The marriage bond is in what is called "Drawer X" in the Fairfax County Circuit Court archives. I learned about the bond in the online deed book index, available as one of the valuable circuit court finding aids found online here: http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/courts/circuit/historical-recor...

You would need to contact the circuit court archives for a copy of the marriage bond.

Early road orders from the court order books are online. There are some Allen's mentioned, including Andrew Allen and John Allen. http://www.virginiadot.org/vtrc/main/online_reports/pdf/03-r...

In the book Fairfax County, Virginia in 1760 by Beth Mitchell, she identified Andrew Allen as a tenant of Henry Fitzhugh. This is interesting since Andrew Allen and John R. Allen were listed in the road orders (mentioned above) as being tithables responsible for road maintenance along with Henry Fitzhugh's quarter.

For research this early, personal property taxes, land taxes, deeds, and wills are your best bet. You can also try chancery records, which are online. They are a bit later, but sometimes you can still get good early info when cases dragged on. http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/

If a case went to Superior or District Court, these files for Fairfax County are archived in Fredericksburg, VA. They have a great online index available here: http://historiccourtrecords.org/courtrecordsearch.asp

Good luck.
Debbie
There was a John Allen who entered into a marriage bond with Sarah Jacobs in 1788 and a John Allen who sold land to John Carlyle in 1746. No Thomas Allen in the deed books prior to 1792. No Allens in the Fairfax County will books before 1792.

I found your contact information on the Ancestary.com page and wanted to send you this information. I am also looking for information and pictures on the Robert E. Lee Elementary School for our time capsule at the new Kelley Cares Miracle Field at the Lee Center (the old RELES – now the Recreation Department’s main office).

I would love to hear from you.

The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities and the Miracle League of Alexandria will installing a Time Capsule at the new Kelley Cares Miracle Field at the Lee Center. The Miracle Field was dedicated in November 2012 through a public/private partnership. The facility has a rubberized baseball diamond designed surface that will be primarily used for special needs youth and adults to have outdoor recreation in a safe and pleasant environment. However, the design also allows multiple other uses of the field as well – youth t-ball, senior sports, and adult sports, etc.

Since the entire Alexandria community helped build the field, the City and the Miracle League is interested in suggestions residents as to what should be included in the Time Capsule. Suggestions should relate to the history of the area where the field is located - 1108 Jefferson Street, Alexandria, VA 22314, past users of the field or information on the surrounding neighborhoods. This is the area of the City that the Robert E. Lee Elementary School was located. The Time Capsule will be dedicated at the season opener of the Miracle Baseball League on Saturday, April 27 and will not be scheduled to be reopened for 25 years after the dedication.

Suggestions will be received between March 15th and April 16. An evaluation panel will determine the final items for inclusion in the Time Capsule.

I have included three pictures of the new Miracle League Field from the November dedication.

Suggestions may be submitted to:

City of Alexandria
Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (ADRPCA)
c/o Mac Slover
mac.slover@alexandriava.gov
1108 Jefferson Street
Alexandria, VA 22314

If you have any questions, direct them to Mac Slover (ADRPCA) at 703.746.5407.

I don't know where Rev. William Brown Otis or his wife Anna (Ann) E. Otis are buried. However, I do have the following related info to offer:

1. William Otis, son of William B. Otis, is buried at Christ Churchyard in Shrewsbury, NJ. Per Find A Grave. William B. Otis had been the rector there. Per a couple of journals available on Google Books by searching for Rev. William G. Otis. William Otis, the son, was living in Clifton in 1870. Per Federal Census

2. Harrison G. Otis, son of William B. Otis, and his wife Adele Varra Otis are both buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Per Find A Grave.

3. Harrison G. Otis, brother of William B. Otis, died in 1885 in Clifton and was interred at "Greenwood." Per his obituary. There is a Harrison G. Otis buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Kings County, NY. Per Find A Grave. Also, see http://www.green-wood.com/burial_results/index.php?action=S

4. William Otis and Clarissa Gale Otis, parents of William B. Otis, were buried at Hillside Cemetery, Middletown, Orange County, NY. Siblings buried here too. Per Find A Grave.

5. I couldn't find any land in the Clifton area that was sold that had any mention of a cemetery in the deed.

Debbie

On the contrary, you've been a great help!

Every little bit of information may lead me to him. There is an outside possibility that he may have been brought back to New Jersey for burial. His son is buried there in the Churchyard cemetery where he once was the pastor.

His New Jersey obit also is very sparse, only a few sentences.

If his wife died ~1889 and he remained in Virginia afterwords then there is a good possibility that they are both buried there somewhere. We shall see.

Thank you for searching on my behalf.

Bob

I don't know where he is buried, but I can tell you that there was no obituary in the Fairfax Herald and that there was only a one-line death announcement, with no burial information, in the Washington Post. "OTIS--At Clifton, Va., Saturday, December 10, 1898, Rev. William B. Otis, in the eighty-second year of his age. (New Jersey papers please copy.)" The Clifton Town Cemetery wasn't chartered until 1900, although there are some earlier burials there. There are no OTIS family members buried there. Death registers for Fairfax County run from 1853-1896, and then 1912-present, so there is no death record. There was no probate opened for William Otis, although there was an 1886 will (probated 1889) will for his wife, Anne. No mention was made of a preferred burial location, but she did mention her two real estate lots in Washington, DC. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I could not find an obit in the Washington Post. I do see that his (1957) will was probated in Fairfax County. It lists his wife as Lucretia Marie Schick and his daughters as Marcella Josephine Stevenson and Dorothy Louise Strawbridge. Dorothy lived in Springfield, VA, and Marcella lived in Flint, Michigan. Funeral expenses were paid to Charles O. Dimond; I found a Dimond Funeral Home in South Fork, PA, not far from Johnstown, PA where he is buried: http://www.dimondfuneralhome.com/ . Perhaps they would know if an obituary was placed in a Pennsylvania newspaper. If you will email the Fairfax County Public Library's Virginia Room at va_room@fairfaxcounty.gov , I will send you possible contact information for a woman who may be Dorothy's daughter.

Ok, Thanks! His grandparents, Leonard and Ruth, were very special people to my Momma. I have started studying their genealogy, and have been trying to connect with their descendants for a while now! Thank you for all of your help!

Patterson & Reese is the name of the law firm where Gary Reese is a partner. I am not related to the Reese family.

Yes, I have contacted Everly Funeral Home, but they haven't contacted me back yet. I couldn't find a valid email address for Gary Reese, so I wrote a letter to his mailing address, and it was just mailed today. I notice your business is "Patterson & Reese". Is anyone related to Leonard, Jr.? If so, let me know. I would love to get in contact with them!
