I believe that the husband of Mary Ann Bartlett, Joseph A. Brown may be the son of George and Susannah Green Brown (my direct line through Daniel & Dorcas Martin Brown). Daniel was an older brother of Joseph A. Brown.

Can anyone verify this?

Doris (Brown) Basile
dbasile46@hotmail.com

Benjamin Allen d.1790 Clark Co., KY

I'm researching a Benjamin Allen who was killed by Indians December 1790 in Clark Co., KY. He migrated to Clark Co., KY in 1790 from what was probably Hampshire Co., VA at that time but had been part of Frederick Co. From an interview his son Benjamin did with Shane c1850, they lived in several places up along on the VA side of the Potomac near Maryland and Pennsylvania.

In particular I am wondering if any male decendant of this Benjamin Allen has taken a DNA test.

A Michael W. Ragan posted some years ago that this Benjamin was his brick wall on a Ragan board.
I have never been successful in finding a marriage for siblings who lived in Stephenson. William A.(?)Shuler was born 1834 and Elizabeth was born 1838. Their parents were Conrad and Mary Green Shuler born 1803-4. Elizabeth went to live with an aunt, Mary (Polly) Bryson, in Wadesville sometime after her father's and mother's death. It seems to me there was some association with the Helvestine(s) in Berryville for her. I have nothing more on William Shuler.
Anybody have these folks in their family tree? Can you check your marriage records for William and Elizabeth and there possible marriages. It would be great even if someone found there deaths. Thanks for all you do. s

Seek contact with either Mildred Peer (wife of Homer Peer?)or sister Bertha Calvert. Believe Mildred lived on Lauck Drive in Winchester. Have no idea if these ladies are still living but would like contact with anyone who knew them if they are deceased. They were living in January of 1997 when Howard Clifton Miller of Sunnyside Station died at the local hospital.
Howard is a relative whose family I am researching. I seek any information concerning Howard and his family: Harrison C.H. Miller and Nancy Combs Miller of Hardy Co., WV. Although I visited Giffin Funeral Home when Howard died there was no one available to speak with and he was the last member of his immediate family.
thanks for any leads or info. s

Hi, I see you have a date for the death of John McCool father of James Adams McCool. You have 2 July 1729. What is your source. You are related so do you have a family bible or a document, or a Monthly Meeting death date. I was wondering because I haven't been able to find a document. And would you know if Olivia's last name was McCracken. Someone on line says it is but they have not answered my emails. I can't find any documents with her last name. It sure would help if you could communicate with me and share our information. I have quite a bit on Walter and his wife Mary Pugh.
Just FYI, there is also a Matthias Lauterbach born 28 Nov 1754 in Pilesgrove, Salem Co., NJ. He was the son of Conrad Lauterbach, who came to the US with his brother Peter in 1737. Both men settled in Salem County, NJ by the mid 1740s. Conrad married Elisabeth Jonsson.
Matthias served in the RW with his twin brother, Adam and another brother Conrad. Matthias died sometime after 1797.
Matthias married Ann Curry in 1776 in Swedesboro, NJ and they had nine children. One of their daughters married Jesse Avis/Avise and moved to Illinois.

I realize this is a very old query, but just in case....
The bondsman for this marriage was my mystery ancestor, David T. Davis, in one of his very rare appearances. As bondsmen were usually closely connected to one or the other of the people getting married, this Sergeant/Clarke marriage interests me. David was married at that time to Betsy Young, and was formerly married to Elizabeth Hedges. C 1827 David was killed while living in Adams co Ohio. If you have any information on the background or connections of this couple, please respond.

Shepard McCoy (born 1830) is my great, great, grandfather. I live very near his farm. His name used to be McKay. It was changed in 1878 to McCoy. My understanding is he was the illegitimate child of Enos McKay. I am having a very hard time finding physical proof, but that is what has been passed down through the family. My 80 year old mother was told that information when she lived as a child on the home farm. Shepard is buried in the McCoy family cemetery on River Road, Elkton, Virginia.

