Just a note about your comment above:

"I see where William Hooper(apparently a brother of Rebecca Hooper) was accused of murdering Edward Cox."

The William Hooper you mention WAS a brother to Rebecca (Hooper) Cox Maxey. The evidence is in the 1847 will of Mrs. Nancy (Hooper) Ferguson of Cumberland County, Virginia. She, of course, was a sister to Rebecca and William Hooper. In her will, she both named her sister, AND mentions

"To a nephew James Hooper Son of William Hooper of Alabama the remaining part."

Census records show this nephew James Hooper was born about 1807/8 in Virginia; he later lived in Limestone County in 1830 to at least 1835, and then in Greene County, Alabama in 1850 and 1860.
Re: 1880 - Albert H. Cox

Shirley....I show that Albert H. (Henry) Cox was a son of Edward Cox and Rebecca Hooper, and a grandson of a Mathew/Matthew Cox (of Buckingham Co., VA). Do you agree with that? I see where William Hooper(apparently a brother of Rebecca Hooper) was accused of murdering Edward Cox.

I show that Albert H. Cox and Elizabeth Amos had many children, with one of them being Edward Henry Cox. Edward Henry Cox married Margaret Crump, and they had Henry Thomas Cox, Joseph Edward Cox and James Robert Cox. The 1930 Manchester City (now Richmond/Chesterfield Co., VA) census showed the widow (apparently) Margaret/Margarette (Crump) Cox as the head of her household, and living with her were her sons Joseph and James. Shown living next to them was Margaret's third son Henry Thomas Cox, and Henry's wife Sadie (Sadie Sydnor, per some information that I found on the internet). Henry and Sadie's children at that time in the home were Richard, Edward and Raymond Cox (age 7). It appears that Henry and Sadie also had a daughter who was named Evelyn Cox (though she was not in the referenced home in 1930). I believe that the son named Raymond Cox was the man who ran the Esso service station at the corner of Westover Hills Blvd and Forest Hill Avenue (I was reared in that area).

Albert H. Cox and Elizabeth Amos apparently had additional sons (in addition to the above Edward) who were named Henry, James, John and Albert. Do you have any information on them? One reason that I ask is that there was a William T. Cox (age 35) who was on the 1880 census in the Henrico/Richmond, VA area, and he was married to a Sadie. Two of their daughters were Estella/Stella Cox and Birdie (shown as "Birtie" in 1880) Windall Cox. Stella married a George Paul, and in 1900, that George Paul and his family was also living in Manchester City....and Stella's sister Birdie Windall Cox was living with them.

Birdie married James Augustus Davidson, Senior around 1904/1905, and he became the Mayor of Farmville, VA (Prince Edward Co., VA) for one term around 1920 or so (and he also owned a store in that area). I am good friends with a granddaughter of James Augustus Davidson, Senior and Birdie Windall Cox, via their daughter Frances Davidson (who married James L. Brown).

I wonder if the above William T. Cox was a grandson of Albert H. Cox and Elizabeth Amos (via one of those several OTHER sons)....versus if there was/is no "blood relationship" here? Any/all information on the possible ancestry of the above William T. Cox would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Bill

P. S. DANCE advertises Powhatan County farm, 1864

Hi,

I just posted an old ad for a farm in Powhatan County, Virginia. Names mentioned include P. S. DANCE (in Midlothian, Chesterfield County, Virginia) and H. C. GRAVES (who could be found in the town of Powhatan Court House, Virginia). Since the Civil War was in progress, I suspect they faced a REALLY bad real estate market at the time!
This was scanned from an original issue (NOT microfilm!) of The Richmond Whig newspaper (Richmond, Virginia) dated January 7, 1864, and you can see it online here:

http://theoldentimes.com/psdance01071864powva.html
I hope it's helpful!

Barbara
http://theoldentimes.com/old_news_va.html
http://theoldentimes.com/ads.html
http://theoldentimes.com
Just a quick correction: Richard Netherland Jr. and Catherine Rogan's youngest child, Martha b. 1840 DID NOT DIE AS AN INFANT. She is my ancestor. She grew up and married (VERY young) to Charles Powell. They had six children before her death in 1869 in Marion county, MO.
My line is through their daughter Matilda Catherine Powell who married James Alva Bottoms.

Hampstead...village or plantation...where was it?

I'm following up two leads, both pertaining to Dudley Ragland, who was attached to the large Ragland clans of Hanover, Louisa, and Goochland Counties. First in 1801 in a deed, and then in 1805 in an insurance policy (and both times for a Goochland County property), Dudley Ragland named his residence as "Hampstead," in Powhatan County. Given where Ragland ended up in Goochland, my best guess is that Hampstead was in the NW portion of Powhatan and near the James River. To date, though, I can find no reference to a property by that name in Powhatan. Other Hampstead plantations existed in VA at the time, one in New Kent, and another in Caroline.

