When Aaron Herren died, Elizabeth may have taken her children to the Pendleton District and got some help from some Herren relatives that lived near Anderson. She was probably living with someone there when the 1800 census was taken and that is the reason she soes not show. She was back in Edgefield by 1804 because she was married to Christian Limbecker by then.

Thomas W. Brooks and wife Eliza Ann &
Lewis Busby and wife Mary
South Carolina
Abbeville District

To the Honorable the Chancellors of said State-Humbly complaining showeth unto your Honors your Orator and Oratrix Lewis Busby and Mary his wife of said state and District as follows died in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred And thirty two, and left surviving his his wife Lucy Pulliam who died in August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight Hundred and thirty six, leaving four daughters to wit your Oratrix, Mahala now the wife of Mathew H. Bryson who lives in Alabama, Rhoda now the wife of William Sanders who live in Pontotoc County, Mississippi, and Eliza Ann now the wife of Thomas W. Brooks who live in Abbeville District. All these children of Lucy Pulliam have married since her death.
Rhoda Pulliam, who was the widow of James Pulliam deceased was possessed of considerable property and in or about the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five gave and delivered to your Oratrix and her sisters named aforesaid who had but small means a negro woman named Leah and daughter Ally. Whatever the precise terns aft said Gift was your Orator and Oratrix assert there was a substantial and legal gift of said Leah and her said daughter to the Sisters of your Oratrix with herself and actual delivery of the said slaves accompanied for some time by possession and that the little ____ said slaves passed from said Rhoda Pulliam to your Oratrix and her sisters aforesaid. Some time after the said Leah and her child Ally had been in the possession of your Oratrix and her sisters Leah proved inciente and the time of her delivery approaching Leah returned to Rhoda Pulliam for the purpose of receiving some comforts and attention which your Oratrix and sisters had not the means to bestow upon her. Soon after this return of Leah to Rhoda Pulliam your Oratrix mother Lucy Pulliam died, and your Oratrix and her sisters ceased to live together and they had before and lived among their friends and relatives. For this reason your Oratrix alleges the said Leah who now had some children was returned to or repurchased by said Rhoda from J. P. Coleman and as your Orter and Oratrix have heard and believe on account of the acknowledge right of you Oratrix and her Sisters. They said Leah and her children who increased rapidly in number thu unmarried in the possession of Rhoda Pulliam until her death and during this time the said Rhoda always acknowledged the rights of your Oratrix and sisters to said slaves and never put in jeopardy their right by a claim of any interest on her part but wished _____ the use of Leah and her children until her death, which possession was entirely permissive on the part of your Oratrix and sisters and not adverse to their rights. On the twenty sixth day of June Anno Domino one thousand eight hundred and forty six the said Rhoda Pulliam died in possession of said slaves leaving no will and of her estate Thomas Byrd is the administrator upon whom soon afterwards a demand of Leah and her children was made whom he refused to deliver.
Proceeding at once against the said Thomas B. Byrd would have been instituted, but the title of Rhoda Pulliam at a time prior to the gift aforesaid was in litigation and your Orator and Oratrix availed the result of this controversy which resulted in favor of the title of Rhoda Pulliam. In this contest the rights of your Oratrix and her sisters was not at all involved. So soon as the question of title to said slaves was settled as above an action of controversy was instituted by the defendant and Thomas W. Brooks for his interest in said slaves in which he was nonsuited upon the ground that such action could not be maintained for an undivided interest in slaves existing in right of a ?fione avvast his wife. This claim though apparently long delayed is one to which your Orator and Oratrix have been always alive and which has always been urged by some of the parties in interest.
At the death of Rhoda Pulliam, Leah had the following children, Ally, Caleb, Hannah, Sarah, Winny, Adam, Melzao and since then, has had Francis and an infant not named. Since the death of Rhoda Pulliam the said slaves have been in the possession of the said Thomas B. Byrd, who however does not claim them in his own right but only as the administrator of his said interest.
Your Orator and Oratrix charge that the hire of these slaves since the death of said Rhoda Pullliam is of the value of Five Hundred and Seventy five dollars per annum.
Your Orator and Oratrix desire that in as much as these slaves have been raised among the relations of your Oratrix and being the gift of a relation have in their estimation a peculiar value and the desire and ask the aid of this court for this specific delivery of said slaves for the purpose of partition between your Orator and Oratrix and her sisters and Thier husband. The aunt of kin of Rhoda Pulliam, who have an interest in the result of this litigation are so far as your Orator knows Fanny Mitchell, living in Alabama, Anna Cooper living in Mississippi, Larkin Pulliam, nephew of said Rhoda Pulliam son of John Pulliam deceased, the next of kin of Charles Fooshe, deceased whose names are not at this moment known to hour Orator and Oratrix and when known they will be ? interest in the bill, Zachariah Gholstein and Benjamin Gholstein, children of Elezabeth Gholstein deceased who live in Georgia.

