Go to the website moring to mooring

Richard Henderson Moring, the son of Caswell and Emily Moring, was born in 1836 at the Moring home place in Prince Edward County, Va. He was the seventh of nine boys and eighth of ten siblings.

At the outbreak of the war, he was earning a living as a farmer in Lunenburg County.

He enlisted on May 28, 1861 at Meherrin, in "K" Company of the 21st Virginia Infantry, as a private."K" company was known as the "Meherrin Greys".

At the time of his enlistment, he was listed as 5'9" tall, black hair, hazel eyes, and a dark complexion.

He was listed as POW at Spotsylvania on May 12, 1864. He was sent to Point Lookout Prison, Maryland, and then to Elmira Prison in New York State. He was "exchanged" on October 11, 1864 and it is unclear whether he rejoined his unit or served as a "home guard" in Prince Edward County.

He was admitted to Farmville Hospital where he stayed from January 3, 1865 until March 16, 1865. His ailment was listed as "pneumonia and debility."

In the final days of Lee's last stand, he was again POW. This time captured at Amelia on April 6, 1865. Ironically, he was captured less than six miles from the Moring home place in Prince Edward County. Once again, he was sent to Point Lookout and was held until June 15, 1865 after taking the "Oath of Allegiance."

After the war, he returned to the Moring home place to settle and assumed a life of farming and earning a living as a carpenter.

His final years were spent in Danville, with his second wife Annie Eliza Wise Moring, probably residing near or with his daughter Mary H. Moring.

He died in 1910 and is buried on the old Moring home place near Rice. The exact location of his grave on the property is unknown.

William Wyatt Moring was born in 1818 at the Moring home place in Prince Edward County. He was the oldest of Caswell and Emily's nine boys.

He was listed as "sheriff" in the 1850 Amelia County, Virginia Federal Census.

He served in "H" Company of the 44th Virginia Infantry of Amelia County, Virginia alongside his son Walter Fabius Maximus Moring.

He was dismissed late in 1861 for being "over age" for service.

Thank you very much. Some of this is new information and I will add it to what I have. If they attended a church at some point, perhaps their is a church record. I am trying to find some kind of record of George changing his name. I believe the mother (Catherine) died on the way over or soon after arriving when George was young. The only mention I have of her is with George's brother Thomas (marriage record) mentioning her as Catherine (deceased).
If you gain any other information, I would be very grateful to have it. I have been on this search for a long time.
Thank you very much.
Sarah

I am looking for information regarding my grandfather, William Henry Fitzgerald. My father, Richard Fitzgerald, attempted to learn more about his paternal relatives during his lifetime, with only limited success. He never knew even the names of his father's parents. I remember visiting Blackstone as a child. The names "Aunt Masie" and "Simmons" are familiar to me, but I cannot connect them. Apparently, my grandfather left Blackstone as a teenager and never returned nor spoke of his family there.

My Confederate ancestor was killed in battle on 23 June 1864 just west of Blackstone. I know his wife received word of his death, since it was entered in the family Bible. They were in Sherman's path and left GA to join family in Fla. I researched until I found the time and place of his death. He was with 62nd or 8th Ga. Cavalry under Brig. Gen. James Dearing, may have been wounded and died the next day. Name: A. H. Shepherd. Battle between US Cavalry under Wilson and Confed. took place just west of Blackstone. Any history or suggestions of buriel appreciated. In July I'm driving up from Fla. to the site.

Thank you for your replies. This is such an important trip for me. No one in Asa's family ever knew anything, but that he was killed near Petersburg on 24 June 1854. That information had been tucked away in a Family Bible for generations, until I began searching. On Fold 3 I found a report of his Company which describes the battle with Wilson's forces along the railroad track on June 23, 1864 and the report says "one killed and four wounded". I'm going to check other company reports.

Annie, I do not know where the burial would have been but there is a Civil War marker at the location of the battle. It is located on old rt.460 between Nottoway and Blackstone which follows the railroad tracks that were being torn up at time of the battle.

Have you looked at a series of books called "The Virginia Regimental Series"? You may find some information there. Also, if you're coming to Virginia from Florida, you should consider travelling the few extra miles to Richmond. Blackstone is about an hour from Richmond. If time allows, The Library of Virginia has a wealth of information. So does the Virginia Historical Society.

Joe Neagle
Mechanicsville, VA

Bellefonte has long been one of the magisterial or election districts of Nottoway County. You can see the boundary definition at http://research.archives.gov/description/5885164. It covers generally the Town of Blackstone and the eastern portion of the county. Bellefonte was proposed as the new name for the village of Blacks and Whites in the 1880s, but the Post Office objected because of the possibility of confusion with other Bellefontes, particularly Bellefonte, Pa. Blackstone was then proposed as an alternative.

According to Pippenger's index, Ralph S. Downs' will was probated in 1846 (Nottoway WB 8, p 345). Based on the 1840 and 1850 census returns, it appears that his wife was Dicey T. Downs (maiden name unknown), born 1801-1802 in Prince Edward Co; and his two children were William J. Downs, born 1834-1835, and Mary E. Downs, born 1836-1837. Also living with the family in 1850 was an unidentified Mary Flippen age 63, born in Nottoway.

