John J. Clark Sr

John J. Clark Sr., 33, of Pine Valley Drive, Bassett, died Friday, January 29, 2010, at his home.

He was born in Martinsville on February 6, 1976, and was a son of Thelma Rae Skeens Jones of Bassett and the late Curtis Lee Clark Sr.

He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Raymond and Elizabeth Skeens and Nellie and John J. Clark.

He attended Franklin County High School and Victory Baptist Church.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his stepfather, Larry Wayne Jones; his wife, Kimberly Lynn Helton Clark of Stuart; three sons, Christopher J. Clark, John J. Clark Jr. and Dakota W. Clark, all of Stuart; one stepson, Brandon Lee Helton of Stuart; one brother, Curtis Lee Clark Jr. of Bassett; and one sister, Barbara E. Clark of Martinsville.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) in the mausoleum at Roselawn Burial Park.
Arrangements are by Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home.

Clayton Ray Collins

Mr. Clayton Ray Collins, 56 of Stuart passed away Friday morning at Pioneer Hospital in Stuart.

He was born in Patrick County November 17, 1953 to the late Moir and Gracie Lawson Collins and worked for A. C Furniture in Eden N.C. He was also preceded in death by a brother; Clarence Collins and his stepmother, Endie Collins.

Mr. Collins is survived by four sons and daughters-in law; Jesse and Jennifer Collins of Kannapolis, N.C., Jamey and Alice Collins of Concord, N.C., Jeremy and Amanda Collins of Oxford, N.C., Brandon Collins of Stuart, VA, and six grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters; JoAnn Roberson and Georgia Handy both of Stuart.

A memorial service for Mr. Collins will be held at 2:00 PM Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Tommy Nichols officiating. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until time for the service and other times at the home of Georgia Handy at 1779 Dobyns Rd. Bettie Clifton Deal

Ms. Bettie Clifton Deal, age 68 of Stuart, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2010 at her home.

She was born in Patrick County on October 2, 1941 to the late George and Rosie Hughes Clifton.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Deal was preceded in death by one son, Larry Lovelace; one grandson, Brandon Dillon; one granddaughter, Katherine Rose Lovelace; one sister, Ethel Agee; and four brothers, Dillard, James, Eugene and Richard Clifton.

Ms. Deal is survived by one daughter, Sandra Lovelace of Patrick Springs; one son, Jeffrey Richards of Bland; three grandchildren, Patricia Martin, Shannon Brumage and Krystle Brumage; one great-grandchild, Caleb Martin; two brothers, Vance Clifton of Ridgeway and Jerry Clifton of Stoneville, North Carolina; and one sister, Minnie Cassell of Bassett.

Funeral services for Ms. Deal will be held Thursday, February 4, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial will follow in the Adams Family Cemetery. James Rufus Ellis

James Rufus Ellis, 91, of Stuart, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

He was born Sept. 18, 1918, to Cary Rufus and Louisa Ann Corns Ellis.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Donald Ray Ellis; six sisters, Florence Griffin, Norah Biggs, Gracie Stovall, Bertha Smith, Nina Nelson and Pearl Nelson; and two brothers, Leonard and Delma Ellis.

Ellis retired from Lester Home Center with 48 years of service, and he was a lifelong farmer.
He helped build the Moorefield Store Volunteer Fire Department and was a charter member. He was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Edna Lawrence Ellis of the home; two daughters, LeeAnn Collins of Stuart and Sharon Coleman of Monroe, N.C.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or to the Moorefield Store Volunteer Fire Department.

Mary Janney Frazier

Mary Janney Frazier, 75, of Martinsville, died Friday, January 29, 2010, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Giles County on November 24, 1934 and was a daughter of the late Everett L. Janney and Ruby Peters Janney.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Delmer Lee Frazier; and a sister, Evelyn J. Lawson.

She retired from DuPont as a technical assistant after 39 years of service, and attended Starling Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving are one son, Mikel Dale Frazier of Martinsville; three sisters, Frances J. Smith of Daleville, Elizabeth C. Janney Gibbs of Rocky Mount and Charlotte J. Lawson of Stuart; one brother, Everett L. Janney Jr. of Ridgeway; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Monday at Roselawn Abbey with Dr. David Adkins officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 3907, Martinsville, Va. 24115, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Chester Lee Hopkins

Chester Lee Hopkins, 82, of Bassett, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010 at his home.

