Robert Lee Montgomery, 86, of Magnolia, N.C., died Thursday, February 24, 2005, at Wake Medical Heart Center in Raleigh, N.C.
He was born August 31, 1918 in Ararat to the late Claude W. and Rebecca Bowman Montgomery.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, Claude Montgomery; two sisters, Millie Montgomery and Alma Griffin; and a son-in-law, Dr. Oakie Newsome.
He served in the U.S. Army for two years during World War II in Rhineland Central Europe with the 406th Infantry, leaving with a rank of Technician 4. He also worked for Glen L. Martin Airplanes as a mechanic, building and restoring airplanes during the war.
He trained further with Chrysler Corporation in Flint, Mich., before working for Lawrence Motors in Richmond. Montgomery worked on the Norfolk Naval Base in the public transportation department, retiring after 20 years. He won many awards through his work with Chrysler Corporation and Norfolk Naval Base. He was the owner of Bob's V.W. Garage.
Surviving are his wife, Fannie Powell Harris Montgomery of the home; one daughter, Patsy Montgomery Newsome of Lexington, Ky.; one brother, Gates Montgomery of Ararat; two sisters, Virginia Thompson of Ararat and Mildred Pell of Walkertown; two stepsons, James R. Harris and Melvin "Mel" Harris, both of Warsaw, N.C.; a sister-in-law; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at Community Chapel, Community Funeral Home in Warsaw. The Rev. Dale Myers officiated. Burial was in Devotional Gardens in Warsaw.
