Grant History

Those interested in the early Grants and history of the Northern Neck will find new information in my book, "A Northern Neck Grant Family," Amazon CreateSpace, Seattle, Washington, 289 pages, ISBN 1449540791.

The Grants of the Northern Neck of Virginia are more than a simple lineage. Their participation in outward bound migrations that shaped America and three wars—Revolutionary, 1812, and Civil—requires historical understanding. As a science, history changed in the 1950s from a focus to please the reader to one of critical thinking and criticisms of institutions, policies and economic divide previously held sacrosanct. This book follows a similar path and offers a fresh perspective on Grant family history and their social and natural environment.

The book further corrects information in the three previous works: (1) Grant, Grace, and Hazel Alice Grant Samson. 1974 ©, “William Grant Genealogy,” published privately, Omaha, Nebraska, and West Lafayette, Indiana, 184 pages; (2) Russell, Thomas Triplett, 1978, “The Grant Families of the Northern Neck of Virginia,” published privately, Miami, Florida, 3 charts, 22 pages; and (3) Hirsch, Dianne C., 1994, “The Descendants of Elizabeth and William Grant,” published privately, Logan, Utah, 301 pages.

Thank you, Fred B. Samson, PhD, member, National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, through John Grant of Fauquier County, Culpeper Minute Men, and Daniel Morgan’s 11th Virginia Regiment.
I also looked for an electronic copy of the Alcock book but was unsuccessful. The Alcock book was, however, very useful in preparing “A Northern Neck Grant Family,” 2009, Amazon Createspace, Seattle, Washington, 289 pages. ISBN 1449540791; and to correct a misinterpretation for Daniel Grant in Hirsch, 1994, “The Descendants of Elizabeth and William Grant,” published privately, Logan, Utah, 301 pages. I was able to obtain both the index and pages of interest in the Alcock book very quickly through interlibrary loan. FredB. Samson.

Hi! I saw your post and the several replies. I am a great-great granddaughter of George Embrey Jr. and Polly/Mary Fox. It appears that Elizabeth died in 1815 and George re-married to Polly on 12/23/1816. They had four children: Julia Amanda, Thomas M., Mary E. and William B. Wm. and Virginia are my great-grandparents. I believe Virginia's maiden name was Hewitt, but there is some question and I am trying to confirm. I am wondering if there is another child with Elizabeth, but I need to visit the courthouse and research. Love to hear from anyone. Thanks.

The Old House is still standing. I am the current owner. It was gutted and rebuilt, but the foundation remained as well as the framing. Mr. Spencer, who lives on Bear Wallow and married a Fletcher, told me of the stories of the 2 confederate soldiers and the baby being buried. After the house was renovating, the builder took some of the Fletchers for a tour of the 'new' house. If you have any more info - let me know! Interesting stories. The older trees next to the house were removed during construction and afterwards (disease), but no signs of any old burial sites.

Hi All
I am looking for a man named Hinson George in Fauquier in
the late 1700s and early 1800s, (his son was born in 1828).

He is listed on my great grandfather's Lewis Brown's (Sr.) Rappahannock county marriage record as his father. His mother was listed as Sallie. I was told by a reliable source in Fauquier that the way the marriage record is written he may have been a product of a slavemaster and slave relationship. My great grandfather is listed as a mulatto in census records.

I know there were several George families in Fauquier, but I have not found a Hinson George yet. Any help will be appreciated.

Birth and death registration was not required in Virginia until 1853. Before that time you have to rely on family bibles, baptismal records, tombstones, etc.

The 1810 Fauquier Co. Census shows:
Anderson, Joseph p. 241 20110-1210101
Anderson, Vincent p. 245 00000-0010000

The 1820 Fauquier Co. Census show:
Anderson, Elijah 000210-02000-0000-0000-0000-0000-0000-0

No Robert Anderson the correct age appears on the 1850, 60 or 70 Fauquier Co.