He was born in Patrick County on Dec. 26, 1927, to Jesse Lee Hopkins and Nannie Belle Foley Hopkins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Doris Marie Dalton Hopkins; a sister, Eleanor Claudine Turner; and two brothers, James Harold Hopkins and George Burton Hopkins.

Hopkins served as a corporal in the Army and worked for Gardner’s Music Company as an electronic technician from 1955-2007.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Martinsville.

Surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth Anne Edwards and Vicky DeHart, both of Bassett; two sons, Michael Lee Hopkins of Bassett and Robert Dean Hopkins of Roanoke; a sister, Lillian Frances Clark of Martinsville; three brothers, Richard Ervin Hopkins of Kodak, Tenn., Norman Clyde Hopkins of Dalton, Ga., and Douglas Eugene Hopkins of Hallwood; three grandsons; three granddaughters; seven great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Bassett Chapel, with Pastor Ron Mateer officiating. Burial will be in Patrick Memorial Gardens in Stuart with military rites by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the home of his daughter, Anne Edwards, 479 County Line Road, Bassett.

Lonny Nelson Johnson

ARARAT, Va. — Lonny Nelson Johnson, 71, of Ararat, passed away Feb. 1, 2010, after a sudden illness.

Lonny served in the U.S. Air Force and was a retired policeman in Salem, Ohio, and LRMC in Leesburg, Fla.

Lonny was preceded in death by his parents, Roy N. and Lillian A. Johnson; and sisters, Judy Johnson and Debbie Thompson.

Survivors include his wife, Ardith Cherie Johnson of Ararat; sons, Tony Johnson of Rosman, N.C., and Kevin Johnson of Ararat; daughters, Julie Johnson of Summerfield, Fla., and Kelly Dravis of Sugar Land, Texas; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Jack Johnson of Weirsdale, Fla., Don Johnson of Groveland, Fla., Terry Johnson of Deltona, Fla., and Mike Johnson of California; and sisters, Sue Ross of Virginia, Lynn Fanelli of Edgewater, Fla., and Mary Whitlock of Weirsdale, Fla.

Services will be held at a later date in Summerfield, Fla

Virginia Hughes Lancaster

Mrs. Virginia Hughes Lancaster, age 77 of Hillsville, and formerly of Stuart, passed away Monday, February 1, 2010 at Pioneer Community Hospital.

She was born in Patrick County on June 10, 1932 to the late Hampton and Nannie Crisman Hughes.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lancaster was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert C. Lancaster, Sr., and five brothers, Glenn Hughes, Harry Lee Hughes, Murry Hughes, Ted Hughes and Bill Crisman.

She was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church and had worked for Pannill Knitting and Charmell Manufacturing. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Lancaster is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Juanita Carol Johnson of Roanoke and Nannette and Larry Haden of Stuart; two sons and daughters-in-law, Herbert C. “Butch” and Teresa Lancaster of Stuart and Mark and Susan Lancaster of Critz; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Howard Hughes and Dewey Hughes, both of Stuart.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lancaster will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with Pastor Darrell Boles officiating. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Willis Hobert Pell II

MOUNT AIRY — The The Rev. Willis Hobert Pell, II, 74, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday evening, February 3, 2010, at Northern Hospital of Surry County.

The Rev. Pell was born October 15, 1935, in Patrick County, VA, son of the late Joseph Wheeler and Cora King Pell.

He retired from Proctor-Silex Inc. after many years of service and was a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Cana, VA. The Rev. Pell was also a retired minister, and he and his wife enjoyed singing in gospel groups, including the Glory Road Quartet.

