Hi Linda,

I'm sorry that I was unaware of your post 12 years ago until a most recent post that drew me back to this site. I never received notification of your post. Unfortunately, I am not the James Miller you are seeking. The Millers of my family are from northern VA. Perhaps the surname Miller in King & Queen & Essex Counties may have origin in the town of Miller's Tavern on highway US 360 in Essex County, VA.

Hi Veronica,

Thank You for your inquiry. My gg grandfather, James Thomas Hampton, Sr. may have been born in slavery in K&Q in the 1840s or 1850s. He lived into the early 1900s. I don't know about the Hamptons before him. He had a sister, Judy Hampton Ware, who is one of the matriarchs of the Baughn-Ware family of K&Q. Do you have any source info about James Hampton born in 1805? My gg grandfather had a daughter named Mary Eliza, my g-grandfather Charles's sister. She would be quite young, born in the 1870s or 1880s. She may be named after a predecessor with the name Eliza. I am not familiar with Dangerfield Hampton, but would like to know more about him. Perhaps there are connections to our families. Please keep me posted and I'll keep you posted on any new findings.

Hi James,My name is Veronica I'm researching my gg grandfather Dangerfield Hampton who was born in KQ county around 1825. I'm would like to know how much you know about James Hampton who born around 1805. Dangerfield was tricked into slavery around 1840 and sold in Madison Ga. After slavery he came back to K&G around 1891 to visit two sisters who were still living there. One of his sisters was named Elivra or Eliza.

Unfortunately, 99.99% of all county records from before 1864 were destroyed in 1864 by Union troops conducting a "vengeance raid" relating to the infamous "Dahlgren Affair". Only a single Vestry Book and a few marriage licenses (About a dozen) survive from before that time. Birth records were not kept by the county until the mid 1800's and ended in the 1890's.

Any help or information you could provide would be great!

"Thornton" was a name associated with the Smiths in Richmond Co., VA in the early-mid-1700s (a Thomas Thornton, son of a Luke Thornton, married Susannah Smith, daughter of a William Smith). There was also a Catherine Smith who was mentioned on a marriage bond (as a witness or surety) in Richmond Co., VA in 1817. You should look at the Richmond Co., VA message board here on RootsWeb (and also the Smith message board for posts associated with Richmond Co., VA)...ditto the GenForum message boards.

Sincerely,
Danni Mroczkowski
Danielle Harvey Mroczkowski

Hi,
Are you still doing look-ups? I am searching for anything on this line of my ancestors.

My great grandfather was Edward Lyle Muir, bn 1904. His father, Clarence Lyle bn 1874 King & Queen Co, & his mother Martha Virginia Ridgley. I believe Clarence's father was Marcus Aurelius Muire.

As I understand it from family stories, when Clarence married Martha Virginia, aka Mattie V, his plantation owning family disowned him. Children born were: Edward Lyle, Elfridia Virginia, & Paul. Mattie divorced Clarence & took two children (Elfridia &Paul) with her to FL/LA area. Mattie married another 4-6 people.

I am interested in anything on the history of Clarence & Mattie, the history of the plantation owning family, anything regarding the country they immigrated from, anything on the children Elfridia Virginia & Paul, basically anything.

Thank you for your consideration & help,

Dawn Stubbs
dstubbs98@hotmail.com

I'm researching this line from Hugh LeRoy (b.1616 England d. 1657 Essex Co. Va.). I believe one or more of his descendants migrated from the Essex, Caroline, King & Queen Co. area to the west, where my 5X Great-Grandfather, Joseph Roy (1) appears in the records as having died in 1798 in what is now Pendleton Co. WV. This is truly a brick wall and I would be so grateful for any help penetrating it! My brother recently had a Y-DNA test done and I'm counting on some clues there. Info on Hugh's descendants is plentiful for 3 generations: until mid-1700's, and what I'm looking for is a "Joseph Roy" who is connected to this line or any other line, for that matter! Right now, it seems he dropped from the sky onto Seneca Rocks! Thanks, all!

The section of this disc that indicates Wills and deeds are
primarily deed type material. How a property passed from hand to hand and nothing on the persons you seek,
I'm sorry.
I would suggest you try the Richmond Historical Society, they are very helpful.
Hello! I am wondering if you have any info on a a John Temple born about 1835, wife named Matilda, he was a teacher of some sort. In both the 1880 Census my ancestor's were living with him or on his property as servants. They were Temple White and Fannie White and their children. In 1870, he also had a Phoebe White living their as a servant. any info on any of these people would be appreciated.

Also if you could check for a Tazewell(or Tazwell) Jones, a white man - in Temple and Fannie's Marriage info, Fannies parents are listed as Tazewell Jones and Kiziah Neal. The only black Tazewell in the area is younger than Fannie. Their was only one white Tazewell. I found Kiziah in the 1870 Census last name still Neal. Fannie is living with a white family by the name of Mc Selland as a servant and is listed as a mulatto. I wonder if the White Tazewell Jones could have been her father? Any connection between him and the Neals or Mc Selland? Any will or deeds?

