I Transcribed an Early Religious Petition, Lunenburg Co., Va, 9 Nov 1785, Many Names
I ran across these early religious petitions in Lunenburg County, Virginia. These are original signatures and I had difficulty reading a lot of them. I put a question mark besides those names and/ or initials of which I was not sure. If anyone believes they know what a surname should be, I will be glad to check the original to determine if that indeed is the correct name and change the petition below. The petition used a lot of capital letters, so I capitalized where they did. I was hunting for Laffoon signatures and did find several of the petitions they had signed. I am transcribing the ones that were signed by the Laffoons and will post them as I get them transcribed (to the best of my ability - the names are so hard to read!)

Here is the first:

Early Religious Petitions (obtained from the Library of Congress, American Memory)

Abstracted by LaVelda Faull
9 Nov 1785, Lunenburg County, Virginia
“To the honorable the General Assembly of Virginia, the Petition of sundry free Inhabitants of the County of Lunenburg humbly sheweth,
That whereas the General Assembly at their Session in October last, out of a pious Regard for the Advancement of Christianity in this State did adopt A Bill for establishing a Provision for the Teachers of the Christian Religion on a Plan founded in equal Justice to the Citizens in general who owe this respective Aids to the Peace & Prosperity of civil Government; and on Principles so Liberal & impartial, as to proclude the remotest Jealousy of Preference to any Denomination of Christians; and whereas they directed the same to be printed and Copies thereof to be dispersed through the several Counties in Order to collect the Sentiment of the People on this very important Subject. Your Petitioners impressed with the sincerest Sentiments of Veneration & Gratitude towards the Legislature, who have thus, under the Divine Influence, manifested so laudable a Disposition to patronize and protect the Concerns of our holy Religion; the Knowledge & Practice of which have such a manifest Tendency to promote the Peace & Prosperity of Civil Government; beg leave to assure you of our high Approbation of the said Bill, humbly praying that the same may be passed into a Law.
And your Petitioners shall ever pray & c.”
Thos Buford
Wm P----(?)
Landon Bell shows 3 John Halls in a list of Colonial soldiers in Lunenburg, Co. in his book "The Old Free State". #1 John was just above Thomas Hall in the list. #2 John, Hezekiah, & Aquilla were together in a list. #3. John and Robert Hall were in line together.
I would be interested in any of these John Halls, to know of their children, wife, etc. Thanks in advance, Grace Hall Upshaw

I have found several documents naming Julius Nichols in early Lunenburg County (1745 - 1750's). I believe he was the Sheriff of that county for a number of years prior to moving to NC. I would like to find out more about him, particularly his family while in Lunenburg Co. I think his father and/or brother lived there as well and would like to make that connection.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Steve

Seeking further information on HOODs in Lunenburg County, Virginia in the late 1700s-early 1800s.

William HOOD, Jr.'s will written 1821 (probate 1823) mentioned wife Martha HOOD; sons Jesse, Richard, Joel, William, Joshua; daughters Martha HOOD, Susannah BATES, Nancy LANDRUM; granddaughters Martha HOOD & Frances Anne HOOD.

Susannah HOOD BATES married David BATES of Amelia County, Virginia. She was widowed by the time her father died (David died in 1818) and she herself died the same year his will was in probated. Commissioners were appointed to sell the dower lands of Susannah BATES, deceased, in October 1823.

I'm trying to find out the children of Susannah's brothers and sisters. I know that one of Susannah's daughters, Rebecca, married her cousin, John Robert HOOD.

I am researching the SMITHSON family of Lunenburg County. I descend from James (born 1791, son of Francis) through his son William (born 1/24/1824) and William's wife Jane CAMPBELL SMITHSON. Jane took her family to Christian Co, Ky after William's death in the Civil War. Any information or others working on this family?
Also - I have an obituary notation that before leaving Virginia, Jane Campbell Smithson was a member of "the Presbyterian church at Old Bethel." Is anyone familiar with this church, or know if it still exists?
Any replies appreciated!!

Second Early Religious Petition Transcription, 6 Nov 1786, Lunenburg Co., VA

Here is another transcription of an early religious petition from Lunenburg County, Virginia, this one for 6 Nov 1786.

