Virginia did NOT require birth and death certificates until 1912.That is what I meant by them being mandated. You will not find a birth certificate on ANYONE before 1912 as they just did not keep them and the date of your relative's birth is too early even for their Christening records which start about 1853,and even those are spotty.You will have to ask the SAR what they will accept in lieu of one. Usually it is a census record or two which shows when he was born.
