My interest in Nottoway County comes from my grandmother having grown up nearby in Darvills, Dinwiddie Co. and later in Blackstone, so this was an interesting question. After searching about an hour, I found some information on Bellefonte. Go to Genealogy Trails:

According to this article on the history of Nottoway, Bellefonte was one of two horse race tracks in the county. It was laid out around 1822, a few miles east of Blackstone, and was apparently very popular uintil the people involved found religion. Very interesting to read. I recommend this article to everyone who reads this thread.