Early Religious Petitions (obtained from the Library of Congress, American Memory) Abstracted by LaVelda Faull
(These are original signatures and I had extreme difficulty reading a lot of them on this document. I put a question mark besides those names and/ or initials of which I was not sure. If anyone believes they know what a surname should be, I will be glad to check the original to determine if that indeed is the correct name and change the petition below.)

6 Nov 1786 Lunenburg County, Virginia
To the honorable the Speakers and other members of the General Assembly the Petition of the Church wardens & Vestry and other Members of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the County of Lunenburg dutifully(?) presents(?)
That your Petitioners have Reason to apprehend that at your ensuing Session an attempt will be made to prevail with the General Assembly to repeal the Law for incorporating the said Church. And although no Change of Circumstances has intervened to require the Repeal of an Act which was judged necessary when passed.; yet lest the Silence of the Members of the said Church amidst the various and zealous attacks with which she is threatened, may by any means operate to her Prejudice, your Petitioners think it proper to request that they may not be deprived of those Conveniences which the said Act procures to them. Some have affected to consider the Act here referred to, if not as an Establishment, yet at least as tending to an Establishment of the Episcopal Church and strange(strong?) Fears have been excited for the Safety and Independence of the other Christian Churches without her Pale. But these Fears must appear to be groundless when it is considered that the Members of the said Church wish to see the other Protestant Churches enjoy the Benefits arising from being incorporated.
---Your Petitioners declare with the greatest Sincerity that however their Opinion of the Purity and Excellence of their own church must naturally give them a Degree of Zeal for its Support; yet that Zeal is not embittered with any Rancour against their Protestant Brethren of other Denominations. Nor do they wish to possess any Authority or Domination over them. --- Thus affected towards them, your Petitioners hope for a Return of equal benevolence and Christian Forbearance; and thus by a continual Interchange of brotherly Love and friendly Offices render quite unimportant all the little Differences of Opinion which may still keep them separate ---but if contrary to this Hope, Your Petitioners should meet with Opposition from those who wish to see any Act repealed which is judged convenient for the good Government of the Episcopal Church, and which can affect the Rights of no other, they leave it to the World to determine what church it is, which has most Reason to dread a tyrannous Exertion of Power & a Suppression of its dearest Interests. ----Your Petitioners therefore humbly pray that any such unreasonable Interference may be rejected.
Thos.
Thomas Jefferson Goode Bible or Will needed

Thomas Jefferson Goode (b.1759/60 Lunenburg Co. VA - d. 1846 Tipton Co TN) at age of 17 in 1776 enlisted in the Virginia Continental Line. was in the Revolution. He married in Spotsylvania VA, 1779, to Sarah Hawkins (b 1763- d 1846)I am looking for a Bible that he once had, or a copy of a will that lists son Hezekiah Goode as a child (b 1799 Rutherford NC, d 1881 Texas). Children of Thomas were:Lucinda Pritzer; Sarah; Nancy Clark; Elizabeth Herring; Hezekiah married a Knox; Maranda Greer; Addilisa Clifton; Edward (d AL); Judith Lyles(d. TN) ; Jane Walton; Joseph (d. TN); Betsy Herring; Mary Polly Bobo; Thomas Jr; John (d. KY) married a Clark.
I don't have dates or married names for many. But I do know many of the children's children came to DeWitt Co, Colorado Co, or Lavaca Co. Texas to live/die.
I am not sure of the accuracy of some of this data, but it is the best I have.
Hezekiah Goode was born in Rutherford, Polk Co., NC. When he was young his parents (Thomas and Sarah) moved to Christian Co. Kentucky. One source says 1800-1820 they were living in NC, another says Hezekiah moved to Alabama with his parents when he was 20. (Hmmm Take your pick!) Thomas Jefferson Goode Sr died in TN. A will most likely would be in Tipton Co. TN, where he is said to have died Dec 20, 1846. A will could have been probated in 1847 or any year following. A bible, however could have gone with any of the children, ending up in NC, VA, KY, AL or TX. I hope someone recognizes one of these names.
Hezekiah had 12 children, 3 wives. If all children had that many kids, there is no telling what family would have the bible! We can't even find a grave for Hezekiah, much less a will. He was living with his daughter Mary Northington in Bell Co. Texas when he died. So if there is a Northington that reads this, please contact me! Thanks.
New website for Bakers with Virginia origins

The Pamunkey Bakers Association -- an informal group of any and all descendants of Thomas and Dorothy Davenport Baker of Colonial Virginia -- is proud to announce the launch of our new website:

http://www.pamunkeybakers.com

Complete with message board (requires registration), photo gallery (where folks can upload photographs, documents and records relating to the Pamunkey Bakers - also requires registration), research reports and a full database of Baker-Davenport descendants (corrections welcome!), the website offers a focus for research into the origins and scope of our branch of the Baker family.