I am researching the Marquis/Marcus family. In the book the Proceedings of the Clarke County Historical Association, pages 6/7, I located the following:
Another soldier who served throughout the French and Indian Wars and who attained the rank of Major was Marquis Calmes, a rench Huguenot. He was among the Huguenots who came to Virginia and settled on the james. having had experience in the planting and cultivation of vineyards, he was employed by NathanielB urwell to experiment with the dulture of grapes on B urwell's lands in Frederick County. Calmes was accompanied by two uncles, brothers to his mother, William and James Marquis. it was on the land of Mr. Burwell that Calmes plantedthe first vineyard in the Shenandoah Valley. The place on which he lived and experimented in the raising of grapes is still known as the "Vineyard". After his arrival in Clarke County, he received a grant from Lord Fairfax; this patent is known as Calmes Neck. Marquis Calmes was one of the justices that constituted the first court in Frederick County.

Interested in finding out where Margaret Anderson may have been buried. Believe she passed away in 1859, born approx 1801.
thanks in advance.

-Donna Carter

There were several cemeteries in the Winchester/Frederick County area during and before 1859. The main one in Winchester is Mt. Hebron. It has a website: http://www.mthebroncemetery.org/index.html

You might also like to try the Handley Library in Winchester. They may be able to tell you what cemeteries were around at the time. Also, they have several volumes listing burials that were compiled by residents of the area.

A search of findagrave.com find a Margaret A Anderson b. 1813, d. 1843 buried in Brucetown United Methodist Church Cemetery in Clear Brook, Fredk. Co., VA.

Good luck

Hello. You might call/email the Stewart Bell Jr Archives in the basement of the Handley Library in Winchester for help on this info. Was just there today looking in a folder on this very John Anderson. He wasn't the man I was hoping he was and I'm sorry to say, I didn't pay attention to his parentage. The file name is MMF John Anderson 1758-1836 papers.
archives@handleyregional.org
Joan Wood is the archivist there.
Good luck!

All, I am looking for information on the two people listed above, John Peter (Johannes Pieter) Orndorff, who arrived in Philadelphia in 1753 and made his way west to Frederick County, VA where he died in 1798. He raised a family with his second wife, Hannah in this county, I have learned from my search. He had many children in this area--are there any decendants who can share information such as burial, will, and birth/marriages of his children? My husband is descended through Jesse, born 1780, veteran of the War of 1812 and died ~ 1816. If there is a directory of wills on line, or wills/births/ deaths available on line, please let me know. Thank you very much.

the census states "stepson".
census are often wrong. however, IF the census is correct, then willie is johns stepson as all relationships go to the head of household. IF he is really johns stepson, then willie is the natural son of a wife of johns. willies mother, per the census, was born in ohio, as was hester. where was hester before she wed john? was john previously married, was hester, when did they wed-or did the person giving the answers mis-speak. good luck . sometimes it takes a long time, and most records are still not online.

Mary E. Fredd (who married Mansel) and John D. Fredd (who married Hester Loper) were siblings. On the 1880 census, John Fredd, Hester S. (possibly Swann), and "Willie" aged 4 (stepson) AND Sadie Swann (niece) are listed. Upon John D. Fredd's death, Willie (William) in a letter questions his Aunt Mary regarding his birth parents. John D. Fredd may have had a second (?) wife after Hester died. Possibly Eva J. Johnson marriage in 1897 in Arapahoe County, Colorado.

John Anderson born 30 Jul 1758-Frederick County

I am looking for the parents of John Anderson who according to his Revolutionary Pension File was born on 30 Jul 1758 in Frederick County, Virginia. He also indicates he married there in 1784 to Ann Clark. Are there tax lists or something that might indicate who his parents were? John moved on to Davidson County, TN by 1808 and died there. His pension file also lists his children's names. His first son was named Benjamin, which might indicate his father's name? Ann Clark was the daughter of Oliver Clark.

Re: Ogden/Breeze

Will be glad to share what little I know....Thomas Ogden was married before he married Sarah Breeze. He came into the Frederick Co. VA area with two children: A daughter named Eliza (born 1812) and a son John Thomas (born 1814) my great great grandfather. Tkheir mother must have died when or shortly after John Thomas was born; no one has been able to find out her name. Thomas was in his 40's when he came into the western part of Virginia - family stories say he came from eastern Virginia; census of 1850 says he was born in England..so he could have married several times, who knows? We have not had any luck determining his father or mother. He remains a mystery.

Gene,
For the record, McDaniel is the misspelling of McDonald. There is so such name as McDaniel in Celtic lines. Often, English Americans anglicized names when taking census reports, and the name "McDaniel(s) was created. McDonald, likewise, is the anglicization of Mhicdhomhneil and its variants in Scot and Irish Gaelic.
D. McDonald
