ROANOKE — William Clarence “W.C.” Clark, 94, of Roanoke, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.
He was born July 8, 1915, in Patrick Springs to Bud and Allie Clark.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Joseph “Joe” Clark, Dal Clark, Manion Clark, Russell Clark and George Clark.
He was a retired builder/contractor and a member of First Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Clark; two sons, William David Clark and Glenn D. Clark; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; five sisters, Annie Sue Hawks, Della Hawks, Mae Martin, Dorothy Mills and Martha Hutchens; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Oakey’s East Chapel with Dr. Steve Wingfield, Dr. Kenneth Foutz, the Revs. Brian Custer and Paul Haithcock officiating.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens.

Clennie Belle Dawson
Clennie Belle Dawson, 86, of Cana, died Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy, N.C.
She was born December 3, 1923, in Carroll County and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Minnie Branson Dawson.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Hassie Haynes; and three brothers, Garnet Dawson, Luke Dawson and Eugene Dawson.
She retired from Spencer's Inc. and was a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are two brothers and four sisters-in-law, Glenn and Margie Dawson, Walter and Julia Dawson, and Eulala Dawson, all of Cana, and Esther Dawson of Ararat; and many special nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held Saturday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with the Rev. Isreal Gwyn officiating. Burial was in the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

James William Dillon, 85, of 1241 Spencer Preston Road, Martinsville, VA died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, VA.
He was born on June 26, 1924 in Patrick County, VA to the late Frank William Dillon and Mary Hutchinson Dillon.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Long; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Dillon was a lifelong member of Old Well Christian Church, Spencer, VA where he served as a deacon, greeter and was a member of the Christian Men's Fellowship. He was still working for DeShazo Oil Company where he had worked for the past 45 years, at the time of his death. Also, he served in the U. S. Army during World War II, received a Purple Heart and was a Prisoner of War.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Young Dillon of the home; two daughters, Peggy Jones of Clewiston, FL and Kathy Foster of Danville, VA; one step-daughter, Emily Johnson of the home; three sisters, Maggie Dillon and Lucy Moore both of Martinsville, VA and Nancy Cruise of Bassett, VA; two brothers, John Dillon and Pete Dillon both of Martinsville, VA; six grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Old Well Christian Church with Reverend Ann B. Pulley and Reverend Roy Parker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the church and other times at the home of his brother, Pete Dillon, 1179 Spencer Preston Road, Martinsville, VA.

Rachel Washburn Gunter, 93, of Preston Road in Martinsville, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
She was born March 8, 1916, in the Gobblintown section of Patrick County to James Emmett and Stella Minter Washburn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David W. Gunter; four sisters, Helen W. Spencer, Hazel W. Gunter, Lorene W. Smith and Pauline W. Wiggington; and five brothers, Albert Cummings Washburn, John Wilson Washburn, James Francis Washburn, Murray Akers Washburn and Edgar Minter Washburn.
She retired from Pannill Knitting with over 40 years of service and was a long-time member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church.
Surviving are three sisters, Bernice W. Fulcher of Martinsville, Vivian W. Turner of Danville, and Reva W. Hopkins of Patrick Springs; a brother, Troy Nelson Washburn of Knoxville, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Grove Christian Church with the Rev. J. Eldon Morgan and the Rev. Tim Mills officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with a memorial reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at Pleasant Grove Christian Church and other times at the home of her nieces, Kathy and Lea Washburn, 1750 Joseph Martin Hwy., Martinsville.

Clara Belle Hanks, 82, of Collinsville, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

She was born in Patrick County on March 18, 1927, to William Zachariah Gammons and Gatha Bowman Gammons.

MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Mozelle Goins Hawks, 61, of 252 Old Toast Road, Mount Airy, wife of Mr. Ronald Dean Hawks, passed away Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Forsyth Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 24, 1948, in Patrick County, Va., to the late Euel William and Princess Thompson Goins.
She was employed by Renfro Corporation and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

Minnie Wyatt Hunt, 91, of Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart, formerly of Penhook, died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at Blue Ridge Nursing Home.
She was born in Henry County on Jan. 14, 1919, to Thaddeus and Ada Wyatt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Willis Hunt; three sons, Tyrone, Charles, and Bobby Wayne Hunt; four sisters, Allie Ferguson, Edna “Jack” Young, Gertrude Byrd and Laura Janney; and two brothers, Daniel and Jim Wyatt.
She was a member of Sandy Level Baptist Church.

Mrs. Linda A. Jensen, age 61 of Stuart, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at The Brian Center in Fincastle.
She was born in Ames, Iowa on November 22, 1948.
She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Jefferson, and was of the Methodist faith.
Mrs. Jensen is survived by her husband, Chris W. Jensen of the home; three sons, Chris W. Thelbert A. Manns
Thelbert A. Manns, 49, of Bassett, died Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
He was born on May 15, 1960, and was a son of the late James Andrew Manns and the late Loleader Wade Manns.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Regenia Stanley and Debra Manns.
Surviving are three sisters, Cecelia Manns of Bassett, Veronica Wimbush of Patrick County and Gwendolyn Manns of Bassett; three brothers, George Monroe Manns of Bassett, Grant Willis Wade of Bassett and James McArthur Manns of Collinsville; a half brother, Jerry Ross of Ferrum; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Goldie Handy Martin, 88, formerly of 405 Clearview Drive, Martinsville, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at Tony’s Extended Years in Martinsville.
She was born May 18, 1921, in Patrick County to Martin Lewis and Sarah Vipperman Handy.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband George L. Martin in 1985; four brothers, Ray Handy, Willie Handy, Charlie Handy and Herbert Handy; and a sister, Ruby Hayes.
She retired from American Furniture Co. with over 20 years of service. She was a member of Clearview Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Brenda Bollings of Martinsville; three sons, Fred Martin of Martinsville, Paul Martin of Henryville, Ind., and H. Lee Martin of Bowling Green, Ky.; a sister, Ocie Coleman of Richmond; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Bobby Nolen
Mr. Bobby Nolen, age 73 of Memory Lane, Stuart, passed away Monday, February 22, 2010 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
He was born in Patrick County, Virginia on January 10, 1937 to the late Andy Governor Crockett Nolen and Lucy Ann Via Nolen.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Mound, Tommy, and Lonza Nolen, an infant sister, and three sisters, Gracie Penn, Nancy Smith and Corine Helms; and a step-son, Kevin Murray.
He had been a foreman for Ashland Oil Company, and attended Pleasant Ridge Holiness Church.
Mr. Nolen is survived by his wife, Dolores Collins Nolen of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Angelia and Jeffrey Patterson of Twinsburg, Ohio; two sons, Robert Nolen of Seattle, Washington and Lawrence Nolen of Olmsted Township, Ohio; two step sons and daughters-in-law, Robin L. and Deidre Murray of Cleveland, Ohio and Scott and Charlotte Murray of Euclid, Ohio; five grandchildren; two sisters, Minnie Woods of Bassett and Ruth Cromwell of Martinsville; a twin brother, Billie Nolen and his wife, Gloria, and a brother, Johnnie Nolen, all of Hardy, Virginia.

Mr. Robert Everette Pike, age 74 of Mt. Airy passed away at his home Wednesday, February 24, 2010.
Mr. Pike was born in Patrick County on January 16, 1936 to the late Joseph Daniel and Mary Lovill Pike.
He attended Welcome Baptist Church as long as his health permitted.
Mr. Pike is survived by a daughter, Dara Pike; grandchildren, Adriana Velazquez and Kelsey Velazquez all of the home; sister and brother-in-law, Dot and Ramon Simmons of Pilot Mountain; brothers, John and Wayne Pike both of Mt. Ms. Bernice Nichols Prillaman, 69 of Stuart, passed away Saturday morning at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
She was born July 16, 1940 in Patrick County to the late Euel Lester and Maggie Chaney Nichols and was also preceded in death by two brothers; Layton and Milton Nichols.
Ms. Prillaman was of the Brethren Faith and had retired as a data processor for Home Health Care Associates.
Ms. Prillaman is survived by a son; Mr. Danny Lee Prillaman of Martinsville, a daughter; Mrs. Darlene Shelton of Stuart, two grandchildren, one step grandchild, one great granddaughter, and two sisters; Mrs. Louise Colletti of Bassett and Mrs. Era Mae Rakes of Henry, Va.