Association members lay claim to being Pamunkey Bakers through the marriage of Thomas Baker (c1711-c1777) to Dorothy Davenport (1716-c1790), whose grandfather Davis Davenport is well-documented as an early landowner in the Pamunkey Neck region of Virginia. Davis Davenport's lands adjoined those of an earlier Thomas Baker, and discovering whether and how that earlier Thomas is linked to our Thomas -- as grandfather, grand-uncle or other relative, perhaps -- is one of the purposes of the website.

The website also hopes to trace our Baker family as it grew and spread out -- through Virginia, in Caroline, Spotsylvania, Orange, Culpeper, Botetourt and Montgomery Counties, among others; into North Carolina, in Burke, Wilkes, Buncombe, and Yancey Counties, among others; into South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama; and west into Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado and more. So we particularly welcome all Bakers with Virginia roots, and hope you'll look to see if perhaps you connect to us (DNA testing is a great research tool!). Anyone out there descended from Josiah or Thomas Baker, who held land patents in the Lunenburg area?

Come visit, sit a spell, share a story, post a query, add your branch to the family tree.

James Waller, 1733, Lunenburg County, Virginia

We descend from James Waller, born about 1733, in Lunenburg County, Virginia. His first wife is unknown. James could have married about 1774. His second marriage was to Sarah Mathews, they were married on 22 January 1787, in Lunenburg County.

James and 1st wife's other children were: Nelson; Susanna; Martha (Patty); Rice; Sterling; Rebecca; Mary; James; Robert

We descend through James Waller's son Benjamin Waller, born about 1757, in Lunenburg County. We only know that he married Martha (?). Their marriage could have taken place, about 1884, in Virginia.

Benjamin Waller's son, we only know by "Son"....We don't know if that was his real name or not, he was born about 1786,in Lunenburg County, Virginia.

Benjamin's other children: Mary (Polly); Nancy; William; Martha (Patsey); Benjamin Philip

We have no idea who Son Waller married, which was probably about 1805, in Lunenburg County. We descend from Son Waller's son Edward, born about 1806, probably in Lunenburg.

I hope there our some Waller cousins, who can fill in some blanks in our history. We like to know the name of James Waller's first wife and when their marriage took place. As well as, their son Benjamin's wife Martha's full name and when their marriage took place. Also, we would like to know if Son Waller is his real name, as well as, the name of his bride and when they got married.

We are wondering if there are church records from Lunenburg County, Virginia from the 1700s, which have marriage, baptismal and burial records.

A pipe dream would be to learn who James Waller parents were. Did church records go back to 1700 and were there any 1740 Lunenburg County, Censuses?

We would love to get to meet some new Waller cousins....

I want to thank my new Waller cousins for their research of our Waller line....
We invite all interested OLIVER researchers to visit the site and hopefully make a connection and share that connection with us.

Many thanks for your help, Frank
Hello All,

I am looking for any information on the family of the John OLIVER who appears in the 1810 Nottoway County, VA census with the following family: 3 males under 10, 1 male 26-44, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-44. He then apparently moved to Lunenburg County, VA because there is a John OLIVER who appears in that county’s 1820 census with the following family: 3 males 10-15, 1 male 26-44, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44. This John cannot be found in the 1830 censuses, but then there is a John OLIVER who appears back in Nottoway County, VA in the 1840 census with the following family: 1 male 50-59, 1 female 50-59.

