I am doing research on a possible ancestor....name of William Vaughn, born in Russell County 1789 as listed on this genealogy site:
http://timcdfw.com/genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I371&amp...

his parents are listed as William Vaughn of Wales, and Fereby Benton a Cherokee Indian. I am trying to ascertain literally any thing, as he may have moved to Burke County North Carolina in the 1800s, or that may be a totally different William Vaughn.

also contact me at angkorday2 at yahoo dot com. many thanks!

Just found another little hint I thought I'd add:

Kevin Daniel states that he believes Margaret's maiden name might have been Riley, because two of his confirmed sons gave their sons that middle name.

Just realized that Caroline Braton Gibson (a possible daughter) also gave a son that middle name:

William Riley Vivian, b. 7 Sep 1852, Goliad, Goliad, TX.

Caroline Braton Gibson's parents are very likely John T. Gibson and Margaret "Peggy" Givens. The question remains, is John T. Gibson the same person as Tryon Gibson?

My entering grant data for land grants issued for what is now Washington, Lee, Scott and Russell Counties, is only about 50% complete. It's a work-in-progress, and my mapping tends to only cover localities that I am interested in. So it may never be 100% complete.

Nonetheless, there are many thousands of names/dates/places entered to date. So I hope to post an everyname index by the end of the summer. I will also post info on how to obtain a printed plat map for each name you indicate. Due to the voluminous time that has gone into entering and plotting this data, and the resources needed to generate/print the maps, it will be a fee-for-service.

I will post the info when it is available to this board and several others. I also hope to have much of the index and some of the plats on a web site by then. Stay tuned.

See attached images, for my WAG [maybe not .. time will tell] on the location of Glade Hollow Fort. There is a 1958 era topo map with a number of my Deedmapper grant plots in that area superimposed on it, with verifiable anchor points.

You will note the supposed fort site is highlighted by an arrow on the graphic image. I believe it was sited on a slight eminence which is now on the northwest side of the entrance area to Technology Drive in Lebanon. The second image reveals shows the satellite view of this side of the main street on the east side of Lebanon. Regrettably, it also shows there is a commercial building of some type right on that location. This presents some challenges to further verification, since it is no longer farm land.

My reasoning for this location takes into account a number of factors: the available historical writings, the topography, and the tactics and nature of Indian warfare, and the location of the land grants. Interestingly, the spot is not right on the Robert Dale -> William Gilmer grant, but is next to it, and lies within an acceptable range of error for surveying accuracy at the time.

The longer blue line radiating from the fort towards just west of South, that points to a high point on a ridge, is gauged within the deedmapping softare at 3/4 a mile. That should be ring a bell, to anyone familiar with Carr's account.

The attached plot map is the result of nearly a week's research, data entry, and plot alignment. Yes, it probably does not reflect every grant on the outer edges. But there are enough of them to show that the area that is now Lebanon, was clearly considered to be "Glade Hollow" at the time and at least into the 1790s. Several other grants outside the size of the image, also confirm this, which date back into the early 19th century.

I am not familiar with local history and lore thereabouts. So I don't know when the local inhabitants first distinguished between the town, and the part of the "modern" Glade Hollow which lies just northwest of the the area depicted in the images. This "modern" Glade Hollow was apparently part of the basin enclosed 1) on the north by Copper Ridge, 2) on the south by knobs of Moccasin Ridge and on the east by the "big" Cedar Creek.

Note: As mentioned in another of my posts, I have entered upwards of 20,000 grants and patents into my Deedmapper data files, over the past 20 years. I have had considerable experience with coming to understand the issues of instrument and human error, and the difficulties of projecting measurements taken in three-dimensional terrain, onto two-dimensional maps. (Well, Dorothy, you're not in (flat) Kansas anymore when you arrive in the colonies!)

I use Direct Line Software's Deedmapper.

It's a "labor of love" {emphasis on LABOR} for my genealogical research. Many counties of SW Va are completed in whole or part. So it's a work-in-progress, but is useful as is.

One or more images are attached to illustrate what it looks like, on several levels.