A Mariah Brown of Fauquier is the immediate ancestress of my small Nickens line, being my grandmother's grandmother. Tradition is that the Browns were from an Indian community in Loudoun. There is a Loudoun history book, perhaps from the 1800's, which makes mention of this community, but I can not recall the other surnames. I seem to have taken away the impression that this community was distinct from the Newman clan of Point of Rocks, which were Piscataway.
At the turn of the 20th century Maria Brown and Susie Brown (Nickens) attended Hampton Institute, then taught at the Nanticoke Indian School at Indian River, Delaware.
I would appreciate the info that you mention about my ancestors in Culpeper County starting 1789.
Thank You. James Nickens

I have been researching an ancestor named Titus Brooks from Rappahannock COunty marriage records and ran across a Titus Col. in Culpeper 1840 census as a free colored person. I thought the Col stood for , until I realized the col stood for colored as indicated in the census count. He took the name Brook or Brooks at some point. He may have always been free or was freed at some point. I am just beginning to check the tax lists, personal property lists and Free Negro registers for Rappahannoc and Culpeper. He was married to a Lucy Lolla. I found them as parents of a married couple not their own marriage record. Has anyone ran across anyone remotely related? THanks alot.

Hi Gary,

Good to hear from you! Your message was posted so long ago that I figured it was a lost cause! (no pun intended...)

"Preserves"...haha that makes me smile, I realized you were serious when you knew this little fact about our boy Jimmie. He is the most endearing figure..... I'm assuming you've read his diary? Please let me know if you have not found this, and I'll send you a copy. I've also got copies of some of his field reports. (His birthday is also coming up soon......I usually go to his grave on Nov. 18th.)

His ancestors (by his sister, Margaretta) came and stayed at Spring Farm with me this past June - they were absolutely lovely and it was wonderful to make that connection. They are equally devoted Capt. Boswell fans and I learned a great deal about the family from them.

I recently created a panel for Jimmie at the Chancellorsville Battlefield Museum. If you are so inclined, you might visit and see his face on the wall.
Can you send me your personal email address? I would love to send you pictures of his descendants, and some other various tidbits.

Also, do you know Donald Pfanz? He's the head historian for the Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Wilderness Battlefields. I've recently given him a file with a great deal of the Jimmie information that I have. His headquarters are at Chatham House in Fredericksburg. If you look him up and give him a ring, I'm sure he'd be happy to discuss Jimmie with you - he's a really nice guy.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Audra
audrabielke@mac.com
612-508-0244

Tamara,

Thanks for catching that error on John Wright. You are, of course, correct. John Wright, the son of William Wright, should have been listed as 1815 (year of death) John Wright of Prince William County, Virginia, (place of death). I must have had Fauquier County on the mind.

The correctly stated line of descent is:
1. Probably 1700 Richard Wright of Stafford County,
2. 1765 Richard Wright of Prince William County,
3. William Wright,
4. 1815 John Wright of Prince William County.

The second Wright line that was also the subject of the original posting is:
1. Possibly John Wright (Westmoreland County Overseer),
2. Charles Wright,
3. 1760 Joseph of Fauquier County, and
4. John Wright who possibly married Sarah O. _____.

And John Lewright, sometimes listed as John Lee Wright, was the son of John Lewright and was unrelated to either of the above Wright lines.

Hope this correction prevents confusion for other researchers. I would be happy to exchange information on these Wright lines with other interested researchers.

Bob Grant
15 Campo Bello Court
Menlo Park, CA 94025
RNGrant@grantandgordon.com

James Bailey married to Hannah Thornsberry. James is said to be father of John Bailey who was married to Elizabeth Barnes on Jan,2,1793(daughter of Daniel and Mary Barnes). They were married at Marshall Va. then known as Salem at a Baptist church still there by the Rev.Monroe.They moved to Taylor co.West Virginia after their marriage.Their sons and grandsons had a strong connection to Faquier Co.and Culpepper Co even after the move.Relatives?Shackelfords are in the mix too.I have not found a marriage or parents names of James or Hannah. in Va.Could she have been a widow and married James with her widow's name or did they have another marriage before or after there deaths.I see many connections but no direct. John and Elizabeth named son Thornsberry and their sons likewise named sons Thornsberry.I have sorted the Taylor Co.Wva Thornsberry's out but know nothing of the Thornsberry family from Va.This from " Miscellaneous Bailey Families NOT Related to Carr Bailey".Because of no proof of the bloodline To Carr Bailey I assume.I have list for many Bailey's that moved there and almost all for Thornsberry Bailey married to Katie Glendining.I plan to do more researching in the future but would appreciate any information if anyone comes across it.Thanks

I'm looking for a descendant from the Wheatley Family of Fauquier and Culpeper Counties that would be willing to participate in the Wheatley DNA Project. This would have to be a male descendant. A test kit would be ordered and sent to the participant. The test is a simple swipe inside the mouth with a swab. George Wheatley died about 1752 in Prince William County. His sons were George, Jr.; John; James that left a will 1795 in Fauquier County; William that possibly went to Loudoun County; and Joseph.