Wendell H. Purcell Jr., 53, of Bassett, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.
He was born Feb. 5, 1957, in Kentucky to Wendell H. Purcell Sr. of Bassett and Delores Bland Purcell.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Laura Purcell.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are a son, Nathan Purcell of Stuart; one granddaughter; a brother, Luther Albert Purcell of Bassett; a sister, Joyce Hull of Iowa; three nieces and one nephew.

The funeral for Eldean Vernon Shelton, 87, of Lafayette Ave., Martinsville, who died Feb. 23, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville with the Rev. Keith Spangenberg officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

She was born March 10, 1922, in Patrick County to Felix L. and Minnie Nelson Vernon.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Shelton in 1967; a sister, Agnes Tucker; and three brothers, Dennis Vernon, Ralph Vernon and Leonard Vernon.
She graduated from Hardin Reynolds Memorial School in Critz, and in 1941, she was among the second group of women hired by DuPont in Martinsville, where she worked until 1946.
In the 1970s, she became a sales representative for Stanley Home Products in the area.
She had been a member of Villa Heights Baptist Church since December of 1976.
Surviving are a daughter, Connie Boyd of Bassett; two sons, Michael Jack Shelton of Collinsville and Jeffrey Lane Shelton of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruby Clark and Dorothy Shockley, both of Stuart.

Virginia Foster Stowe, of 148 North Avenue, Danville went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. She had been a resident at Roman Eagle Memorial Home for 2 ½ years.
Mrs. Stowe was born November 15, 1917 in Patrick County a daughter of P.C. Foster and Susie Turner Foster and spent her entire life in Danville and Pittsylvania County.
She was married to J. Craig Stowe in 1934 and they celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on October 9, 2009.
Mrs. Stowe was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church for 87 years and in the past years was a Sunday school teacher, worked in the youth department, was a member of the W.C.T.U. and the women's auxiliary. She was a wonderful homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, of the residence; a brother, David Foster and wife, Roberta of Charlottesville and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Paul Foster and a sister, Priscilla Elliott (wife of the late Reverend Garland Elliott).
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, February 26, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. from the First Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Reverend Myron Bruce, the Reverend Joe Beck and the Reverend Timothy Elliott. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.

Okie Orville Turner
Okie Orville Turner, 79, formerly of Fieldale, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville.
He was born January 1, 1931, in Patrick County and was a son of the late Irvin Orrie Turner and Eva Moran Turner.
He was a retired self-employed bricklayer and contractor and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are one son, Barry W. Turner of Bassett; one brother, Eldridge B. "E.B." Turner of Martinsville; and one niece.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Moss officiating. Burial was in Roselawn Burial Park.
Pallbearers were Bill Dollarhite, Roger Dollarhite, Kevin Shepherd, William Peal, Billy Martin and Edsel Corns.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hill Memorial Baptist Church, 2359 Appalachian Drive, Martinsville, Va. 24112.

Sharleen Foley Turner
Sharleen Foley Turner, 82, of Patrick Springs, died Friday, Feb. 19, 2010, at her home.
She was born in Patrick County on Aug. 20, 1927, to Jim Russell and Ollie Mae Crawford Foley.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cleveland Aaron Turner; sister, Louise Turner; and brother, Grady Foley.
She retired from DuPont and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
Surviving are one brother, Harold Foley of Bassett; step-son, Denzil Turner of Patrick Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Ron Peal officiating. Burial will be in the Turner family cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
