Benjamin GOODMAN & his wife Rose HANKIN, my grandaughter's gr-grandparents, lived in Richmond, Va with their 2 children. Benjamin GOODMAN owned a mens clothing store near the farmers market where the farmers would pull up their wagons -take the horses to the stable- and sell their produce. The farmers would come into Benjamin GOODMANÂ’s store and if they didnÂ’t have money, he would sell them shoes or whatever they needed and they would pay him in produce. In the depression when the stock market crashed in 1929 he lost everything and went out of business. The family continued to live in Richmond, Va and he bought into business with his youngest brother, Harry GOODMAN who had a beer distributing business in Norfolk, Va. This meant he had to spend several days at a time in Norfolk, Va away from his family. Rose HANKIN GOODMAN outlived Benjamin by 20 years, dying 30 Jul 1989 in Richmond, Virginia.
The 1900 Baltimore City, Md census has a family living at 22 High Street which I think might the emigrant ancestors, Henry & Anita GOODMAN. It is Henry GOODMAN 40 b May 1860 Russia living at 22 High Street, Baltimore, Maryland; wife Anna 35 b Mar 1865 Russia; son Benjamin 14 b Jun 1885 Russia; Rachel 11 b Nov 1888 Russia; Louis 9 b Nov 1890 Russia; Morris 7 b Nov 1892 Russia; Sarah 6 b Apr 1896 Russia and Lena 1 b Nov 1898 Maryland. This family would have emigrated to the U.S. between 1896 and 1898 when the last child was born in Maryland. This GOODMAN family emigrated from Poland-perhaps from a Russian occupied area of Poland.
