THE HENRY BULLETIN, Martinsville, Va., Fri., Oct. 18, 1929, p. 1, col. 6 [edited]. Thomas A. Ranson, 70 years old and prominent citizen and former merchant of this city, passed away at his home in Southside Martinsville Thursday morning following a lingering illness of several weeks. Mr. Ranson had been in declining health for the past several months, and several weeks ago sustained serious injuries at his home, when he fell, fracturing a leg and injuring him internally from which he failed to recover. The deceased is survived by his widow and one adopted son, Maurice Hairston Ranson, both of this city. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon from his late home on Smith River road, and interment made in Oakwood Cemetery.
The paper dated Tue., Oct. 22, 1929, p. 1, col. 7, added the following information. Mr. Ranson spent the best years of his life in Martinsville, having lived here 43 years, and in his earlier days was one of the foremost merchants of our city. After his marriage in 1894 to Miss Callie Hairston, daughter of the late Col. and Mrs. Peter Hairston, he retired from the mercantile business to take charge of his farm and there spent the remainder of his days, spending much of his time raising delicious fruit for his friends and loved ones. Mr. Ranson was a consistent member of the Presbyterian church until a few years ago, he joined the Episcopal church where he could worship with his devoted wife and son who survive him. Among the out of town friends who attended the funeral were Misses Lydie and Nannie Hairston and Mrs. W. H Hairston of Roanoke, Miss Mattie Hairston of Hordsville, Robert Hairston and daughter, Mrs. Jarold Donovant of Reidsville, N.C. and others.
