko Speisland (18-26) who show up on the 1820 Rutherford County, North Carolina census. I see James Spicely on the 1840 Dinwiddie census, and I wonder if there is a record of him in Virginia before 1820. Other family members of James and Heiko moved to Stewart County, TN and Trigg County, KY and spelled their names "Spiceland". The family is thought to have its origin in a "Spies" or "Spees" Hessian soldier from the Revolutionary war. I would like to prove or disprove that James Spiesland is related to James Spicely.

I have usually found the DAR records more useful than the SAR records. But DAR only lists John Atkinson's descendants that have been proven and a son John is not one of them. I was hoping that you needed Johnston Co. info as so much of it is available on-line. It sounds like you need Roger's will and while looking at the Dinwiddie, Virginia collection in the Family History Library Catalog it looks like not much is available before 1830. The loose wills they have record of said pieces were missing etc.

However, have you used their microfilm of the Bristol Parish Register 1720-1794 and Vestry Book 1720-1789 FHL US/CAN Film [30625] ? It states that Bristol Parish included Dinwiddie and Prince George counties. This might include birth and christening records. I have never found what I wanted in the VA parish registers I was looking at, but I thought if you were desparate you might give it a try. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Nancy Smith

I am researching my Family Tree and have run into a brick wall. John Atkinson, s/o Roger Atkinson and Ann Pleasents, born around 1726 in Dinwiddie County, married Mildred Dickerson and died around 1789 in Danville, Virginia. Their son, John Atkinson, born March 1759 or 1760 ends up in Johnston County, N.C. where my Family Tree Starts. I keep finding bits and pieces of info but nothing that ties them all together. The lastes being the U.S. Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications. Any help, info or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Richard Atkinson

Here's where we left off...
Nathan Cousins and Mattie Evans (the parents of Rosa and Eleanor Cousins) were married June 3, 1903, in Nottoway County, VA
Nathan was born around 1873, Nottoway County, son of Nathan Cousins and Rebecca _?___
Martha (Mattie) Evans was born 1876 in Nottoway County, the daughter of Simon Evans and Rosa _?____
https://www.familysearch.org/search/recordDetails/show?uri=h...

Here is some information on Nathan Cousins and his family...
1900 Census, Nottoway County, VA
Nathan M. Cousins, age 22, with parents Nathan Cousins (b. May 1835) and Rebecca Cousins (b. Jan 1836) , Lizzie Doswell, (b. Mar 1828) widow, born in Alabama, listed as the mother-in-law of the elder Nathan Cousins. (Hmmm....I doubt that Lizzie gave birth to Rebecca when Lizzie was 7 years old....something isn't quite right here!)
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

Here they are again on the 1880 census, Blendon, Nottoway County, VA
Nathan M. Cousins, age 9, with parents Nathan Cousins (45 - b 1835) and Rebecca Cousins (age 40) and Nathan's siblings, Elexander, Nancy, Patty and Virginia Cousins.
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

1870 Census, Haytokah, Nottoway County, VA
Nathan Cousins (age 40) and Rebecca Cousins, with their oldest children: Griffin (1857), Eleck (aka Elexander), b. 1859, Ann, b 1861, Harriet, b. 1863 and Ellen, b. 1869
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

And, regarding Mattie (Martha) Evans Cousins, here is her family on the 1880 Census, Blendon, Nottoway County, VA
Simon Evans, age 45, wife Rose Evans, age 40, Children Adolphus, 15, Mary A., age 9, Martha A, age 5, James E., age 1, and unnamed infant male, 25 days old.
http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

1870 Census, Blendon, Nottoway County, VA
Simon Evans, age 55 ?? (should be 35) wife Rose, age 30; children Archer (11), Adolphus.
Also at same address is Branch Evans, age 30 (possibly a brother of Simon?), Ann Evans, age 20, and Finnela Evans, age 2.

The next most likely question is this: were your Cousins and Evans ancestors born as slaves or free? I'm not sure. There are two free black Simon Evans on the 1860 census - one in Prince George County and one in Prince Edward County, but neither seems to be the right age.
As for Cousins, there is a free black man named Nathan Cousins living in Nottoway County on the 1850 census, age 16 (b 1834) which makes him about the right age to match the Nathan Cousins, father of Nathan, on the 1880 Nottoway County Census. He is working on the farm of Garland Wingow (Wingo) in Nottoway County. The problem is, I can't find this Nathan Cousins on the 1860 census. He could possibly have fled north to avoid the pending civil war.
Garland Wingo of Nottoway County was born 1776 and died 2 Jan 1856 in Nottoway County, VA. It might be interesting to try to obtain a copy of his Will and Estate records, to see if there is any mention of his slaves or any mention of Nathan Cousins. Or to review court records in Nottoway county to see if there is a record of Garland Wingo having freed any slaves prior to 1850.

Something else interesting. There are two Cousins families in Nottoway County on the 1840 census headed by free black men - Charles Cousins and John Cousins. Both have sons about the right age to be Nathan, but I really don't know.

Something else really interesting. There was a series of newspaper advertisements in the Richmond papers between 1830 and 1831 concerning a man who was committed to the Jail of Nottoway County "on the 14th day of November, 1830, as a runaway, a negro man, who calls himself Peyton Cousins, and who also says that he was born free and raised in the County of Charlotte. He is about thirty years old....." The article goes on to request that anyone knowing Peyton Cousins and able to provide evidence that he is free, should contact the writer of the article. I have no idea whether this Peyton Cousins is or is not your patriarchal ancestor. It would take much more research to prove or disprove.

Some other information available on Familysearch.org about the children of Simon and Rosa Evans:

Virginia Births and Christenings, 1853-1917
Jas. Edwr. Evans, born 11 Aug 1878, Nottoway County, VA
Parents: Simon Evans, Rosa Evans
Charles Evans, born 4 May 1880, Nottoway County, VA
Parents: Simon Evans, Rosa Evans

Virginia Deaths and Burials, 1853-1912
Adolphus Evans, b. 1864, Nottoway, VA, died 10 Nov 1880, Nottoway, VA
Parents: Simon Evans, Rose Evans

Mary Jane Evans, b. 1870, Nottoway, VA; died 30 Apr 1889, Nottoway, VA
Parents: Simon Evans, Rosa Evans

Charles Evans, b. 1874, Nottoway, VA; died 13 Aug 1881, Nottoway, VA
Parents: Simon Evans, Rosa Evans
