I think that this must be your William, but I have tentatively put him as the son of Samuel Bowman of Grayson County, VA.

Have you perhaps run across William Bowman that is the father of Austin Bowman of Patrick County Va? This William has Robert Bowman as his father. So far I have William born abt 1802 and married to Elizabeth "Sally" Thompson. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I descend from Benjamin Johnson and Sally Franklin. Sally is said to be related to Glumdalclitch, aka Mary Franklin. Roderick Shelton stood surety for Benjamin and Sally in 1895 in Patrick County, VA.

Has anyone from Duck Franklin/Shelton line done a yDNA test?

I believe Glumdalclitch was given that name from the popular novel, Gulliver's Travels. At one point she might have done some nursing. The name is not Cherokee because it contains several sounds(ch)that are not found in the Cherokee language. Her son William Duckworth "Duck" Shelton named his own daughter Glumdalclitch (1826-1892) after his mother.

Glumdalclitch also had a son by Soloman Stanton. She had been married to a Franklin. So, she kept her married name and named her son (Duck's half brother) George Washington Franklin. My father's family comes from that line.

I just found the family in the 1940 census in Ancestry.com. It is in the Dan River, Patrick County, 71-3 pg 12.

Zachariah is listed as Marick Hammon (age 33). I tried to correct it, but my computer froze up. The others are:

It sounds like you're more up on this branch than I am at this point. I don't have those specific dates. I've got a little more info and pics on the Barnard siblings who moved to Montana: the Reynolds', Yeatts', James Thomas Barnard, J.T. Winifred Barnard,... my research on my great gramdmother's siblings started when I tried to figure out who the people are in some of the old photo scans I have. The captions refer to people as "Uncle Win", for example. It's an interesting web to untangle, but T.V. Barnard doesn't seem to have been in the Montana group.

I'm still following! Do you have definitive dates of death for Theodore and Ada? The Soc Sec Death Index shows that T.V. died in Jul 1971, Princeton, Mille Lacs, Minnesota. The Minnesota Death Index has 28 Jul 1971 in Insanti, MN. I got his birth dates from those two sources. Did he have a birth certificate or family Bible entry or something, or was the date you have what the family always said?
Do you know where they were in 1940? I haven't been able to find them in the 1940 census.

I'm descended from T.V. Barnard's sister Stella.
Theridas Vera Barnard was born 10 SEPT 1873, in Patrick County, VA. I've got the same date as you for his marriage to Ada Moore.
1900 Census lists him in Hendricks, Indiana with wife Ada and daughters Venice and Laura.
1930 census lists him in Omaha with wife Ada, married daughter Mabel, son-in-law Oliver Wolcott, granddaughter Annabelle Lee Wolcott, and son Woodrow.
I have some pictures from a Barnard family reunion. They're dated 1963, but the reunion must actually have taken place a few years before that, as some of the people in the pictures died before 1963.
They won't let me post links on this board, but a google search for Theridas Vera Barnard should bring up my site, garthhagerman dot com.

There are two Jehu Barnards in this family group. Jehu Osmond Barnard (1877-1961) was married to Virginia Banks. He was the son of Jehu Barnard (1840-1933). It was the elder Jehu who was married to Nancy Wood. T.V. Barnard and J.O. Barnard were brothers.

Dennis Cecil Mabe, 88, of Stuart died Sunday, December 23, 2012, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.

He was born in Lawsonville, N.C., April 2, 1924.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy (Dot) Vernon Mabe; his parents, Lelah and Bertie Mabe; and brothers, Millard and Wayne Mabe.

Dennis is survived by his daughter, Dr. Cheryl Mabe Turner, and husband, John Randolph Turner, of Roanoke; brother, Orville Neal Mabe, and wife, Gracie, of Madison, N.C.; sister-in-law, Peggy Pickard Carter, and husband, Eugene D. Carter, of Greensboro, N.C.; and nephews and nieces: Tim, Mike, Kathy, and Debbie.

Dennis was a man of commitment. He was a veteran of World War II, having served on active duty in the U.S. Navy from April, 1943, through January, 1946, on the mid-class carrier, U.S.S. Cabot. He was a devoted member of Stuart Baptist Church where he was ordained originally as a Deacon in 1978, followed by the designation of Deacon Emeritus in 2005 for his many years of service. For 55 years he was a Mason of Mountain Home Lodge No. 263. In addition, he was the owner and operator of Western Auto on Main Street in Stuart for approximately 30 years—a livelihood he cherished day by day because of the friendships he built year after year.

Family and friends will celebrate his life during his funeral, Thursday, December 27, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Moody Funeral Home, 202 West Blue Ridge Street, Stuart. The Rev. Robert Belcher will officiate. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Mountain Home Lodge No. 263, and Military Rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens.

He was born on February 27, 1923 in Patrick County, and was a son of the late Claude S. Handy and Lillie Mabe Handy.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Harmon Handy; a son, Clarence Lonnie Handy; and brothers, Bernard, Clifford, Hudell, Howard and Harvey Handy.

He was of the Baptist faith and worked for Bassett Mirror in Bassett for over 40 years. He also farmed.

Surviving are his daughters, Bonnie Edmonds of Patrick Springs and Cathy Martin of Collinsville; one son, Daniel Handy of Patrick Springs; two sisters, Mildred Cannaday of Martinsville and Rachel Cannaday of South Carolina; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Norris Funeral Services Stuart Chapel with Sarah Doss officiating. Burial will be at the Handy family cemetery in Patrick Springs.

