Hi sla276.

Though Taylor is a fairly common name, I do find a few of them shown.

George Taylor, owns 200 acres, 2 slaves.
Henry Taylor, tenant.
James Taylor, owns 100 acres.
William Taylor, tenant.

I also show that:

George Taylor leases 200 acres from William Clifton.
Henry Taylor is also a tenant of Clifton.
James Taylor leases 100 acres from George Mason.
William Taylor is listed as a tenant on John Dalton's land.

Nothing else on the other names you listed though. Hope that helps!

Hi wailanjian :). You're request wasn't too greedy, I just hadn't logged in for a while so I didn't notice it! Unfortunately, I don't find anything for the names you listed but keep in mind, this book only covers leaseholders and land and slave owners, i.e. the fairly wealthy, so most of the population of this area isn't mentioned in the book.

Sorry and let me know if you'd like me to look up anyone else :).

Re: Thomas WREN d. 1768

(Colonel) Thomas Wren (I) (sometimes called Junior) was born in 1703, and died at his home near Falls Church in 1767. His wife, Jean, died after 1767. One of the first references to Colonel Thomas is his mention in Robert “King” Carter will as overseer of Wolf House Quarter, one of Carter’s plantations. Next we find Col. Thomas Wren A Resident of North Farnham Parish of Richmond County,1737 thru 1739, with son John born Oct 1737, and daughter Betty born 4 Nov 1739, in the parish. Wife wasJane. The next record of Col. Thomas Wren in Fairfax (then Prince William) is a record dated June 22, 1741. On that day Thomas Wren, Edward Emms, and William Harle appraised the estate of William Williams, deceased. The appraisal was returned to the Prince William Court on July 27, 1741.
On October 25, 1742, the Prince William Court ordered an Inventory made of the estate of Rodham Neale. This was returned to the Court on March 28, 1743, by Thomas Wren, Owin Williams, and Walter English. On February 19, 1749, Thomas Wren was listed as a Vestryman of Truro Parish.
The Fairfax Court orders contain some reference to Colonel Wren during the
1750's. On February 20, 1754, Wren was awarded 2 pounds, 11 shillings, 5 pence, and 109 pounds of tobacco in a suit against Pierce Noland. A suit was brought against Wren by John Pagan on February 20, 1754. Wren was to give special bail before he was allowed to appear in the suit, "Whereupon Robert Boggess came into Court & undertook for the said Thomas to pay the condemnation of the Court if he should be cast in this suit or deliver up his body in Execution." On December 10, 1759, Thomas Wren made an interesting deposition before Edward Blackburn and Lee Massey in a lawsuit, "George West Against Orsin alias William Holyfield & Valentine Holyfield." This suit, recorded in Loudoun County, is the only proof for the birth year of Thomas Wren. His deposition ("Thomas Wren of Fairfax, aged 56 years"), was recorded on Thursday, March 12, 1761, but was made on December 10, 1759, at the institution of the suit. The suit is of special interest. Orsin (an assumed name of William) Holyfield (or Holi¬field), and Ralph Holyfield conveyed to Hugh West some land in Loudoun County which had been the property of their parents, Valentine and Elizabeth Holyfield. However, question had been raised over their right to convey the property, since, as Wren, and others testified, they were "Bastard children," born before their parents were married by license. Valentine and Elizabeth (--) Holyfield were indentured servants brought into this country by Thomas Worthington of Maryland. They lived together without ceremony, since indentured servants were not permitted to wed. Two children were born during this time, Ralph and William (Orsin). After comple¬tion of the indenture, the family moved across the Potomac to what is now Fairfax County, and were married here by the minister of Truro Parish. They were hired as servants by Edward Emms, a neighbor to Thomas Wren, and thus came into contact with settlers in what is now the Falls Church neighborhood. Gerard Trammell (age 57 years "and upwards" on December 10, 1759), and Samuel Jenkins, age 47 years, on the same date, both gave other details. Samuel Jenkins testified that Ralph Holy- field lived with him as a hired hand at one time. It was during this time that he was Godfather at the baptism of William ("now Orsin") Holyfield. After the marriage, Valentine and Elizabeth had three more children: Daniel, Valentine, and Elizabeth. Daniel, the eldest child (after the marriage) was considered by Thomas Wren to be legal heir to the father. It was further testified that Valentine Holyfield, Sr., died at the house of a sister of Jacob Lasswell at the age of 56. Since he was called a close friend of Lasswell, it may be that Elizabeth Holyfield was a Lasswell. At any rate, this suit covers several pages and gives us a glimpse of the conditions and cus¬toms of the day.
On March 28, 1763, Thomas Wren (with his fellow Vestrymen, including George Washington) voted to build the present Falls Church, according to Colonel James Wren's plan. On November 30, 1765, Wren, now a Vestryman of the new Fairfax Parish, which was formed from the older Truro Parish, was appointed Reader at the Falls Church, with an annual salary of 250 pounds of tobacco. On October 16, 1766, Thomas Wren was appointed Clerk of the Falls Church with an annual salary of 1,000 pounds of tobacco.
Col Thomas Wren died between the Aug and October1767, Vestry meeting, because the October meeting has a motion to replace Thomas Wren because he has died.
On September 8, 1767, Colonel Wren made his Will, probated May 16, 1768.119 In it he mentioned his wife, Jean, and the following children:, Nicho¬las Wren, William Wren, John Wren, Travis ("Traverse") Wren, Isaac Wren, Mary Wren, Ann Wren, and Winney Athill (or Etwell). Witnesses were: Colonel James Wren, James Donaldson and Colonel Robert Lindsay.
Need Help? Where did Thomas get his rank of Colonel? When did wife Jean or Jane die? Does anyone have birth, marriage or death dates of his children. Was the so called Thomas WrenII or Jr. the son of John Wren Thomas's brother? He is not mention in Col. Thomas will. Why was son Nicholas left out in distribution of will assests?

