John Shenton, Sr., and John Shelton, Jr., appear on the first Stokes County Tax List, dated 1790. They continue to appear together until it appears that John,Sr. died.
John Shelton, Sr., disappears from the Tax List but the John Shelton designated as John Shelton, Jr., continues to appear. As you know, in that era when the older man died, the younger man no longer used "Jr." There follows an excerpt I wrote about the information I found on the Tax List.

John Shelton appears on the Stokes County tax list, beginning in 1790 (being the year of the first tax list) with several individuals who appear to be his sons. This is based on the fact that John apparently made available to them 50 acres of land when they reached maturity. John disappears from the tax lists after 1795, at which time it is assumed that he died (being about 58 yers of age).

The 1790 Stokes Tax list shows the following grouping and they are the only Sheltons shown on the list:
John Shelton, Jr. with 1 poll (the equivalent of the VA tithe tax)
John Shelton, Sr., owning 500 acres of land and no poll (probably forgiven because of age)
Joseph Shelton, owning 50 acres of land and one poll

The 1792 Stokes Tax List shows the following grouping:
John Shelton, Sr., with 500 acres of land and no poll
William Shelton with 50 acres and one poll
Daniel Shelton with no land and one poll
John Shelton, Jr., with no land and one poll

The 1794 Tax list shows Daniel listed next after John, Sr., and in that year Daniel is shown with his 50 acres of land. An interesting fact is that in 1794 John's brother, Azariah Shelton, from Patrick County, VA, is shown, for the first time, on the Stokes County tax list as owning 850 acres of land.

There was also a third John Shelton in Stokes County at this time. He was the son of David Shelton, died in Caswell County, NC. DNA genealogy testing of descendants of David has proven he was from the line of Peter Chilton, who left one or two records with his surname as "Shelton"; married Susannah Jaxon. Peter could not write and signed his documents by mark.