If these are all the same John OLIVER, he would have born sometime between 1780 and 1784 and would have at least 3 sons and 2 daughters.. Is anyone researching or have any information on this family? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Frank
Looking for any information on John Russell (probably b. 1780-1790) who may be the father of James B. Russell (b. ca 1806, VA). James B (Burton?) Russell married Sarah D (Dodson?)Garrett (b. 25 Oct 1805, VA), d/o James Garrett and Nancy Rudder. They actually wed in Williamson County, TN but believe both families are from Lunenburg County, VA. In 1810, there are Philip, Sarah, William, and John Russell in Lunenburg County. In 1820, I note there are John, Philip, and Sally Russell in Lunenburg County. In 1830, John, Jeremiah, Elijah, Benjamen, James, and Elam Russell are in Williamson County, TN. Not sure how many of these were from Virginia. By 1840, James had moved to Hinds County, MS, leaving Matthew, John, Henry, George, Elijah, and Benjamin in Williamson County, TN.

James and Sarah had children Elijah Jefferson, William R, Nancy L, Pleasant G, Benjamin F, Mary E, and Augustus D.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

I just found out the name of my ancestor Benjamin Waller's father, which was James Waller, born about 1733 and d. about 1788, in Lunenburg County. I don't know the name of James Waller's first wife, but his second wife's name was Sarah Mathews. They were married 22 Jan 1787, in Lunenburg County.

James Waller's children by first wife:

Nelson, b. abt. 1755
Benjamin, b. abt 1757
Susanna, b. abt. 1758
Martha (Patty), b. abt. 1760
Rice, b. abt. 1762
Sterling, b. abt. 1764
Mary, b. abt. 1767
James, b. abt. 1772
Robert, b. abt. 1773

I would appreciate any records concerning the Waller family. I especially would like to know the name of James Waller's first wife. I descend from Benjamin Waller, so it would be a miracle if we could learn the last name of his wife Martha and to find his baptismal record.

I am in no hurry and if by chance you could find any information on this James Waller family it would be a miracle....If you can only look up one thing that is okay.

I am hoping that someone has CD or books on early Lunenburg County marriages.

Thank you for your time....

My family history says they had 2 sons, William and Joel, and a daughter Nancy(?) who married a Richard Burnes. It also describes the terms of Joseph's will. However, since others have different information, I'm looking for positive proof of some sort, a copy of the will or a census, e.g.

Darrol DeLong
Carlisle, MA

Jeremiah Claunch with George Mack in his household is on 1747-1752 Lunenburg Co., VA tax lists. Does anyone out there have his children and descendants. I am descended from his son, Hans Micale/John Michael Glantz who moved to Mecklenburg Co., NC before 1768 when he received a land grant. This John Michael Glantz (now Clontz) d before March 9, 1807 in NC. All these spellings are used in the deed where John Michael's widow sold his Anson Co., NC land to Jeremiah Glantz/Clontz, his son, Mecklenburg Co., NC court record of March 9, 1807. Will be happy to share research. I am a direct descendant of John Michael and his son, Jeremiah Glantz/Clontz.

dotwhite@comcast.net

I am looking for the birth family of John A. SMITH who married Sarah Ann RICHARDSON on September 1, 1818 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. She was the daughter of John R. RICHARDSON and Elizabeth GUNN. He died in Greene County, Alabama before July 27, 1840. Their children were James Daniel SMITH, Mary Elizabeth SMITH, Joseph Grief SMITH, Sarah Ann and Camilla Nicholas SMITH, and Sinthy SMITH. His siblings may have included James SMITH, Elam SMITH, William SMITH, Leethe WOODARD, Lucy GREENE, and Penny ATKINSON. I would appreciate any help in sorting out all of the SMITHs in Lunenburg County during the early 1800s.

I am interested in a John Lester, son of Bryan Lester, born in Lunenburg County, Virginia abt. 1751/52. He had brothers Alexander Abner and Samuel. It is interesting that John Lester of Montgomery County Va reported to have been born in Pennsylvania also had brothers Abner and Samuel who lived in the Montgomery County area before moving to points west and south. The name Hulen is given family menbers of both lines: John Lester named son Hulen, and in BRyan, Alexander Lester's line there was Abner Hulen Lester. This flags me that there was a connection. Where was Bryan Lester born? Did he move to Lunenburn from PA?