He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Deborah Lynn and Jerry Poteat of Mount Airy and Carolyn Denise Warren of Pinnacle; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary Willis and Karen Pell of Hillsville, VA; three grandchildren, Christy Hernandez and her husband, Marcos, of Walkertown, Ami Isaacs of Roanoke, VA, and Kayla Pell of Hillsville, VA; a stepgranddaughter and her husband, Tammy and Darrell Curry; two great-grandchildren, Isabella Hernandez and Alex Hernandez; three great-stepgrandchildren, Brianna Poteat, Brandi Poteat, and Kayleigh Curry; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Alene and Charlie Tillis of Hogansville, GA, Annie and Ozzie Montgomery of Ramseur, and Sylvia and Elmer “Moe” Dawson of Claudville, VA; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Joseph and Mildred Pell of Walkertown, Benjamin and Pauline Pell of Mount Airy, and Marie Pell of Claudville, VA; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gloria and Melvin Snow of Ararat, VA. and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, the Rev. Pell was preceded in death by his wife, Fenten Marie McBride Pell; a brother, Harrison Pell; and two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Viola and Jess Edwards and Martha Hosey.

The funeral services will be held Sunday February 7, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. at Oak Ridge Baptist Church with services conducted by Rev. David “Buster” Sechrist and Rev. Myron Dalton with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday 1:00 P.M. until time for the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Skilled Nursing Facility at Northern Hospital of Surry County, 830 Rockford St. Mt. Airy, NC. 27030. The family will also be meeting and receiving friends at the home of Rev. Pell on Friday from 12:00 PM until 6:00 P.M. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the Pell family. Sherman McDaniel Sawyers, 56, of Fries, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at his home.

He was born in Patrick County on April 24, 1953 to William Walker and Susan Delia Smith Sawyers.

Survivors include his special friend, Janice Melton of Fries; sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise and Ron Jones of Pinnacle, N.C., Josephine and Ike Larry of Woodbridge, N.Y., Geneva Reyes of Galax and Lealur Reddick of Mount Airy, N.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnny and Treva Sawyers, Leroy Sawyers, all of Galax and Walter Lee and Doris Sawyers of Mount Airy, N.C.; sister-in-law, Cindy Sawyers of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a host of nieces and nephews and friends; and special friends, Don Melton and Kelley Hodge.

A funeral was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home Chapel. Evangelist Clarissa Pierce officiated. Burial followed in Felts Memorial Cemetery.

Kathy Anne Seymour, 36, of King, N.C., died Tuesday, January 26, 2010.

Surviving are one daughter, Kandra McBride of King; one son, Phillip McBride of Stuart; her mother, Gail Estes and stepfather, James King of Mount Airy, N.C.; father, Mike Pomeroy of High Point, N.C.; one sister, Bambi Adams of Mount Airy; one brother, Michael W. Pomeroy of Mount Airy; maternal grandmother, Katherine Estes of Conquest, N.Y.; grandfather and grandmother, Glen and Ginny Estes of Mount Airy; three aunts, three uncles, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held Friday at King Christian Center with Pastor Randall Smith officiating.

Charles Lowdnes Tate Jr

Charles Lowdnes Tate Jr. of Midlothian, his home for the past 40 years, died Sunday, January 24, 2010.

He was born in Asheville, N.C., on December 8, 1943.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles L. Tate Sr. and his mother, Eugenia Tate Stirewalt, and his grandparents, Riley G. and Cora E. Carter.

He graduated from Anacostia High School in Washington, DC in 1961, and from VCU in 1972. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1963 and was a Spec 4 in the 82nd Airborne Division, 505 Infantry Regiment, Delta Company, Fort Bragg, N.C.
In April, 1964, his regiment was air dropped into Santo Domingo, where after only 45 days he was aiding a wounded comrade and was injured by sniper fire. On June 15, 1964, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal, and V Device for his heroic actions.
He was a member of the VFW Post 1426 and a lifetime member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association and of the Paralyzed Veterans of America where he was past director of the MidAtlantic Chapter.

Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Denise Stirewalt of Stuart; niece, Cynthia Stirewalt of Stuart; nephews, Wesley Stirewalt of Charlotte, N.C., and Benjamin Rorrer of Stuart; and cousins, Guy Cipriano and wife, Shawn, of Greenville, S.C., and Vince Cipriano and wife, Donna, of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

A private burial was held Monday in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, N.C.
A memorial service and visitation will be held Saturday, February 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Bliley's Funeral Home, 6900 Hull Street Road, Richmond. www.blileyfuneralhomes.com