Earlier postings on this board identify the daughter as Mary Eunice Downs who married 22 Nov 1854 in Nottoway, James C. Robertson.

Ralph S. Downs does not appear in the census before 1840 despite being age 40 to 50.

Would like to know the contents of the will and the date signed and date proved. Also would like to know if anyone doing local research has come across any other record of Ralph S. Downs.

On the same census page in 1840 was found Robert S. Flippen. He had been in Prince Edward in 1830. In 1917, Charles Emmet Downs was deposed and stated that his father was William J. Downs, that William J. Downs prepared the will (1879) of Robert S. Flippen, and that Robert S. Flippen was the "great uncle" of Charles E. Downs.

Clues regarding that relationship also sought.

I had a suspicion the link may not work, it's happenned before when posting a link to their maps.

Got to VA Historical Society's site:

http://www.vahistorical.org/

Click on "search VHS Collections" in the upper right. Click on "Search Collections", again in the upper right. Type in "maps nottoway virginia" and check the box that reads "Restrict Search to Records with Digital Images or Electronic Links". Then click the word "Search" in the upper left. This takes you to the results page I sent the link for. There are two maps listed. Click on the blue print in the appropriate box in the "Image" column and another page will pop up. Click on the map image, then you will see a navigable map. Choose the proper zoom level and "Window Size" "640x480", then click on the map. This will enlarge the map.

I don't like the way this map viewer works, but this is a good source for old maps. I have found where several ancesters lived in the 1800's and early 1900's. After you play around with it, it gets a little easier.

Sorry for the lengthy instructions, but I wanted you to be able to go straight to it.

I'll search for Namozine Rd. later, and let you know what I find.
My interest in Nottoway County comes from my grandmother having grown up nearby in Darvills, Dinwiddie Co. and later in Blackstone, so this was an interesting question. After searching about an hour, I found some information on Bellefonte. Go to Genealogy Trails:

http://genealogytrails.com/vir/nottoway/history.html

According to this article on the history of Nottoway, Bellefonte was one of two horse race tracks in the county. It was laid out around 1822, a few miles east of Blackstone, and was apparently very popular uintil the people involved found religion. Very interesting to read. I recommend this article to everyone who reads this thread.

I hope this at least helps a little.

Joe Neagle

I ran across this while researching another persons request for info on Bellfonte Rd.which was east of Blackstone. Bellfonte was an estate with a horse racing track on or near it. It was located to the east of Blckstone Va. In 1941 the Army acquired a large portion of land (Its in three counties) to biuld Camp Picket, now Fort Picket, that encompassed that area.

Good Morning. Thanks again for your help. Do you live in this area of Virginia? I was born in Wytheville and lived in Bland County until I was a teenager. I'm hoping when the 1940 census is released that I will find Thomas Barney and Pearl alive and well! If not, I'm thinking they are buried somewhere in the Blackstone area. It seems that when I attempt to attach a picture of the peach orchard the message is not sent to you. If you would like the picture, I can send it to your email address.
Thanks again and have a great day.
Loretta

I looked at 1930 census and it indicated they resided on Bellefonte rd. On checking with a couple old timers ther could not recall its location. Bellefonte was an estate with a well known horse racing track. In reading about it drew people from the east shore to the mountains. It was located a short distance east of Blackstone Va. Army Fort Picket is located presently to the east of Blackstone and extents into three different counties. I suspect that when the military took over in (I beivieve) the early 40,s that they encompassed that location. Jim

What are you looking for in Southampton County? There is a lot of information available for that county. Check out this web site:

brantleyassociation.com

You will find, probably, the most comprehensive viewing of the records for Southampton County, Virginia on the web.

I have noticed that there were a great deal of free Blacks in the West Side of Nottoway River in the 1860. This includes my GGG grandparents, Hack and Margaret Brown.

Does anyone have any information about this area? Thanks!

Robin

Hi, Ben. So glad to hear from you. I mailed you a skeketal back trace from you & your child back to Peter G. last winter; but I think it got lost in all the flurry of the huge snow that kept you from getting home. Both your grandmom, Mamie and your mom have my contact info and you may also leave me a message on my FBook wall: Ruth Morgan Hairston. I have amassed extensive files & photos on P.G. and the current descendants of all of his children.

Hey all, This is Benjamin Todd Jealous, great- great-great grandson of Peter G. Morgan. The house on Bollingbrook Street no longer exists. However, it was moved there from another location. Peter lived in that house at its original location with his family after paying for his and his wife's freedom. Ann Todd (Jealous) is my mom. Anyway would love to meet any of you distant cousins. All the best, Ben

I am not familiar with a John "W." Moore. However, my John Moore (born 1810 died 1891 as I recall) married Mary Frances Jones. Have never seen a middle name or initial on John Moore.

We think that Susan Lafaver Farley's father was a Stephen Farley. Haven't made much progress on that line, but the Farleys, Moores, and Joneses were definitely intermarried, and made the trip from Virginia to Mississippi.

Regards

Tom
Benjamin Thomas Moore
uttom@aol.com
