Thank you for the response. Yes, I've been in touch with James Wesley Gwynn III and we do have that common ancestor.
Samuel Peter "Pete"/"Pink" Gwynn was my late father George's
grand uncle. His grandfather was James Gwynn, Jr, who was married to Mariah and helped to raise my father's 2 sisters, Fadonia and Naomi, when their mom, Effie died. My Aunt Naomi is still alive and well and lives in CA. She published her 1st book of poetry only a few years ago. She turned 89 in March of this year. We're trying to wrap up details of the Howard=Gwynn reunion, this July, in Williamsburg, Va. This reunion happens every other year. Take care and when you get a moment, send me an email at doris54walk@aim.com. I read the threads regarding the King family. Maureen has unearthed an awful lot of info for you. She's a great person to share her time and resources like that.

Hi Doris,
In response to your post I received a E from a James Gwynn III. (unitedsheepofamerican@gmail.com) who stated that his ggggrandfather was James Gwynn Sr. (born 1835). Samuel Peter Gwynn and Matilda King were married. (I am of the King ancestry). I do know that there is a James Gwynn married to a Edith Blackwell who is in this family. I have been quite busy with getting ready for a Harrelson Celebration in Columbus, Ohio in August. I will try and take some time and look over the many papers that I have. I will keep in touch. My E-address is: annjuar@aol.com.
Have a bless day. Anna

Absolutely loved reading about your background. Finding out that you're an RN doesn't surprise me. My sister is an RN in the DC/MD area. My Aunt Fadonia Gwynn Watlington was an RN. My Aunt Emma Slade Howard was an RN. You all have very nurturing spirits, kind hearts and no question, love to help people. Hats off to nurses, firefighters and teachers! Always underpaid and under-appreciated!

Awww, thanks! Expertise??!! LOL.

My four grandparents are from Ireland. Kinda weird but I'm considered an expert in Irish research. So anyhow I got hired by a professional (?) genealogy company to do that. My first case was a disaster--no way could the client get info he wanted. (He's spent over $10,000 with 2 other groups with no results.) Then he tried me. Basically, he wanted something a kin to finding a birth record for one of your people from 1750.

The British ruled Ireland, and that's why we have all these wars with them, and tried to remove all things Irish from our culture. Our religion & language was banned. We called it the Penal Laws. We had something very similare in Northern Ireland to the Jim Crow laws. Until the late 1970s we could have jobs as Police, Firemen, etc....Finally they had enough of our IRA retaliations (bombs, murders) and gave us rights. The Irish were forbidden to record birth, marriages and deaths until 1864. We did have some clandestine church records but they were mostly burned in the 1922 Civil War. So this man was looking for something that couldn't exist. (And my Irish boss thought I was stupid--not happy with me.) And why am I going on?

While I was waiting for the Ireland project to get the green light, a second cousin of Rosa Parks contacted our company. She needed pro bono help on her dad's side. The women I work with spent all their time proving she wasn't Rosa's cousins. Beats me why. (One is absolutely A-American.) There are enough family trees for her that it took me less than an hour to review all the important documents and she is ABSOLUTELY her second cousin. I mean what if she wasn't? It makes her happy to think she is. She wan't asking for help on that line. (I am an RN in trauma/burns and a Chef who now feeds the needy of NYC. I'm so not used to working with petty mean woman!!LOL)

I asked the client if I could look into her mom's side. She was thrilled. She was so happy with my initial work and since the second contact has not responded to emails. I'm worried that she will think she needs to pay me. I have a history degree (Asian/Russian) and was just fascinated by the African American history in Caswell Co. Many, many, many people have applied for DAR-Daughter's of the American Revolution...but there is very little written about the other significant segment of the population--Slaves. I was just blown away by this--ok maybe I shouldn't be.

Anyhow, when I research my families history (boring farmers) I like to understand what was happening historically. I hope to get her tree up on-line because I found really interesting photos that relate to life in that area and near-by Virginia. They aren't her family but its interesting to see people in their everyday life. (Mostly I can help others researching African American lineage. There doesn't seem to be Native Americans there.) So far, out of the 700 people I have in her tree, only Willis and Gertrude/Gertie Gwynn appear in her line.

Man I need to stop writing...after the Civil War the government conducted a Census in the Slave holding states--don't know reason why but NC doesn't have one (not sure if it was done or lost/destroyed). But if you have people in other States look for Census of 1866.

