I have been researching an ancestor named Titus Brooks from Rappahannock COunty marriage records and ran across a Titus Col. in Culpeper 1840 census as a free colored person. I thought the Col stood for , until I realized the col stood for colored as indicated in the census count. He took the name Brook or Brooks at some point. He may have always been free or was freed at some point. I am just beginning to check the tax lists, personal property lists and Free Negro registers for Rappahannoc and Culpeper. He was married to a Lucy Lolla. I found them as parents of a married couple not their own marriage record. Has anyone ran across anyone remotely related? THanks alot.