There are tens of thousands of names/dates/places, etc. Given the amount of effort required to accomplish this, it likely will only be available on a fee-for-service basis.

I will post more info about an index of names, and how to obtain color copies. This will probably be on the main board. Possibly within next six months or so.

I have no information behind the locating of the highway marker on Rt 71. But I don't believe that's where the fort was specifically sited.

My "presentation" on it is beyond the scope of a email forum. It will require me at least several pages to cover. I hope to get around to writing up where I believe on-the-ground researchers might {? -- i.e. logs rot} find some evidence of it. Until then, I will say that Glade Hollow is the right section of the ballpark.

Thank you for the correction. I agree, the David Calhoun survey was mis-read. Would you agree, however, that the other clues mentioned in the post would indicate that the fort was more likely located in Glade Hollow proper, rather than on route 71 west of Lebanon where the state marker was located. Specifically:

-Gen. Dale’s statement that his family moved to the “forks of the Clinch” and built the stockade fort along with neighbors, one of which was David Calhoun
- Dale’s statement that the Elk Garden fort was 10 miles to the south from the Glade Hollow fort
- Benjamin Sharp’s statement that Elk Garden fort was “10 miles higher up the country” and his mention of the salt petre cave which fits the topography, as does Isaac Crabtree’s mention of the sinkholes along the trace.
I was surfing the web regarding Glade Hollow recently, and came across your thesis on the location of Glade Hollow fort.

Based on years of entering over 10,000 VA land patents and grants into mapping software, I have had considerable experience in reading these document images (from LVA).

Your assumption that Calhoun's last bound says "to the FORT Station" is incorrect. The reference that surveyors used on many of the surveys for what they call the "Closing Line" is as follows: "... to the first Station" (The first Station -- not Fort Station -- refers to the beginning point from which the survey lines were run.)

I don't have obit, but have cemetery stone dates from Temple Hill if you need them. We included the William F. Kasefang family in Holbrook on the Clinch since his wife, Mary Maude Minton, was a Holbrook descendant. Can help on that line. maxervin at verizon dot net

I only have that she died in 1890 in Harrison, Kandiyohi, Minnesota and that she lived in Carter co., KY in the 1870s. I have her parents as Michael Lark and Nancy Duncan, however I don't have proof on her death and parents' names. Does your chart list these same parents as well? I would love to see the Lark family chart. Is there any way you could scan it or email it to me? Let me know and I will give you my email address! Thanks

Weazel9, have you learned anything else about Martha? I was recently going thru some old papers a few days ago and came across an old family chart that I received in 1997 from a Lark cousin. He said he got his info from the oldest Lark relatives he could find when he made the chart. The chart showed Martha as having married an unknown Harris. I know its not much but could be a clue that we are on the right track.

Bob

I am looking for information on Isaac Smith who was from Shenandoah county, born around 1757, he came with his wife(we think a Frankie (Frances) Childers, or Sproules, and our family records report that Isaac died in your county in or around 1801. The Smiths had children, William, Nancy, Melvina, Rachel, John H. His widow then married a John Kelley. We don't know if he was from your county, or not, they then moved to Kentucky, where we pick them up. I would appreciate any information you have on this family.

In looking back at census records for Michael Lark who married Nancy Duncan, I realized I probably have miscalculated his year of birth as ca 1790. I believe it should be closer to 1784 instead. He and Nancy (at abt age 16/17) COULD have married as early as ca 1808/1809. Peggy

Does anyone have substantiated concrete Proof that Hopkins Richardson, living in Russell County Virginia, actually married Mary Davis? I am wondering if Mary Davis was a widow and that is not her maiden name. This is based on a Samuel Davis, 3 years old, living with Hopkins and Mary Richardson in the 1850 census. I cannot find a single child's birth/death of Hopkins and Mary with the mother's maiden name listed, unless Mary was also born a Richardson (which is possible but not confirmed).

Please respond if you have knowledge of the marriage of Hopkins and Mary Richardson.