1ST REGIMENT RIFLES
Known as Orr's Rifles, was organized at Sandy Springs, South Carolina, in July, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Abbeville, Pickens, Anderson, and Marion. The unit was first stationed on Sullivan's Island and called by the other troops "The Pound Cake Regiment" because of its light duty. Then in April, 1862, it moved to Virginia with 1,000 men. Assigned to General Gregg's and McGowan's Brigade it fought with the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. Later the regiment endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches and the Appomattox operations. Of the 537 engaged at Gaines' Mill, fifty-nine percent were killed, wounded, or missing. The unit reported 116 casualties at Second Manasses and 170 at Fredericksburg, then lost forty-none percent of the 233 at Chancellorsville and three percent of the 366 at Gettysburg. There were 12 killed and 81 wounded at The Wilderness, 15 killed, 36 wounded, and 44 missing at Spotsylvania, 3 killed and 34 wounded at Deep Bottom, and 9 killed and 37 wounded at Poplar Springs Church. It surrendered 9 officers and 148 men. The field officers were Colonels Daniel A. Ledbetter, James W. Livingston, J. Foster Marshall, George M. Miller, James L. Orr, and James M. Perrin; Lieutenant Colonels William M. Hadden, J. E. Harrison, Joseph J. Norton, and James T. Robertson; and Majors John B. Moore and Leonard Rogers.

July 14, 1863 THE GETTYSBURG CAMPAIGN
What seems to have happened was that in the morning of the 14th, while in pursuit of Lee's army, Buford's division coming from the east and Kilpatrick's from the north approached the position occupied by Heth's division on a ridge about a mile and a half from Falling Waters. Pender's division on a ridge about a mile and a half from Falling Waters. Pender's division lay back of Heth's waiting its turn to march over the pontoon bridge. Kilpatrick arrived a little ahead of Buford. His attack was a complete surprise, and he caught the Confederates, who were tired out from the night's hard march, napping amidst their stacked and unloaded arms. Fortunately for the Southerners Kilpatrick generalship was faulty. He permitted two small squadrons without any supports to rush ahead and make the initial charge, but they only served to alert the enemy without causing him Much harm, except for the loss of General Pettigrew who in the melee received a mortal wound. The Confederates, wielding Thier rifles as clubs and in some instances using fence rails or axes, knocked most of the troopers from their horses and killed or wounded them. Kilpatrick, however, renewed his attack, while Buford struck the Confederates on their right and rear. Before Heth could get this own and Pender's division across the river, they had lost 719 officers and men as prisoners; of these about 230 came from Brockenbrough's' brigade, which had borne much of the fighting, and nearly 200 from Colonel Lowrance's (Scales's) Buford reported he had captured over 500 prisoners, Kilpatrick claimed upwards of 1,500, Meade combined the two and set the figure at 2,000, but Lee admitted the loss of only an indeterminate number of stragglers. However, General Patrick, whose responsibility it was to herd all prisoners, confirmed that Buford's figures were quite accurate. The Yankees might have make an even greater haul of rebels if Kilpatrick had exercised greater control over his men and coordinated his movements with Buford's.

The grandchildren of Shelton O. and Anna Eugenia Brooks Shore remember Anna telling the story of how her father, Thomas W. Brooks, Jr., was once hiding from Union soldiers and scared them away from the house by dressing himself up as a ghost with a white cotton beard and flour on his face and appearing in an upstairs window. This must have been after he was discharged and sent home. This would mean that the home they were living in Cokesbury had a second floor.

Thomas Warren Brooks was called a Captian on the railroad-he was responsible for laying the tracks in all the places that he lived. He wore a watch with a chain made from his mother's hair. When he returned to Greenville, SC and continued to work on the railroads in Ft. Inn, SC, he lost his leg in a railroad accident. He walked with a wooden leg from that time on. His interest in the railroad may have been spurred by the fact that Cynthia Jane Strawhorns' family owned property in Greenwood, SC adjoining the new railroad station. The railroad tracks were being laid in Greenwood County during the time that Warren and Cynthia Jane lived there. The tracks he laid followed the Broad River.

