Elisha Powell, Jr. was the son of Elisha Powell (1739-1796), who was born in Stafford Co., Va., but later moved to Loudoun Co., Va. The senior Elisha married Winifred Massey (1735-bef.1796) of Stafford Co. on 20 Dec. 1761 in Stafford Co. She was the daughter of Robert Massey (ca. 1706-d. aft. 1742). Robert Massey was a lineal descendant of Robert Beheathland, who accompanied Capt. John Smith on the first English voyage to Jamestown in 1607.