Mary Ethelene Robertson Walker, 77 of Stuart, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, after a six-year battle with cancer.

She was born in Patrick County on Sept. 14, 1935 to Thomas and Dora Mabe Robertson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Robertson.

She attended Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church.

After retiring from DuPont with 28 years of service, she worked with her husband in farming.

Surviving are her husband of 57 years, James E. Walker of the home; one son, Alex Nunez of Stuart; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Louise Wood of Sandy Ridge, N.C. and Irene Ruffin of Archdale, N.C.

She was born August 13, 1974 in Forsyth County, to Thomas Pack and Barbara JoAnn Pack.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Bertha Lee Pack.

Mrs. Pack is survived by her loving parents; one brother, Scottie Pack and his wife Lora, of King; two sisters, Patsy Spencer and her husband Larry, and Brenda Moorefield, both of King; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is one very special friend, Chick-Chick.

A graveside service for Mrs. Pack will be conducted on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Albion Community Church Cemetery in Westfield with the Rev. Tim Collins officiating. Have been on vacation...sorry for the slow response time. Sorry to say I don't have a copy of the pension request. My info came from very reliable sources and did not obtain a copy on it. One source was from Michelle Burress. She has an extensive webpage of Packs/Delong's over in tazewell...Another was from Jane Warrick...both very good researchers. Both have good info at www.genforum.com on the Pack section: www.genforum.genealogy.com/pack/ John Pack and Delong was in Michelle Burress line and very elusive people...not much info to get but they did find parents were Ormond Delong and Sarah Reed of Montgomery Co., VA. I notice that you mention in your Patrick County, VA posting that James Pack, Jr. was mentioned in the Pension Application of Martha Pack. I know Martha Pack was living in Floyd County, VA after the death of her husband James Pack, Sr. My question is: Do you have a copy of Martha Pack's Pension Application? I am researching Harden and John Pack, who were both born in Patrick Co., VA in early 1800's...both married DeLong girls in Floyd County, VA before moving on to Tazewell County, VA before 1850. I would really like to obtain a copy of Martha Pack's Pension file from her husband's service in the War of 1812. I welcome your reply.

I'm looking for information on my wife's family from Patrick County. My wife's mother was Mallie Mae Bowman (of Patrick Co.) who married Eugene Clifford Emerson (of Surry Co., NC). Mallie's mother was Mathie Ann Bowman the daughter of Rachel Pack and Andrew J. Bowman (married in Patrick County in 1887). Mathie married a Samuel Yancy (?) Bowman. We think that the parents of Rachel Pack were Isham Pack and Mary Ann 'Nancy' Bowman - but we don't know for sure. We would like to find out more about my wife's family in Patrick Co. particularly the heritage of Rachel Pack. We would really appreciate any information that you might have.

visited on Sept 2, 2012 Here r better directions; go on Parkway 6 miles north of Rt 8. turn rt onto Haycock Rd for about a mile turn onto Griffith lane a gravel road, about a mile rd forks go straight, go till you see a sign that says entering Patrick Co leaving Floyd Co, road forks again go straight which will start to descend. u will get to a house on rt where Chris lives, continue till you get 2 an overgrown clearing, u will have 2 make a u turn to get 2 a road that continues 2 descend, the road will pass a pond with camping trailer, follow road till end. there is the cemetery. The road has been graveled all the way 2 cemetery, drive while the ground is dry. Worth the Trip

Dorothy “Dot” Vernon Mabe, 85, of Stuart, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.

She was born in Wilmington, N.C., on Jan. 3, 1927, to Ranie Vernon Pickard.

Her mother preceded her in death.

She was a long-time member of Stuart Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Dennis Cecil Mabe; a daughter, Dr. Cheryl Mabe Turner of Roanoke; a sister, Peggy Pickard Carter of Greensboro, N.C.; two nieces; and two nephews.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Rev. Robert Belcher officiating. Burial will be in Patrick Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends for one hour before the funeral at the funeral home. www.moodyfuneralservices.com

Ralph Brocklet Goins, 82, of Patrick Springs, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart.

He was born in Surry County, N.C., on Feb. 26, 1930, to Jim and Lucy Lawson Goins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gradie Goins.

Surviving are one son, Ricky Goins of Patrick Springs; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three brothers, Glen Goins and Joel Goins, both of Mount Airy, N.C., and Jack Goins.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

I have been in contact with some Ancestry Travis members and I am curious if you have any information on Alec Travis. I cannot find any documentation about him... was he a slave, free-born colored, or Caucasian? I know that many members have identified him in their tree but is it from family history handed-down stories or does documentation exist? Do you have any other information on Martha? How is it that she is a free mulatto in the Census of 1850 & 1860? Any info on her mother, since she was free? Thanks so much. LG.

Ruth Inman Pack, 86, of Ararat, died Sunday, July 29, 2012, at Pioneer Health Services of Patrick County.

She was born Sept. 2, 1925, in Patrick County to Jim and Jenny Willard Inman.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Pack Sr.; a son, Donald Ray Pack; three sisters, Lois Floyd, Iva Collins and Mary Lou Robertson; and two brothers, Curtis and Ernest Inman.

Pack retired from Bassett-Walker and attended Danube Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Shirley Royall of Stuart; one son, LeRoy Pack Jr. of Ararat; one granddaughter; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sally Rorrer and Annie Goode, both of Woolwine; one brother, James Inman of Martinsville; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart with the Revs. Fred Gilley and Paul Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Locust Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