Thank you in advance for your time and generousity. rachelyancy@yahoo.com

Frances Martin ~ 1919

Please bear with me...
In August 1939 Frances Martin gave birth to a son. She named him Joseph John. Frances wasn't married at the time. At some point, Joe went to live as a foster child with Lewis and Mildred (Garnett) Seal. Over the first few years Frances visited Joe at the Seal's farm. On one such visit, Frances brought a bible to Joe. On the inside of the bible Frances wrote a note to her son. It said something like: To my son. Love your mother, Frances Martin. Family lore has it that Frances met a man and wanted to marry but the gentleman either didn't know about her son or didn't want to take her son or perhaps the foster family didn't want to let him go. However it happened, Joe stayed with the Seals and was adopted by them. To the best of his memory he never saw his mother again. Joe was roughly 5 years old when this happened. Fast forward 47 years and Joe is now my father-in-law who shares with me on Christmas that he's not only adopted but that he has a twin brother. The twin's name is the same as his, only transposed. John Joseph. John was placed in a different foster home and thereby adopted by a different family. The name of this family is not known to me. It is believed that John died in mid 1992 but without a last name I can't even begin to find him. Joe said he ran into him a few times growing up and after but he didn't share his brother's adopted last name. Joe died in April 1993. Fast forward to now. After years of searching and hunting I believe I have finally stumbled upon the family of Frances Martin, birth mother of Joe Seal. I have found the 1940 census with a Frances Martin age 20 living with her 8 month old son, Joseph J Martin at a home for indigent women and children. This home was located in Centreville, VA, Fairfax County. It lists Frances' home as King and Queen and that in 1935 that's where she had been living. It lists Joe as being 8 months old. The census was taken in April 1940. Joe was 8 months old in April 1940. It lists his place of birth as the District of Columbia, Washington. The name of the home was IVAKOTA FARM. I have looked into this place and it was not only a place for indigent women with children but unwed/expectant mothers. Because of the information from the 1940 census, and the little I was given years ago, I believe I finally found Joe - and with the age of Frances, I believe I have finally found the Martin family in King and Queen from which she came. But I'm not sure and have no way of confirming without the aid of someone in that family who might know the truth and be willing to help me. The Martin family in King and Queen that I believe is the biological line of my ex-husband, and thereby my children and grandchildren, is that of Thomas H and Molly Lou (Alexander) Martin. Frances was one of approximately 12 children. The younger children in the family might even still be alive today. I've found where Frances later married a man name Earl Norman. I have found cemetary records for a Frances L and Ernest E Norman in Culpeper, VA. Their SSDI show that Frances obtained her SS# in Fairfax (where IVAKOTA FARM was) and that Ernest E obtained his in Loudon. I have found an Ernest EARL Norman from Loudon and an Ernest Earl who joined the Army in 1941. He was discharged in 1945. Joe Martin turned 6 in 1945. If this Frances that was married to this Earl is Joe's mother, then I believe I have the right families.

Phew..... now, is there ANYONE out there who can help me with this? I have 3 children and 6 grandchildren who are biologically part of this/these family(ies) and I would really like to find their correct ancestors.

Thank you all for reading my LONG story. I pray someone can help me.

Not sure if I can access that, but I think these are a match. Josephine married a Thomas Wyatt and they had a son, William Wyatt who is my 2nd grandfather.

Joseph Allen and Elizabeth (Eliza) Carlton did have a daughter named Josephine as well as quite a few other children. They are a part of my family tree on Ancestry.com if you have access to that site.

I'm not sure if you will receive this message, but the name Joseph Allen has come up in my family search. I have his wife listed as Eliza(no last name) and a daughter named Josephine. Any connections?

Jennifer,
I have the Gaines family shown in this material, it speaks of a Robert Gaines.
This Harry is son of Henry and Elizabeth Herndon of "White House at Providence. Their children are: Benjamin, Harry, Robert Beverly, William Fleming, Martha Fleming, Elizabeth Herndon and John.
Robert of Belmont was married to Lucy, daughter of William Fleming Gaines of" Greenway" King William County.Their children were Sally, Herndon and Lucy all of whom died unmarried.
There is also mention of a Robert, brother of Harry Gaines of Providence, that was married to a Mrs. Jennings. They had children Richard who married Mary Ann, daughter of Benjamin Gaines and lived at "Plain Dealing", Harry who married Agnes Gwaltney; Martha married a Mr. Lee from Lychburg.
Hope this is helpful.
Elaine

The story goes that Harry Gaines a gent was engaged to build a church on a field belonging to Richard Corbin Esq. called "Goliath Field" on 2-27-1766. By 3-4-1768 the church was turned over to the Vestry and Harry was at that time deceased. On 10-3-1760 Harry was appointed trustee of the Pamunkey indians.
A second Harry, believed to be the above mentioned Harry's son, brother of William Fleming Gaines of Greenway in King William County and of Robert Gaines of "White House" King & Queen County, lived at "Providence and died in 1789.