Another possibility was that Hampstead was a property associated with the Cocke family of Surry and Fluvanna--the latter being the Bremo plantation. Dudley Ragland was an overseer for the Cockes in this location about the time of these two documents.

My other guess is that Hampstead was a village in Powhatan vs. a property. Either way, I'm at sea as far as just where this was. Can anyone help?

David Fletcher
Richmond, VA

I printed out a paper copy of his death certificate today at the Library of VA, and would be happy to send you a copy by email or snail mail.
I am researching the african american Hicks family of Powhatan
Virginia. I looking for any connection of slave owner or plantation that Holman Hicks prior to 1870. Holman was born approx. 1808 and 1883 in Powhatan, Va. In 1870, a white man named William Noble lived on his property.
This is tremendous. Thank you and I will check out those mines. I am from Ohio and was in the area of Palmyra and the Bremo Plantation earlier this year. I know Pleasant was from that area, so maybe this will help put me on the correct track.

He probably worked at the mines at Manakin Town. That would be close to Jefferson.
You'll find historical documents on early Manakin mines online. Many Huguenot families in the area are well documented and include references to the mines on their websites.

I think Jefferson is near the intersection of Route 711 (Huguenot Trail) and Route 522 (Maidens Road).
I don't know how far people traveled to work in the mines in 1870. It's possible that he work at Midlothian. There were other mines in the area too.
Are you familiar with the area?

Looking at the 1870 census and I see a Huguenot Township with the post office listed as Jefferson. Does anyone have an idea of where exactly this would have been? My g-g-grandfather worked in a coal pit in that area...would that have been the Midlothian Mines or some other entity. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Mr. Maxey,

Interested to see your inquiry of the Rocky Oak Church, I currently attend the church weekly so it is alive and well. We also have a program of the Bicentennial celebration in July 31 1949 and also have a copy of a handwritten history of Rocky Oak Church done for the Centnennial celebration in 1914. There were many Maxey names mentioned in both. Any
info you have would be appreciated.
I am trying to find info on my grandfather James Kelly Adams (1900-1976) and his father Sydney Johnson Adams (1865-1910). We know he was adopted but that is about all we know. He believed he was born in Smyth County, but I do not feel confident about that. At this point I am just trying to track them down in SW VA.
Any info on either/both would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Reply Report Abuse Print

This is really a wonderful service by the Library of Virginia. As many times as I've been to the Library, as many trips as I've made to various Virginia courthouses,
I never was aware of this digital collection. Powhatan County is just the latest one added.

Thanks to the library staff for doing this!

Powhatan County Chancery Causes

The Library of Virginia (LVA) is pleased to announce the completion of another digital scanning project. The processing, indexing, and digital reformatting of the Powhatan County chancery causes is now complete. The images have been added to the existing index on the newly redesigned Chancery Records Index (CRI) which is now located on the Library’s home for digital collections, Virginia Memory. The Powhatan County chancery images date between 1782 and 1929 (The index of cases covers the years 1782 through 1938). This locality joins twenty-seven counties and cities whose chancery causes have been digitally reformatted and made available through the Library’s innovative Circuit Court Records Preservation Program, which seeks to preserve the historic records of Virginia’s Circuit Courts. The indexes and images can be found at the following link. http://www.virginiamemory.com/collections/chancery/

To date, The Library of Virginia has posted over 4.8 million digital chancery images for forty-four localities. Several localities are presently being scanned and will be posted in the coming months. Please see the Chancery Records Index for a listing of the available locality chancery collections.

Chancery causes are cases that are decided on the basis of equity and fairness as opposed to the strictly formulated rules of common law cases. Chancery cases are especially useful when researching local history, genealogical information, and land or estate divisions. They are a valuable source of local, state, social, and legal history and serve as a primary source for understanding a locality’s history. Chancery causes often contain correspondence; property lists, including slaves; lists of heirs; and vital statistics, along with many other records. Some of the more common types of chancery causes involve divisions of the estate of a person who died intestate (without a will); divorces; settlements of dissolved business partnerships; and resolutions of land disputes.

If you have any comments, questions, or corrections regarding the CRI or scanned images, please contact chancery@lva.virginia.gov.

1880 - Albert H. Cox

I am looking for any and all information on Albert H. Cox.

He was married to Elizabeth Amos. The lived a "stones throw" away from the Amos' in Powhatan. John Calhoon Amos, Jr. was Elizabeth Amos' brother.

The Cox family had many children. Albert Cox lost a lot during the Civil War. I believe he and his wife migrated to somewhere. I have taken the 1880 census 1890 census line by line...

Please help. Thank you.

Shirley Cox Schroeder

FYI-Powhatan was not formed until 1777. Manakin Towne and Subletts tavern were originally in Cumberland Co but now are in Powhatan on modern day Rt 711 also know as Hugeunot Trail. There are several old churches in that area with French names in the cemetaries. If he died in 1754 within 10 miles of Manakin Towne, he is now in Powhatan.