Cheers and thanks for kind words! Let me know if I can help you. Mo

Hi Maureen: I went back to re-read all the posts about Kings and Gwynns and there was so much info you provided on both. I also looked at the link you shared on CCHA and Gwynn photos on line. My Aunt Fadonia and Uncle Joseph are included, as are my great grandparents James "Jim, Jr and Mariah Gwynn. My Aunts Naomi & Fadonia, who you'll find in Jim and Mariah's household on the 1930 census, lived with them after the death of their mom, Effie Badgett Gwynn in 1924. She'd just given birth to twins Naomi and Ruth months before. My father George and his sister Annie were the first set of twins. My Aunt Naomi is still alive, well and published her fist book of poetry in 2011 called "The Touch". Naturally, she has a wealth of info and was my motivation for beginning this "family hunt". Thank you for your expertise, your time and sharing. Folks in the genealogy community are so unselfish, very giving and always willing to help.

I began doing research in Caswell (for someone) a few months ago. I have been looking at Probates on the LDS site to find possible links to African Americans. That's been my best way to find people.

There is a Caswell Genealogy page. They have a Flicker photo site. Caswell Co has a lot of information on-line. Here's the Gwynn pictures.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ncccha/sets/72157602281090047/

Another research tip I can add is that Caswell births are often registered in Catawba. Marriages frequently take place in Danville, Virginia--right on the border of Caswell co. ('My people' are from Yanceyville.)

Rockland Co, New York had a major brick-making industry until 1941. Surprisingly, many people from Caswell migrated there to work. I made a trip up there 2 weeks ago--interesting in a nerdy way!! LOL. I hope to put the tree I created up soon.

Maureen

I used to spend summers in Mobjack in the 50s at the home of my grandmother, Eva White Machen, who lived catty-corner across the road from Coles and Mary Hudgins' place, on a point in Mobjack directly across the road from Grace Methodist church. I have quite vivid memories of Cap'n George Philpotts, who was Mary Hudgins' father, sipping iced tea at Sunday School picnics on the vast Hudgins lawn. Philpotts Wharf, referred to in another post, was the "downtown" (the use of the term is almost laughable) wharf of Mobjack, where we kids would watch oyster boats unload -- or jump off their high decks into the water on a dare. Alas, the wharf (and pretty much all of "old Mobjack") is gone now. Time and waterside development have homogenized the area so that it looks not at all like the Mobjack I remember.

They have a son Duncan Bohannon Jr born 1660-70 in MD or VA and he died in 1753-54 in Orange Co, VA. He married a Sarah (Elliot)? and had a son William Bohannon. ...he having a son naming him Duncan, as well. You tell a great story..I don't know any stories..just that these wonderful names created the Moore family, which met up with the Knight family, creating this beautiful being they named Cleo Salley Mae Knight, whom was my mother.

Brownley, William Marshall

A lot of information has been published about William Marshall Brownley (1803 - 1867). I understand several William M. Brownley's lived in Mathews at different times, however; I find several possible data conflicts with the above referneced Wm. M.

The Bromley-Brownley family Bible record, 1801-1975 at the Library of Virginia and Genealogies of Virginia Families lists William M Brownley as a son of John and Sarah Brownley. (maiden name unknown)

A newspaper obituary lists "William M Brownley (white) died Dec 18, 1867, 62 yr, son of John and Sally Brownley; Husband of Lucy Brownley. Born and died in Mathews.";

William's mother's name is listed as Sarah in the first two sources and as Sally in his obituary. Could this just be a typographical error?

Further the referenced to "A Familiy History Write-up found in the Brownley Bible by Eva Augusta Trower" contains a list of William's siblings: John 1801-1867, William Marshall 1803-1867, Sarah 1803, Milton Lafayette 1807, Rose Marshall 1809, LeVisa 1810, Dorathea 1812.

I have found obituaries (see my other post "Brownley Horn Harbour") that list other siblings to William M. Brownley ie: Leroy M Brownley 1828-1848. It is possbile that Leroy M, Robert W and Larkin C Brownley are half brothers.

Does anyone have any additional sources or information concerning Eva Augusta Trower referenced in the bible?

I would greatly appreciate collaboration from anyone with additional information.
I'm a decendant of Rev John Brownley (c 1861 - 1833) and his wife Johanna Armistead (c.1975-1854) who lived in Mathews County Virginia on Horn Harbour. Their property is shown on a very nice survey plat dated 1835 No. 259 found on page 151 of Mathews County Plat Book 1. The plat shows an illustration of the house and windmill along Horn Harbour. The land was divided by a decree of the County Court in November 1834 following the death of John. The plat lists the following names of ownership: Johanna Brownley, widow; Robert W, Leroy McK & Larkin C. Brownley; William M Brownley, Rosey Hayes and the orphans of Milton Brownley. Adjacent property owners listed are John Foster, Joel Hudgins, Jno. Brownley, Sands Smith, James Brownley &, William Minter