If you are a male with the surname Wheatley and you can prove your descent from this family, please contact me.

Linda Stockdale
mike@compu.net

Thank you for your kind consideration. I am trying to get
further back on my family tree than Francis E. Bishop
He is listed in the 1860 census in Illinois,as age 49 which places his birth as 1811 in Ohio. the 1870 census of Decatur co. Ohio lists his age as 54 which places his birth as 1816 in Ohio. The 1880 census of Columbia Iowa, reflects his age as 64, which places his birth as 1816 in Ohio. The 1880 census also states his parents nativity as
Virginia. As I hinted I am now 80 and time to complete this project is drawing short. Thanks again

Noted that you have a Judith Blackwell mentioned in an earlier post.. I also have a Judith Blackwell, b ca 1751, in Northumberland Co, VA, who married Rev John Cordell. They moved to St Louis Co, MO, in about 1790.

Judith's father was Capt. Samuel Blackwell (there were at least two or three of them!), and her mother was Elizabeth Steptoe.

I am assuming a different Judith, than yours, or an earlier marriage. She was apparently married to a Burnettt Price (sp?)--they had two children-- prior to his demise, and her subsequent marriage to John Cordell, with whom she had seven children.

Nicholas

It is likely that Joseph Shipps, Sr was NOT a descendant of Josiah Shipps, but of a German immigrant to Pennsylvania. Joseph Sr's father was John Shipps (not Shipp) who immigrated to Pennsylvania from Germany. Joseph, Jr. is likely the one who married Dorothy Hill, while Joseph, Sr is the likely one who married Lettie Eicheson (not Atcheson). Don't believe everything in Ralph D. Shipps' book. There are MANY errors. Many assumptions were made rather than from actual documentation.

I understand there is a book, "Fauquier Families 1759-1799 Comprehensive Indexed abstracts of Tax and Tithable Lists, Marriage Bonds, Minute, Deed, and Will Books and Others," by John P. Alcock. I know it is available for purchase, but does anyone have access to an index so I can find out if my names are in the book BEFORE purchase?

I am interested in any variation of the name Alsbury
Aylesbury, Allsberry, Ailsbury, Auberry, etc.

Thanks, jen

James Abel Ashby was a prisoner aboard a british prison ship for over 3 years (this from his daughter and quoted in a book). I don't know if the ship was the infamous HMS Jersey stationed in Wallabout Bay in New York or some other prison ship. Ashby was a part of Colonel George Mathew's 9th Virginia Regiment (a part of General Greene's Divison) that was captured at the Battle of Germantown on 4 Oct. 1777. James Ashby did marry and had at least one son Abel and one daughter Mary. My line descends from Mary. A friend that I correspond with is descended from the son Abel. Are you descended from this line?

One interesting aside is that James Abel Ashby's brother David was an aide to General Washington.

I hope this helps. If you want to correspond more direcly let me know and I can send you my home e-mail address.

Regards, Sharon

My e-mail is jrscmcd@gmail.com. Look forward to hearing from you. I also have Bailey's in my family tree. They were from the London Groove Meeting House. We might have a connection there. Do note that David Ashby, the aide-de-camp was James Abel's brother and David did not leave any descendents that we know of.

Sharon

Thank you for your reply, My John keith was born 1799 in Virginia. He was in Fauquier Co. Abt. 1820/30 because he was made the guardian of Mary Ann Brown and married her in 1830. I have lots of things on the Brown's but absolutely nothing on John. In the 1850 census he and his family are in Frederick Co. and then sometime around 1850 they moved to Iowa. Abt. 1860 he came back to Culpeper Co. and Fauquier Co. to settle his wife's Mary Ann's gift from her Grandfather Aaron Fletcher and her mother Polly Fletcher Brown. She sold her interests in her slaves.
They then went back to Iowa.
What I want to know is where John Keith came from and I am sure it is not the Keith Family in Fauquier Co.
Is quite a mystery and frustration!
Thanks for your reply
Lynn

I'm looking for information on a Mariah Miller Brown b. 1824 who married a Peter Brown (extra info about him is unknown). They had a couple children. Peter Brown passed and Mariah married a Benjamin Berry and had a child in 1870 named Benjamin Berry. All that I mentioned were in Fauquier County. I am trying to find a connection in my Berry family to these Benjamin Berrys.
