Hello. My name is William Gibbs and I am contacting you because My Heritage family tree indicates you maintain a Macallister Web Site and that web site, according to the my Heritage Family Tree, Has a listing for one Mathias Johnson Gibbs who was born in 1855 according to the information given.
My question to you is this; is the Mathias Johnson Gibbs mentioned in your web site the Mathias Johnson Gibbs who was born in Missouri in 1855 and who married a Delila Sargent in Virginia in 1875. If so I am rather curious as to whether you can provide me more information on that gentleman because he is my great grandfather and I have been attempting to prove conclusively who his mother and father are. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.
I thought maybe if I could find where they were buried maybe I would find where my great grandmother was buried. I think she died sometime in the 30's.

Hi Linda. There are not many Spurrier cemetery records in Lee Co., VA. I found only one buried 1935 -1949: Cecil Fry Cemetery, Pennington Gap, VA: Rebecca "Becky" Spurrier; Jan. 1877 - 1935; wife of EnosB. Spurrier. (He died in 1945). I do not need your postal mailing address. Ed. (Note: I ment 1935 to 1940, not 1949).

Cherokee Indians from the Osborn / Allen / Collins Family's of Lee County, Va, which was also using the "Melungian" cover story!

Cherokee Indians could not own property in the State of Georgia where Gold was found at the Cherokee Capital New Echota and this included the states of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, after 1840. Many stayed in the Smoky Mountains, rather than march the Trail of Tears to Indian Territory. Many Cherokees looked as white as anyone else, after 300 years of inter-marriage with whites.
Margaret ( Nee Hall ), Osborn was born in Cherokee Territory in 1799-1804. She married Andrew Jackson Osborn(e). This Osborn(e)family on census records in Lee County, VA. Children include Eliza, Martha, Margaret, Cynthia, Alfred and my GG-Grandfather Job(e). Margaret ( Nee Hall )Osborn(e) and children are listed this way. We believe that the Cherokee heritage was covered up all during the late 1800's, for obvious reasons.
When I was a child, my paternal g-mother Alene ( Nee Allen-Osborn ) Byington always said that her family are disenfranchised Cherokee's that remained behind from the Trail of Tears removal of the Cherokee Nation.

We've been told through oral tradition that many groups that walked to the Oklahoma Territories, had ran away from the U.S. Soldiers during the forced removal and that some groups were able to ( Pass as White )assimilate into the white population & and many hid in the Mountainous Ridges of Tenn, Kentucky, and Virginia to avoid removal during the Trail of Tears. It is historical fact that many Cherokees avoided capture and stayed in the Smokey Mountains. After word of the thousands dying on the Trail of Tears, many Cherokees, who were imprisoned in stockades scattered around Tennessee, while waiting to be started on the "death march", gave up small children to friendly whites settlers.

There are many Eastern Band Cherokee's listed on the Tribal Rolls with the Surnames of Osborn / Allen / Collins, and many Byingtons listed among Choctaw Tribal Rolls.

Could there be a Link to these Dis-enfranchised ( Native Americans ) Cherokee's wanting to stay in their ancestral homelands ( Of Lee County Virginia / Tennessee / Western N.C. and Kentucky by claiming themselves as non-Indians such as Melungeon's.

Only (1) one Cherokee was granted U.S. Citizenship and allowed to stay in North Carolina at the start of the Trail of Tears removal, about seven weeks into the journey, Junaluska deserted and led approximately 500 other Cherokee. He was soon captured and returned to Oklahoma but after only a couple of years, Junaluska made the trip back to North Carolina on foot, and in 1847 after a plea by Col. Thomas, the state legislature of North carolina rewarded him for his service by making him a citizen and awarding him and his band of Cherokee land near present-day Robbinsville, N.C.

Cherokee descendants in Lee County, Va early 1800's thru 2013? I say it's possible!

Please see my below request for any family information, of these Disenfranchised Cherokee's.

Please share any family history be it from Census Record / Family Bible / Property Land Deed / Church Record / of the following Lee County, Va Family's Surnames: ( Henry Joseph ) Allen family / ( Dorcas Adeline ) Collins family / ( Margarette )Hall family / ( Naoma Nayoma Naomi ) Osborn family / ( Alene )Byington-Boynton family.

Thanks for your info / assistance.
Cherokee Boynton.
I thought Charlotta Bausell Fletcher first married Samuel Carter. Have looked for years, and cannot find info. on his parents or where he came from..

They had one or two children and he died. The male child was named Drury Fletcher Carter (bn. about 1815). He married Isabella Tritt? Can't find her...some listings show Forth, Fitts, Fritz as last name. They had a number of children, one of them being Mary Carter, my gggrandmother. She married William Woodward (Woodard). These families (Carters and Parsons) had a close relationship. I grew up in that area of Va. so I am familiar with the families.

Please let me know if you have different info.

After Samuel Carter died, Charlotta married Samuel Parsons, and had a number of children.

Have you tried to get a copy of Sam's death certificate?
If the informant knew Sam's parents' names, he/she would have listed them on it. You can obtain a copy through Virginia Department of Health, vital records. If you google it, the site should come up. I have listed for his death date May 28, 1946.
Have you tried searching from the other side of the ocean?
I found (on Ancestry) where Sam and his brother came in on same ship "Batavia" from Hamburg, Germany, departure date: 29 Mar 1907. Arrived in NY., 14 April 1907. Anna apparently came in 1909 with daughter - I didn't look up her ship etc. Sam's Naturalzation papers from 31 Mar 1920, gives the immigration date as/about 26 Feb. 1906 - NY from Hamburg and can't make out the name of the ship. You can find the record on Ancestry if you don't have it.
Good luck - Regina

Looking for any information on Millard Carroll, born about 1903, son of David Orr Carroll, and Lucreta (Lucy) Parsons Gilbert Carroll. Millard's brother was Clyde Carroll, sometimes called Tyde or Tide.
Would like to know what happened to Lucy - since David Orr Carroll remarried to Alabama Stapleton in 1910.

Wondering where Millard is buried, if there is any obituary. On the 1940 census he is shown in nearby Harlan, Kentucky, as a store owner. Would like to know anything about that.

Haven't been able to find Millard Carroll in the 1910 census, he should be seven years old or so, but maybe living with his mother or other relatives? Haven't found him in the 1920 census either, but in 1923, he was a miner, age 20.

Millard Carroll had a child with someone in Dec. 1923, did not marry her (according to the birth certificate of the child born in Jonesville, VA), and then shortly after, married and had more children with his first wife.

Thanks for any help or suggestions you could offer,
Taryn

Re: Lee Co VA 1835 property tax list

Does anyone know if these records have been transcribed completely?

I am at a dead end on my g-g-grandfather, Richard Barnes, born about 1815 in NC. My first documentation of him is in the 1850 Claiborne, TN census along with his wife, Elizabeth. I think he may have 2 to 4 brothers (John, William, Robert, and Joseph) who were born in VA 1820-1830. This along with other clues make me think that he may have lived in Lee County before moving to TN.

In the 1835 Tax list I have found a Richard Barnes, 1 white male over 16. He would have been about 20. I also found William Barnes, 1 white male over 16. If this were his father (or the father of the other 4) all of the sons would be under 16.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

p_e_barnes@yahoo.com

Mary Polly Waite was married to Henry Peters in Scott County VA. they had a number of children including a daughter named Mary Peters who was my great great great grandmother. One researcher finds that Mary was married to a Charles Peters. and the 1850 Census shows Wesley Cook as being in the Household of Mary Peters in Clay County KY.