Hi,
Amy Gee, the daughter of Neavil Gee, married a Andrews, probably Varney Andrews. Neavil Gee in his will (Lunenburg Co., Va Will Book 5, pages 87A-89, dated 19 Jun 1804) named his daughter Amy Andrews. Has any one seen a marriage bond or church record for Amy Gee? Her marriage should have been around 1781.
I am also searching for the parents and sibling of this Neavil Gee. Charles Gee in his will (Sussex Co., Va., dated 4 Jan 1768, (does anyone know the book number and page of this will) names a son Nevel Gee as well as eight other children. I think this Nevel/Nevil Gee named in this will is probably the Neaval Gee whose will is dated 19 Jun 1804.
I would appreciate any comment or help connecting these Gee and/or Andrews families.
Reginald L. Apparently he took several of their children with him. Somewhere between 1796 and 1799 there was a divorce. Obedience is said to have died in Lunenburg Co, VA. Need info on Obedience's divorce from James Martin and her marriage to William Newsome. Also need to confirm her death in Lunenburg Co., in 1824.

They moved on to Williamson Co TN after that where they remained until their deaths in 1866 and 1873. Does anyone know anything about ANY of these people?? I have been unable to link Wm W Jarrett to any of the Jarrett lines in this area. Thanks very much for any help.

Mason & Harvey Families of Early Lunenburg Co.

My gggg-grandfather, John Mason was listed on the 1790 census of Spartanburg Co., SC. Robert Mason was listed on the 1800 census of Greenville Co., SC. I have reasons to believe that they were brothers, or maybe 1st cousins. Robert is believed to have been one of the sons of Nathaniel Mason of Lunenburg Co., VA (d. abt. 1785). His will listed sons William, Christopher, Thomas, Nathan, & Robert. Robert, William, & Christopher were executors of Nathaniel's estate, & it is believed that Nathan was too young to have been one of the executors. Since Thomas was not listed as an executor, it is believed that he was no longer in the Lunenburg area.

William Mason, who was either Robert's son or brother (I believe he was Robert's brother) married Hannah Caroline Hudson, daughter of Abraham Hudson, & since there was a definite familial relationship between the Hudson family & Mason family of Lunenburg Co., I'm interested in knowing if there was any relationship between John Hudson of Lunenburg Co., & Abraham Hudson of Greenville Co., SC.

If anyone has any information concerning either of these families, or if anyone knows anything that might point to the parentage of John Mason, my gggg-grandfather, I would really appreciate it if you would contact me. Feel free to email me at barber99@hotmail.com. I will be happy to share any information that I might have. Thanks.

I am looking for marriage record of Thomas C. Fletcher. Born in about 1763, He bought 100 acres land from Micajah Via in 1799 which was located in Halifax County. He is listed there on the 1810,1820,1830 census' and claimed on his revolutionary pension statement that he owned the 100 acres. His widow stated that he had spent 27 years at Halifax previously of Lunenburg. I suspect they married at Lunenburg.
The bible record of his son states the wifes maiden surname as "Pollard".
Any help of finding the surname Fletcher at Lunenburg between 1760 and 1800 would be greatly appreciated.
Nadine Christall

Currently my story ends in LUNENBURG CO. VA. your county. A fourth removed Grandfather, per his revolutionary war ension application file gives this as his home. His name was James Ritchie. He married a woman by the first name of Martha (last name not given). They were married by a "Parson" James Craig, at his residence in Lunenburg county. The Date given was June 20, 1774. I would still consider this aprox.
although it was clearly stated. I have also found other records using the name parson James craig form this county. He may have been Presbyteryian. They stated they
published a ban of marriage and no other legal record existed when trying to prove their marriage. I also have shown James on a list of titheables in the year 1774 listed
in a book calles Sunlight on the Southside, living with what I assume to be his father John Ritchie. I have no further records for John. James was born in 1754. I am not
sure what county. I also have to search for Jame's eldest son, David Ritchie..(spellings vary from..Richey,Richtey, Ritchie..etc) David Ritchie married a Hanna Engram, in Lunenburg County oct 10, 1803. If there is even a remote chance that you may be able to help me locate any tidbit or record on my family it would be very much appreciated. If you have any questions or successes, please feel free to
contact me at: randal.richey@airliance.com. I would be interested in any entry baptism, christening, death, marriage, birth, etc.. concerning this family name or the
names of John, James, David, or Daniel....Ritchey.
