According to Pippenger's index, Ralph S. Downs' will was probated in 1846 (Nottoway WB 8, p 345). Based on the 1840 and 1850 census returns, it appears that his wife was Dicey T. Downs (maiden name unknown), born 1801-1802 in Prince Edward Co; and his two children were William J. Downs, born 1834-1835, and Mary E. Downs, born 1836-1837. Also living with the family in 1850 was an unidentified Mary Flippen age 63, born in Nottoway.
Earlier postings on this board identify the daughter as Mary Eunice Downs who married 22 Nov 1854 in Nottoway, James C. Robertson.
Ralph S. Downs does not appear in the census before 1840 despite being age 40 to 50.
Would like to know the contents of the will and the date signed and date proved. Also would like to know if anyone doing local research has come across any other record of Ralph S. Downs.
On the same census page in 1840 was found Robert S. Flippen. He had been in Prince Edward in 1830. In 1917, Charles Emmet Downs was deposed and stated that his father was William J. Downs, that William J. Downs prepared the will (1879) of Robert S. Flippen, and that Robert S. Flippen was the "great uncle" of Charles E. Downs.
Clues regarding that relationship also sought.
