Looking for Information on Marriage of Rueben Hughes and Delilah Beverly( UNSURE OF HER MADIEN NAME

I have been searching on ancestry.com database for a marriage record for my great great great grandparents Reuben Hughes and Delilah Hughes. I think her maiden name was Beverly. Their daughter Mildred married Thomas Giles of Massies Mill, VA. I found them (Delilah and Reuben)in the 1880 census living in South River, Augusta County, Va. Reuben was born in Nelson County in either 1847 or 1857 and Delilah was born in 1857 in Nelson or Amherst. I thought they were married in Amherst but someone went to the courthouse and did not find any record of their record at Amherst County Courthouse. So now I am back to square one I don't know if they were married in Nelson County or Augusta or in 1874 all I know they were in South River Augusta in 1880 census after that I cant find Rueben or Delilah again. I was told her last name was Beverly and she born in 1858. Some say that Delaware Beverly was her father, I can't find that connection. Can someone please help me find their marriage record and the information on their marriage record and Delilah last name and her parents? Also Delilah and Reuben disappear after 1883, in the 1900 census their children are living with their oldest brother Charles H. Hughes in Massies Mill. He leaves Nelson County and moves to Amherst,VA.
Information on children of Polly Beverly born 1805 in Appomattox,VA
Looking for information on a Polly Beverly born in 1805 in Buckingham, VA to a William Beverly and either Eady Pinn to who he married in 1800 or a Judith Sparrow Beverly who he married in 1827. He and both of his wives have direct lineage to the Monacan and Buffalo Ridge Cherokee of VA tribes. I am searching trying to find out which one of his wives was actually Polly Beverly's mother. Evidently Polly had several children but I can't find a husband in any of the information I have found. I am looking for one of Polly's older children named Evelyn Beverly born around 1825. Evelyn Beverly married a James Giles born some say 1808 or 1815.
Polly also had a son Aldrige, Betesy, and Henry all with the surname of Beverly.
There seems to be two women named Polly Beverly born in 1805, one the Polly's married a man named Tuppence(Two-Pence). Some of the information seem to indicate that they are the same person. Can anyone out there help?
Hello Steve,
I would be glad to help you,if I can.
I just need to ask you a question. In one of your post you say Mary was the mother and she was born in Oct 1824.Then she had four children in Nelson Co Va.but the problem is the years you say are 1826-1836 .So her year must be wrong?
I found a George W White born 1833 Nelson Co Va to a Mary white. No fathers name listed. He married 15 November1855 to Elizabeth Loyd.
I like familysearch.org.They don't have everything online for the state of Va.,but they are working on it.They add new info all the time.
Also I might mention that when using findagrave, the person might not be listed when you do a person search , so try the cemetery search and sometime you will find them.I have found a few of my relatives that way.
Lorene

I have William Nelson White, born 1832, married 10 Aug 1859 to Sarah E. Ponton, born 1837.
I have nothing on George W. White. The book on cemeteries of Nelson County VA by the historical society lists: William Abram White Sept 23 1883-Dec 12 1853, son of George Willis White and Annie Wayland White of Albemarle Co. Married Eunice Fitzpatrick in 1908. Children: Hawes, Lindsay, Reba, William Abram Jr. Apr 26, 1921-Jun 2 1923. I hope this is of use to you. That is all I could find. You may try Find-A-Grave to be helpful. Mary

Marriage Lookup: Hughes/Beverly

I have been searching on ancestry.com database for a marriage record for my great great great grandparents Reuben Hughes and Delilah Hughes. I think her maiden name was Beverly. Their daughter Mildred married Thomas Giles of Roseland. I was told her last name was Beverly and that her father was Delaware Beverly. Can someone please help me find their marriage record and the information on their marriage record and Delilah last name and her parents? Also Delilah and Reuben disappear after 1883, in the 1900 census their children are living with their oldest brother Charles H. Hughes in Massies Mill.
Hi, I found an article in a 1948 issue of the Richmond Times Dispatch that states Mrs. Edwin F. Conger is loaning a portrait of her great great grandfather, Col Francis Vivion Brooking to an exhibition in Richmond, also one of her grandfather, Dr. Henry August Tatum.
It would be an important find to discover if this Brooking portrait still exists. Being able to see a picture of this portrait would be wonderful for his descendants and for the Brooking Society.

I imagine the portraits would be considered family heirlooms and either passed down or donated to a museum.

They may have been mentioned in one or more wills and you said you have a copy of Vivion's will.

Any information or direction you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
Diane Brookins (Brooking)

dbr009135@aol.com
903-887-7998

This would mean a great deal to me and him if you could find it in you heart to scan and send me any old information you have. I can be reached at reboyce3@yahoo.com or reboyce3@hotmail.com . If you need any other verification of who I am I have some family pics also but they are not very old. My grandparents just had their 60th wedding anniversary.

Actually, Sara was a slave of the See family before manumission, but she was possibly owned by the Wolf family before that. I haven't had a chance to look into slave sales in the area. I also have no idea which of the See family owned her, but when she was interviewed in the Wardensville newspaper, she said she was formerly owned by the See family.