THE SOUTHERN RAILROAD

Greenwood, SC got its first railroad, the Greenville & Columbia, in 1852 after out-bidding neighboring Laurens in a spirited competition to get the first track in the upstate.
Between 1852 and 1929, Greenwood, SC got five more railroads.
The Greenwood & Augusta
The Piedmont and Northern
The Seaboard Air Line (later merged into the Seaboard Coastline)
Georgia & Florida joined the Greenville & Columbia (later the Southern)

Greenwood, Abbeville, Newberry, McCormick, Edge field, Laurens and other places, big and little in South Carolina were tank towns. That was when the railroads had to store water in huge wooden tanks beside a track, to supply the steam engines.

These grotesque kettles or tubs averaged 15 to 18 feet wide, and almost as deep. They stood on heavy upright timbers. At the bottom edge was a big pipe, like the straight neck of a kettle, long enough to reach across the track. This pipe worked on a hinge, at the bottom, so it could stay straight up against the tank to avoid the engine.

THE PICKENS SENTINEL- Nov. 9, 1876

Imprisoning Free Voters of a Free State for Partisan Ends

The arrest of free Democratic voters of this County last week, just before the election, was one of the most high-handed proceeding ever known in this County. The object was so apparent that the dullest mind could see through it. The marshals, perhaps, thinking that othello's occupation would soon be gone, were anxious to seize any pretext to make a few greenbacks, and at the same time keep themselves in good order withe their masters. Another reason moving these loyal adherents of Grant, Chamberlain and Company, was doubtless a desire to intimidate the Democrats in the County, and drive back to their ranks those of their party who had renounced it. The whole scheme was infamous to say the least of it and language fails us to denounce the whole proceedings before the U.S. Commissioner, from the Greenville News:
The following free Democratic voters were brought to this city on Wednesday night, under arrest, by Secretary Taft's Marshals, charged with the offense "intimidation and threats:"
Robert W. Holcombe, Preston Brooks, Charles Martin, Kirk Mauldin, William A. Clyde, Easley Station.
William Singleton, David Gilstrap, Pickens.
Johnathan Dark, Elias Holcombe, Liberty
We append the form of warrant for arrest, showing the section under which the indietment is brought, & et.

THE PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION OF PARTIES ARRESTED IN PICKENS COUNTY ON THE CHARGE OF "INTIMIDATION AND THREATS"

United States vs. Jonathan Dark, Elias Holcombe, Chrles Martin, Kirk Mauldin, Robert Holcombe, W. A. Clyde, David Gilstrap, W. O. Singleton, Preston Brooks, (no relation of the former member of Congress), Mr. Meeder, John R. Latham and Reese Bown, Jr.-indicted for intimidation and threats.
The above stated cases was up for preliminary examination before U.S. Commissioner T.M. Wilkes on yesterday. The entire day was taken up in the examination of the witnesses for the government. The Defendants were represented by Mr. Child, of Pickens C.H. Messrs. J. H. Whitner, E. P. Jones, G. G. Wells, M. F. Ansel., W. W. Vance and W. H. Perry of Greenville.
The examination of the witnesses was concluded about 61/2 o'clock P.M., when the Commissioner stated that he would look over the testimony, and make his decision by 10 o'clock.
The weight of the testimony, as adduced by the witnesses on the stand is to the effect, that there was some loud talking by some persons at the meeting held at Pickens Court House on the 28 of October last, but that there was positively no threats, intimidation or violence made or used by any person present that day. The speakers were heard by all persons present, who desired to hear them, an the loud talking was of no great extent than is usual at political meetings of either party. Some of Pickens County testify that there was no threats, intimidation, or violence made, or used, or attempted to be made or used by any one on the ground that day. The witnesses further testify that there were no Arms used or attempted to be used on threat day by any person; and that, with one or two exceptions, there were no arms seen on the ground that day. In our opinion, from the testimony the government has utterly failed to make out her case against either of the parties charged as above-and our idea of the whole matter is simply this: That our political enemies were under the impression that taking the bold step of arresting some of the best citizens of Pickens County, they might intimidate the Democratic voters and keep them away from the polls: but we are glad to say that our Pickens friends wont intimidate worth a cent.
There proceedings are had just in time, as our enemies suppose, to effect their infamous purpose.
When the facts and movies of these federal intimidators are made public, a righteous judgment will consign them to the infamy they deserve.
At 10 o'clock Commission Wildes rendered his decision, discharging six of the parties arrested, and continuing for further examination the others, who are released on giving bond for their appearance when the Commissioner returns. Mr. Wilkes was obliged to return to his post this morning. We are pleased to note the courtesy with which he conducted the examination.