Washington Post, The (DC) - February 27, 1987, Page B8.
STANLEY G. HARGEY
73, a retired employe of the Internal Revenue Service who had lived in the Washington area since 1946, died Feb. 24 at the Hermitage Health Care Center in Alexandria. He had undergone surgery for a brain tumor.

Mr. Hargey, who lived in Falls Church, was a native of Pottsville, Pa., and a Navy veteran of World War II. After moving here, he went to work for the General Accounting Office, where he was an auditor, and later transferred to the IRS. He retired in 1974 as a staff manager in its inspection service.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Marguerite Naher Hargey of Falls Church.

----------

There was no obituary for Marguerite Hargey (with that spelling) in the Washington Post after 1987.
No problem CoSchumaker!

Here's what I find listed:

{ LAND OWNERSHIP }
Ellzey, William -- 586 acres
Ellzey, Lewis -- 1678 acres, 18 slaves

Later it says that Lewis Ellzey owns 2 seperate pieces of land and that one was a "Northern Neck Grant" and the other was purchased. It also says that William Ellzey owns 2 pieces of land and his was also from a Northern Neck Grant and purchased. William owned no slaves.

In the table "Fairfax County Landowners with Tenants in 1760", William is shown as having a tenant named Robert Lindsay and Lewis has a tenant named Thomas Williams. These tenants would have been people leasing land from the owner.
Robert Lindsay is shown as leasing 300 acres and Thomas Williams is shown as being a tenant -- the latter records are from the Account Books of John Glassford and Co., Manuscript Division (contained at the Library of Congress).

A William Turner is listed in the table of "Fairfax Co Tithables Not Possible to Place on a Map".

That's all I find -- hope that helps!

Hey Cyndi :). I request so many lookups in big ol' Cook County (Chicago) it actually excites me to be able to do lookups so let's see what I can find...

Hereford, George -- 125 acres, 1 slave
Hereford, John -- no acres listed (but this table denotes land ownership), 1 slave

Another table indicates that both George and John inherited their land.

They are both also noted again in a slaveholder table.

That's all I see listed. Hope that helps!

Hi all :). I recently came across the book "Fairfax County Virginia in 1760 : An Interpretive Historical Map" and am willing to do lookups for anyone with family in the county around 1760. Included in the book are lists of landowners, leaseholders, and slaveholders. There is also a list of landowners in the towns of Alexandria and Colchester.

There is also a Samuel listed as a leaseholder on 200 acres. Does anyone know what the street is called now, or can you point me to a 1960's era online map where I could find it? I've tried mapquest and GNIS and fairfaxcounty.gov. Thanks, Diane

I really do not know much more about the Gray family as slaves than what was posted. I have seen a Forrester Gray who was freed also by George Washington though. He was 57 in 1831. Age 60 in 1834.

Thanks. That could be something. I did think that Louisa's mom may have been a dower slave at Mt. Vernon. In the Southern Claim it says that George Washington set her father free then her father bought her mom. Since GW's will set only his slaves free not Martha's slaves I think Louisa's mom was left behind when her father was freed.