Sara & Ed's daughter, Amanda, married an Albert B. Lewis. He died between 1886 and 1899 and was a former slave. I don't think he knew where he was from or when he was born, but in the 1880 census he claimed 1845.

I was told by a white Cabell that the name was spelled CABBELL hundreds of years ago in England and also in early America and it had nothing to do with separating whites from "darkies." Back in those days spelling was of little importance and one could spell ones name whatever way one liked. Must we bring race into every conversation?
My great grandmother was Adsonia Cabbell and I am afraid that Mr. Nicholas, as helpful as he tries to be, has many suppositions in his treatise due to misinterpretations of the facts and data.

I did find Elizabeth Dawson in the 1850 Census for Nelson County, Virginia (not Upshur) in the household of Ira Foster, the son of Thomas Foster and Helena Humphrey of Albemarle (and later Louisa), and the brother of my ggg grandfather, Thomas F. Foster. Ira and Thomas were blacksmiths, as was their father.

Unfortunately, she is listed as having been born in Virginia, as is Stephen, who is listed as such throughout the remainder of his life -- naming Albemarle as his county of origin. I have read the History of Upshur County pertaining to the Dawsons and find it odd that Stephen would list Albemarle as his place of birth if he had been born before 1812 when Hiram allegedly emigrated from Scotland to Virginia. I HAVE found a Hiram Dawson that lived in Orange County, Virginia, in the 1820 Census with a family that fits the ages necessary and find him again in 1830 Census but this time in Albemarle County.

I will be glad to examine the Personal Property Tax lists in Orange, Albemarle, and Nelson counties to see when they moved and when Hiram may have died. I am positive that the Hiram listed in Albemarle in 1830 is our guy. He was born in the late 1760s or early 1770s.

I also notice that there is a Chancery Court record in Nelson County from 1842 concerning Elizabeth Dawson brought by a John Bailey. I will be happy to read through this, too. If the names on link below have any meaning, surely it is that this is the right Elizabeth Dawson and it will make mention of her family:

http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/case_detail.asp?CFN=125...

While it is possible that there was a Hiram Dawson in Scotland that came to Virginia and died shortly thereafter, as it states in The History of Upshur County, I see no record of it in immigration sources.

I am willing to bet that I can find record of Hiram Dawson's will in Albemarle or Nelson and certainly can find record of Elizabeth's death. Since she was already being sued in 1842 by someone and the case lists a lot of names, I bet she was being sued as an heir of her late husband, Hiram.

My bet is they are not from Scotland, at least as immediate as an 1812-1814 immigration, since Stephen was born before that time and lists his origin as Virginia, and because his mother, Elizabeth Dawson, lists her origin as Virginia. This is not foolproof but tends to strongly suggest that they were already established in Virginia.

I believe two more of their children include Perlina Wade who married John Eubanks and Perlina who joined the Baptist church in 1842, probably in Nelson co. Does your research regarding The Daniel Wade Family and connected families note anything regarding Baptist churches in Nelson co /amherst co area in the early 1840s. Thank you.

The information on Hiram Dawson came from my GGG GW Dawson who was the son of John Dawson, son of Stephen Dawson. Stephen Dawson's father, Hiram, died shortly after arriving in the US from Scotland in 1810 and is buried in Prince George County, not far from from the port where their ship arrived (near Cold Harbor). They were headed to Nelson County because they had relatives there.

Stephen's mother, Elizabeth, was having a hard time financially and went to work for the Foster's as a nanny and house keeper. Both familities moved together to the Little Sand Run in Upshur County, West Virginia via the Stanton-Parkersburg Turnpike.

Re: Stephen Dawson/Nelson Co., VA>Upshur Co., WV

I highly doubt that Stephen Dawson was the son of Hiram Dawson of Scotland, as Hiram was not old enough to be his father. I thought that it would be likely if Stephen Dawson was related to the John Sorrell Dawson family of that part of Amherst that later became Nelson County.

Dicey Wade was daughter of Daniel Wade and Malinda Linny Witt. Daniel Wade was son of Nancy Daniel who purportedly married Jeremiah Wade of Amherst County (1764-1791) and later married George Morriss of Edloe Farm which is just southeast of the town of Amherst. I visited the farm itself a few weeks ago and viewed the old Morriss graveyard. There had been mention of Jeremiah Wade (1764-1791) being buried there and I found that one of the oldest graves in the cemetery had an updated grave marker that simply read "J.W." Given the antiquity of the grave and the fact that no other families with last names starting with "W" were buried there until the late 1800s, I assume that this is the grave of Jeremiah Wade.

I hope to continue to work on the Dawson line. Stephen Dawson and Dicey Wade had a daughter named Mary Elizabeth Dawson that married Nimrod Bramham Foster, brother of my ggg grandfather, Thomas Franklin Foster. Thomas Franklin Foster married Malinda Garland, daughter of Fleming Garland and Elizabeth Wade (a daughter of Daniel Wade and Malinda Linny Witt and thus a sister of Dicey Wade!).

Hi Nelson,
I am the great grandaughter of Lloyd Fitzgerald. My grandfather was his and Annie's son Hawthorne Fitzgerald. I have a list of our relatives as far back as 1730. Most of this can be found at familysearch.org
