I am looking for information on a James and Parthenia Taylor of Giles Co. I dont have a maiden name for Parthenia altho I have found a Pathenia that seems likely but her maiden name was Taylor also. She was born 1829 in Doe Creek, Giles, Va. and died 07 Feb 1879 in Waters Sinking, Giles, Va. They had a son C. Paris Taylor that was born in 1851. I have no iformation on James, he seems to have disappeared from their lives somewhere between 1860-1870. Any info would be helpful.

I am looking for an article written in a newspaper on May 26, 1909. I only have a partial transcript and am wanting the entire article. I do not know for sure, but the paper was believed to be from Pearisburg.

The article is about my 3rd great grandfather, John Crawford. It is written as a letter to the editor. It is addressed as follows -

To the Editor of the Virginian
I have just read in a recent issue of your paper of the death of Comrade John Randolph Crawford...etc...
It looks like the writer was from Portland, OR.

Is there anyone that can help, maybe a lookup? I am also interested in the previous article that the writer mentioned.

Thanks so much.

My personal email is
venezia@suddenlink.net

Thanks again,
Sandy

Wow! If I have my lineage facts correct (don't we all?) then you and my husband would be distant cousins. You're probably exactly who I need to talk to about this line.

My husband's great-grandfather was John Harvey Flick (b: 1875 Giles County). He married a Caldwell from Mercer County WV. According to marriage records in Mercer County, John's parents were Edward and Ann. I also found a record of a marriage in 1872 for Ed Flick, son of John M N Flick and and Ann Bruce and Ann Hale, daughter of John D and Jane Hale.

I have also seen Ann (wife of Ed, mother of John H) listed as Caroline Ann. If you think I'm on the right track, I'd love to exchange information with you. I'm trying to finish up a Flick Family Book for a reunion next month and this piece of the puzzle would help tons. HALE was b. 1815-1816 in Giles Co, VA, and d. 17 Apr 1864 in Appomattox, VA, while serving in Co. E, 86th Regt., Virginia Militia. He was the son of Charles HALE, and grandson of Revolutionary War veteran Edward HALE. On 4 Jan 1835 he married in Giles Co, VA, Jane JOHNSTON (b. abt. 1816, dau of John B. JOHNSTON and Elizabeth STAFFORD). The couple and these children are listed on the Pearisburg, Giles Co, VA, census of 1860. Children were: Catherine, Charles, Martha B., Bacy, Margaret, William, John, Caroline, Mary, George, and Clay (the latter two were twins). Martha B. HALE m. William W.
Yes, in the index there are Flicks, Caldwells and Hales mentioned in both books. I did not see any family histories for Flicks. In book #1, there are stories on Wyson Caldwell, J. G. Caldwell, Dan & Leona Hale, Herbert & Mary Hale, Hopkins-Hale, Leonard Hale Family, Rufus C. Hale and Edward Hale, b. 1750. In book II, Caldwell/Martin, Otis Groves Caldwell, Siosa & Alexander Caldwell, Hale-Crow, and Frederick Perry Hale Family.

Hey Don, my name is Jason Kirk. The Kirk reunion is the last Sunday in August at the Wesley Chapel Church. You should stop by if you are in the area. Someone there may be able to locate this house for you. Silas C. Overstreet had a daughter named Bertie (I assume she is the Bert you refer to). Bertie married my gg grabdfather, Webster Kirk. Bertie and Webster are buried at the Kirk Cemetery off of Bear Spring Road just a couple of miles from the Wesley Chapel in Trigg. Was Silas A. Overstreet a son of Silas C. Overstreet? My grandfather was just a young boy in 1927 but will be at the reunion in August and may know the location of the house. He lives in Rich Creek. Keep in touch.

I think he had a child with a woman from Kentucky named Lorinda Roe or Rowe and that child was a girl named Mary J Harless who married a Josephus Scott ?
And maybe there was a daughter named Indiana by a second wife who married a William Woddyard...I do know that George was a Confederate veteran and had a brother named Russell and a sister named Mary..and I am pretty sure he stayed in Giles Co.
I hope to hear from someone who might be related..thank you

My family comes from Giles County Virginia - back before 1860. I do not recognize any of the names you list, and by 1943 my family had moved to Lee County Virginia. What I have noticed in doing research is that the name is spelled many different ways. For the last 4 generations our branch of the family has spelled the name "NIDA", however in civil war and other records the name is spelled "NIDAY" and "NIDEY". I don't know if different spellings will be useful to you or not, but I thought I would mention the possibility, since it has occurred in my line

I have been searching for a very long time and today it struck me why not to try a Message Board.
I would love to hear from anyone of Mary's or Sydney's families or anyone else who might be able to straighten out what we know and what we think we know.

Madison Haines Lucas was the son of Susanna Lucas who was the daughter of Parker Lucas and Margaret Price. He was not related to Charles Straley. Susanna and Charles were married Nov. 28, 1835. In August 1836, at the age of 16, Madison appeared in court and with the courts consent, choose Philip Lybrook as his guardian. It's possible he was going to apprentice under Philip, however I don't know that for a fact. According to family, he was a blacksmith by trade. Also, though it hasn't or can't be proven, according to my great aunt who was Madison's great granddaughter, Madison's father was a Hale. Madison was born Mar. 28, 1820 and died Apr. 28, 1894.

Susanna died around 1842, give or take. In a letter by Philip Lybrook, dated Feb. 17, 1843, he had written to his brother Henley Lybrook and talked about a fever hitting the area and names some of those in his neighborhood who had died, among them was listed Susanna Straley.

Madison and most of his family moved to Lincoln County in 1870, settling nearest to Myra. My family line from Madison has remained near that same area clear up to now. Madison was my great great great grandfather. My line comes down through his son Parker to Henry Rock to Chauncey Rock to Chauncey L (my dad). If you look at findagrave.com, you can find the memorial's with headstone photo's and family links for Madison, Henry, and Chauncey Rock Lucas.

I'll be happy to help if I can with any other questions you may have.
I am so unsure of how to use anything from the U of Va Library and I was wondering if you could give me some guidance. I could find that they have some reels that might have the information that I have been trying to find for so long. And the information says these reels are available for Interlibrary Loans. How do I find out how to do that ? I live in a small town in Georgia . We do have a Public Library. Do you think I can go there and request to borrow some reels?.I wondered if a Mormon Church History Center might have this info..but we do not have one of those here.
I copied down the reels that have possibilities.Do you do the Interlibrary Loans ?
I have tried to find a connection in Richmond through our family..but to no avail. If necessary, and it might be, I can maybe get there next fall..any advice ?

thanks so much for help !
Cherie

Child of Susanna Lucas and Charles Straley

Looking for pedigree of Madison Haines Lucas, b @ 1820 in Giles Co. Va In some places, his mother is listed as Susanna Lucas and that she was married to Charles Straley in 1835-all in Giles County. I have Susanna's death as 1836. Her Lucas family is one of the New River, VA families. Madison Haines Lucas had three wives: Malinda Rock, with whom he had 5 children, Nancy Moser, no children and Mary Jane Link, with whom he had six children. They migrated to Lincoln County, WV. Any info would be appreciated.
Hi, and thank you for your response.
I am also a great granddaughter of Henrietta.
My grandmother was Minnie. Who was your grandmother?
I have pictures of most of Henrietta's daughters, but
none of her. I have attached a picture of Mertie, Minnie, Glenna and Margarette.
Would you share the picture of Henrietta with me?
Thanks so much,
Sharon
