Shaffer/Shepherd - name change?

Classification: Query
Surnames: Shepherd, Shafer, Shaffer
Does anyone know antything about the origins ( place of birth) or who the parents of Lawrence Shepherd were? He was born abt. 1737 (birthplace unknown), lived in Loudoun County until the late 1700's when he moved to Fluvanna Co. VA where he was married to Anna Brown of Fluvanna. He and all but one of his sons, Abraham Shepherd, from whom I am descended, eventually migrated to Ross Co. Ohio in 1809. I have no written information to support it, but my grandmother always said that the name Shepherd was anglicized from the German surname Shafer or Shaffer. I know that many people of German descent settled in Loudoun County. Lawrence and his sons moved to Ross County Ohio apparently to take advantage of Revolutionary War land grants in the Virginia Military District - so Lawrence and/or his sons must have served in the Revolution. I have many tantalizing clues, but nothing concrete! Can anyone help?
