The Signer is not this George Walton (b.1724)of this marriage and George is the younger brother of Robert Walton (b.1717). BUT, Robert Walton (b.1717) had a son named George (b.Dec 1749)and he is the Signer from Georgia. I descend from the signer's "Uncle George" (as mentioned above). This first George married Martha Hughes (b.1730)

All rather confusing when they didn't us Jr. or III or IV

Sandra, I moved to NKCo about 10 years ago .. and recently my husand and I bought a farm off Farmer's Drive in the eastern-most part of the county. I have done extensive research on the property - as far back as the county records go ... which I'm sure you know is not all that far back since there is such an unfortunate loss of documentation re official records. At any length, I enjoy reading queries and responses re NKCo families - and hope some of the info crosses with families I look for. I have a good friend who was a Montcastle by birth and I will share you posting with her.
Best regards,
Sandi Gaithier

Good morning. I have some information on the Saunders family. I currently own the James Saunders family bible. I checked the dates you listed and they match birth and death listed. He died in 1879. Very old leather bound bible.
If you would like information or pictures let me know.
Daveandjoy0022@yahoo.com

Daddy passed away in 2000, but he gave me all of his records.

His records indicate that Waldegrave Clopton, born 1755, did have a son named Waldegrave who married Frances Lamar 15 Oct 1939 in Putnam County, GA - SOURCE: Joseph T. Maddux and Mary Carter. 37,000 Early Georgia Marriages.
Putnum County, p. 218.

Unfortunately, there is no record of children of their marriage in his records.

If you are able to document their children, I would love to have the information for our family tree.

Kindest regards,

Edwina Guinn McLeod

Max. thanks for answering so fast. We have found things for Henry Snead, he signed the Grievancs paper in the Bacons Rebellion, Bill found it at Blisland Parish Records. We have Samuel Jr's. will and have found all the court records for the Stafford land sale and dispute among family members at simpsonhistory.com. Hatcher said that in 1683 Henry after Bacon's Rebellion sold the land of his father and moved across the York River. Bill and I know the last reference to Samuel Sr. was in 1664. We go to LVA June 1st, hopefully find some more facts. Our tree is Snead-Harris-Sands-Turner
Thanks again Vickie

Vickie,

The 1664 description of Mr. Samuell Snead Sr. as an adjacent owner in the Woodward grant is the next-to-last mention I have found of him The last was in the patent grant of March 1667/8 to John Sexton for 1,000 acres in New Kent next to "Mr. Snead". I am deducing that the reference was to the same Samuel Sr. because another adjacent landowner in that grant is "Mr. Woodward".

Considering how old Samuel, Sr. had become by 1670 and the reference to multiple Sneads as sellers (suggesting inheritances) to Col. Johnson, I feel it is a safe conclusion that Samuel Sr. was dead by 1689, when he does not appear as one of the owners of land on the Pamunkey Neck in the processioning record of New Kent County, and "Col. Johnson" does appear as an owner on that list. You have seen the other details in this Ancestry string showing that Johnson bought his land from "the Sneads". So, the purchase from the Sneads seems certain to have happened between 1668 and 1689.

The Pamunkey Neck landowners were on the north side of the Pamunkey River. It is worth noting that the north side of the river was little-settled at that time. Samuel Sr. seems to have been one of the first three colonists to have gained the favor of the Pamunkey Indian queen and been allowed to purchase desireable land on the riverbank at a time when grants from the Crown were forbidden by law. Woodward was the queen’s legal representative in dealing with the House of Burgesses and the Crown and his land was down river from Samuel Sr.’s. The other owner (down river running to the confluence with the Mattiponi to form the York River), was John West, commander of the New Kent County militia from 1652 to 1673, who, by some accounts, fathered a child with the Indian queen. This suggests to me that Samuel Sr. had a significant role in the transitional events of the time.

Regarding which Sneads sold to Col. Johnson, researchers who construct a family based on a common last name and physical presence have stuck Henry in the “child of Samuel and Alice” slot. I’m not convinced yet, and may never be. The only records mentioning Henry that I have found are (1) a 1665 Stafford County Court order book entry granting one Thomas Butler the right of attachment on Henry’s assets on account of his unpaid debt, and (2) his bold signature, one of eighty-eight signers, of a petition on 2 Apr 1677 protesting a 2 shilling per hogshead tax. Henry’s connection to a younger John Snead in New Kent is suggested by John’s naming of his (apparent) first-born son Henry.

The same 1689 processioning record shows two Sneads over on the south side of the Pamunkey. One is John, likely the sane John mentioned in the previous paragraph, and the other is Thomas. So, they could have been some or all of the Sneads from whom Col. Johnson bought, although I think Thomas may be from another Snead line.

You probably know this, but I will add it anyway. The Samuel Snead who was probably the Junior to Samuel Sr. died in the late 1680's in Stafford County. His will lists a number of weapons and his horse’s name was Trooper. My guesses are (1) that the two Samuels, perhaps Henry, and maybe the immigrant son William, fought the Indians of a different tribe in the Stafford County area some time in the 1650's to 1670's with Col. John West, which worked to the advantage of the Pamunkey Indians and (2) that their participation lead to the 1664 purchase of the land on the Pamunkey River.

You might find something on these Sneads at the LVA in the records of military activity against the Indians and/or during Bacon’s Rebellion.

I’ll appreciate it if you will let me know of any discoveries you make.

Thanks,

Max

Max, Hi this is Vickie, sister of Bill, a few years ago you helped us find Richard Sneads father, Holman. We are now trying to find out as close to when Samuel Snead died. I have been researching Richard Johnson and saw your reply to someone about Pamunkey. What is the latest date other than 1664 do you know of Samuel? Do you know when Johnson bought the land from we presume from Henry? We are going to LVA in June and trying to do some research before we go.
As always thanks for your help, Vickie Snead

I cannot reliably locate him in the 1860 census.

Were there actually two different men named Washington Tyler or is there more to this mystery?

Thanks,
Michael W. Tyler
Would anyone have information regarding William Jennings and Mary Allen of New Kent Co., VA around 1720? William was born 1702. There is confusion to the name of his wife...Mary Allen OR Mary Pulliam.

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for the info. I "stumbled" into the Marriage records shortly after making the first inquiry.

I do believe that George "Taylor" is the George Tyler I seek and from scanning the record I see his father Thomas Tyler b. @1832 in Hanover County was the son of Thomas Tyler and Ann. Thomas and Eliza, appear in the 1860 New Kent census with Samuel Webb aged 60, as Family 170. In the same marriage register, George also had a uncle, Washington Tyler b. @ 1828 in Hanover County.

Now, part two - who were the parents of the Thomas Tyler who married Ann? I seem to be unable to locate them in any census. Also, in 1850, I think Washington Tyler is living with Cornelius Dabney, Family 19, Southeastern District of Hanover County.

Thanks,
Mike

Well what excitement! I just discovered that James Trice II, born in Huntingdonshire,England, nicknamed "Emigrant" was the first emigrant from England in my family. He married Caroline Starling in 1674 in New Kent, VA. They had the following children: James Trice III, born in 1677 in Carolina County, VA; Edward Trice I born in 1680 in New Kent County, VA; and Goodwin Trice, born in 1700 in Hanover County, VA. My records show that he received a land grant in 1673 of 226 acres in New Kent. Do you have any other info??? Please write me at sjaskew@yahoo.com