I've been trying to find additional records of Rev John Brownley to determine the relationship to the above people and his parents names. I'm reviewing available Land Tax Records, Federal Census and newspapers. Here are several related facts found:

"Died in Mathews Co., on Saturday, February 2, 1833, Rev. John Brownley, an elder in the Methodist Church, age about 72, leaves wife and six (6) children. American Beacon. Pub: Thursday, March 7, 1833.";

"Died, of congestive fever, the 23rd ultimo, at the residence of Brother John Forrest, in the county of Mathews, LEROY M. BROWNLEY, in the 20th year of his age, son of the Rev. John Brownley, dec'd. He embraced religion several years ago in Portsmouth. Brother of the Rev. Wm. M. Brownley, the deceased leaves behind an affectionate mother, one sister and four brothers. The funeral service was by the Rev. Wm. A. Billups.

"William M Brownley (white) died Dec 18, 1867, 62 yr, son of John and Sally Brownley; Husband of Lucy Brownley. Born and died in Mathews.";

"Brownley, Robert W., (wh), age 65 years, died August, 1891; cause: dysentery. Parents: unknown. Occupation: fisherman. Source of info: J. W. Burroughs, friend.";

"Brownley, Larkin C, b. 27 July 1830 d 17 Dec 1917 ship carpenter, source: Baltimore, Maryland death certificate No. D-10198";

"Brownley, Mary F age 21 b. c 1828-9 source 1850 Federal Census Mathews County p 1 - possible daughter or daughter in law of Rev. John Brownley?"

Based on the 1833 obituary above "leaves ... six children" Another child was living. I do not know the name of this additional child. Possibly another son based on the 1848 obituary of Leroy M Brownley " leaves... one sister and four brothers".

It appears that Rev. John Brownley may have been married to Sally (William M.'s mother) prior closer to 1800 and later married to Johanna Armistead before 1827.

I would greatly appreciate collaboration from anyone with additional information.

Thank you for your response. One thing that I am curious about is the possible relationship between Jesse Thomas and James Warner Thomas (immigrant from Wales late 1820's or early 1830's). Below is a link to a document that contains some research that was done on the Barneck/Thomas Place, that was built by James Warner Thomas in 1834. There is a deed showing that Jesse's wife Matilda and children received a part of the land that James Thomas built the Barneck house on. It appears that there must be a relationship between Jesse and James Thomas, in order for Jesse's family to be deeded part of the Barneck land.

http://matthewkimball.net/pedigree/Robert_Matthew_Thomas.pdf

Thank you so much, this is what I believe to be correct. I am still searching for a document, stating that William Morgan 1762-1840, is indeed William James Morgan's 1809-1862 father. Have not found that just yet. I have seen some family trees with Anne Forrest as William Morgan's wife, but still no documentation. The search is on. Thank you again. If you come across something, I would be very interested to see it. Carole.
I cannot find the documentation to link them, they are my 3rd, 4th, and 5th Great Grand Fathers. William James Morgan 1809-1862, was married to Elizabeth Anne Foster, 1819-1880, and William Morgan 1762-1840 was married to Anne Forrest, so I believe. The only other link I have, could be James Morgan 1755, brother to William Morgan 1762-1840, but I can not find a record of James and Elizabeth baptizing a child named James. James and Elizabeth recorded their children's baptisms in the Kingston Parish records.

My father, George, left Caswell County around 1939 & married my mother, Catherine Howard, also from Caswell, in 1940. I've found them in Newport News, VA in the 1940 census. His parents, grandparents and great-grands never moved around too much. From the Locust Hill community, his relatives tended to stay in Yanceyville, primarily. His great grandfather was a founding member of Blackwell Baptist Church. There are lots of Gwynns buried at the church cemetery. I'm in GA and couldn't make it to my uncle's funeral about a month ago, so my sister in VA took several photos of headstones at the church cemetery, which gave me more Gwynns to research. The Howard-Gwynn reunion takes place in Williamsburg, VA next summer at the Crown Plaza (covers my mom's side-Howard and my father-Gwynn, as many of them married each other. My mother's line includes Withers, who were from Caswell, also and Rockingham Co. I've found some of them in WVA and OH. Thanks for your response.

Hello Doris,
I see that this has come back to a full circle since postings from the past. I understand that the Gwynns are related by marriage. I would say interrelated, if you will. We have narrowed a lot down on the family trees. If you would like, I would like to invite you to view the family tree, where the Gwynns are prevalent in the King and Watlington family ancestry. Our family trees can be found on ancestry.com King, Jones and Weatherford, King Families, NC-WV-IA and Brooks Family Tree. I think that you may find answers. Did your family move to VA or WV?

You are very welcome,

Kim
