Thanks so much for your advice! It sounds like I need to make the trip to find out if the Chancery Court records are available. I have researched in the microfilmed records of the Library of Virginia and the Family History Library. My ancestor died about 1827 and has no probate record. He was involved in many law suits before his death--unfortunately the Court Minute book for 1827-1828 is missing (or not microfilmed).
