I ran across a John Scott in my reading:
Partisans & Redcoats; the southern conflict that turned the tide of the American Revolution. By Walter Edgar. page14.
Has one mention of "John 'Ready Money' Scott, a merchant in the Savannah River Valley, was attacked in his home". This was around the time of 1766 in SC. South Carolina has many Scots-Irish settlers coming from Ireland, Pennsylvania, VA and NC. Maybe this guy is a relative of the John Smith you are interested in pursuing? Let me know. I also, have some Scotts in my public tree.