OUR DEAD
Prof. Lake Brooks

On Friday, April 5, 1929, in the Government T.B. Hospital at Johnson City, Tenn. Prof. Lake Brooks lost his last battle in life-that to regain his health. His doctors said of: "No man in all their experience tried harder to get well than Lake Brooks." When he realized _____________ he had no fears of death, but he did try so hard for two years to get well for the sake of his good wife and three sweet children.
Lake Brooks was an honor graduate form Wofford College in 1917, and soon after his graduation he entered the U.S. Army and served during the World War. As soon as the War was over he took up school teaching as a life work: and it was while teaching in his first school-the Ebenezer school in Florence county that he met and won the heart and hand of Miss Viola Jeffords, a graduate nurse and daughter of Mr. Sam E. Jeffords of Timmonsville.
The writer of this sketch first knew Lake Brooks in College. He was a Senior. I was a Freshman. He was a real friend to the lower classman, especially the Freshmen. He was known by them to be a young man with a remarkable personality and Christian character. But it was not until I became the friend of Lake Brooks and intimately associated with him in church and school work, that I knew his real worth-what a great soul he was! To know Lake Brooks was to love him: and to have association with him was to be lifted up.
He was for six years superintendent of the Hickory Grove schools, and during that time won a warm place in the hearts of both the children and the parents of the whole community. He was a friend to all, and loved everybody
and no one in the community was more loved and respected by everybody, and his influence was always for good everywhere. He was an active church member, ever present at the services, taught the Ladies Bible Class, and was a steward in the Mount Vernon Methodist church. He was a man of great faith and prayer, truly a devout Christian. And the best of all, God was with him to the end! His sweet spirit toward all, and even toward death itself, deeply impressed all the doctors and nurses who came in contact with him. One of his doctors while sitting by the bed was heard to say, "My God, how helpless I feel that there is nothing more I can do to help Mr. Brooks: and he is such a brilliant and good man. The world so badly needs men like him.!
Shortly before the great soul of Brooks took its flight "far beyond the starry sky" he uttered the chorus of his favorite hymn. "Jesus, Jesus, sweetest Name I know, Fills my every longing, Keeps me singing as I go."
He is survived by his good wife, Mrs. Viola Jeffords Brooks, and three small children, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Brooks of Fountain Inn: and the following brothers and sisters: J.E. Brooks of Sumter, Mrs. J .L .Gray of Alliance, Ohio, J. T. Brooks, Jr., H. C. Brooks, G. S. Brooks, and Miss Nannie Brooks of Fountain Inn, and Mrs. C. G. Hipp of Owings.
His funeral service was held in the beautiful Pisgah Methodist church, near Timmonsville, Tuesday, April 9, at 11 o'clock with the writer of this sketch in charge of the service, assisted by the following: Revs. S. H. Booth, J. R. Johnson, Mark Osborne, and Mrs. Mason Smith.
The body was laid to rest in the church yard, close by the church, under a great band of the most beautiful flowers, while a great company of relatives and friends from far and near sat and stood by with sad hearts and bowed heads-yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die."
Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord."

J.D. Manly, Prominent Road Contractor, Dies

John Dodson Manly, 65, one of Florida's prominent road building contractors, died here this morning after an illness of several months.
Mr. Manly owned the J. D. Manly Construction Company and several subsidiary firms in the Leesburg area. He also was a citrus grower and extensive real estate holdings.
A soft spoken man, he was well liked in the community and gave generously to charity and worthwhile civic. One friend remarked this morning: " He have away more than a lot of people make." But it was part of his credo to say nothing about it to anyone.
Mr. Many died after the second of two heart attacks. He had been recovering from surgery at Duke University about six months ago.
A native of Toccoa, Ga., Mr. Manly came to Leesburg with his family in 1924.