I just got Squire's death certificate - sorry it took so long! Squire's mother was indeed "Martha W Lark" (at least it looks like a 'W' to me). It says that she was born in West Virginia, although I'm sure that could mean the Russell county area as well. Squire's father was Johnson Harris, born in North Carolina and Squire was born in Virginia. Squire's wife, Sarah, was the informant for this information. Let me know if you need more info from the certificate. Thanks!

Yes, I will contact you through your e-mail address. I mentioned the information Jerry Penley posted, but forgot that it was posted on Genforum, not on this list. For anyone who wants to see his post, you can go to the Lark Family Forum and put "Penley" in the search box and find it.

*****
A little while ago I posted this on GenForum:

Based on the Lark/Larch information posted by Jerry Penley which he found in "History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri" we have this:
John Larch/Lark of Pennsylvania (the patriarch). Children:
1) Christopher - settled on Clinch River in VA
2) Joseph - killed at battle of Tippecanoe
3) Michael - settled on Clinch River
4) John - m. Margaret Long of MD & had 10 children
5) Barbara
6) Jane

Some observations in trying to establish years of birth:
1) In 1820 Christopher Lark was living in Russell Co, VA. He was already aged over 45 on this census, so was born bef. 1775.
2) The battle of Tippecanoe occurred in Nov 1811, so that is when Joseph Lark died. Born when?
3) Michael Lark Sr. on the 1820 Russell Co, VA was aged 26-45, so was born between 1775-1794. I believe he was too young to be the s/o John (the patriarch). Possibly the older Michael was already deceased by 1820...? He would have to be born before abt 1772 to be the father of Michael Lark (b. 1790) who married Nancy Duncan.
4) John's sons: Daniel b. ca 1798 VA was on the 1850 Montgomery Co, MO census and Joseph b. ca 1800 VA was on the 1860 Callaway Co, MO census. One family tree has John Lark b. ca 1765 and this is probably about right.

There are two identifiable children of Christopher Lark:
1) Michael Lark b. 1789 who married Elizabeth Breeding first. After Elizabeth died, Michael married 2nd on 26 Aug 1863 in Scott Co, VA to May A. E. Noles. The marriage record states that Chris & Elizabeth Lark were Michael's parents

2) Catherine Spurgin, wife of Samuel Spurgin, d. on 23 Feb 1853 in Russell Co, VA. Her death certificate says she was b. 1794 in Pennsylvania and was a d/o Christopher & Elizabeth Lark.

**********

Thanks for your reply! I will contact you right away on e-mail. Peggy

Peggy: I have some Lark family info gathered , by my uncle Virgil Lark, many years ago from some of the then older members of the Lark family. You say Michael and Nancy had 10 children and I see where you are coming from. The older Larks mentioned above only provided 8 names. I am a direct descentant through Michael and Nancy,s son Alexander b 1832. I would really enjoy seeing what you have found on the Lark family as well as the Jesse Duncan family.
Thank you for your interest! It's been a few weeks, but I was studying the two Michael Larks and their families to determine who belongs to whom. I've been trying to refresh my memory before I answer this, but here goes. I believe the following census records are my Michael Lark who married Nancy Duncan:

1820 Russell Co, VA
p. 16 (147)(384), line 24 Michael Lark 100010-30010
male b. 1775-1794 Michael (26-45) b. 1790
female b. 1775-1794 Nancy (26-45) b. 1792
female b. 1810-1820 Polly ( u 10) b. ca 1812
male b. 1810-1820 Francis ( u 10) b. ca 1816
female b. 1810-1820 unknown ( u 10) b. ca 1818?
female b. 1810-1820 unknown ( u 10) b. ca 1820?
(Mary "Polly" Plumtree living in Michael & Nancy's 1850 hh)

1830 Russell Co, VA
p. 158, line 2 Michael Lark 0012001-120101
male b. 1780-1790 Michael (40-50) b. 1790
female b. 1790-1800 Nancy (30-40) b. 1792
female b. 1810-1815 Polly (15-20) b. ca 1812
male b. 1810-1815 unknown (15-20) (a spouse of Polly?)
male b. 1810-1815 Francis (15-20) b. ca 1816
female b. 1815-1820 unknown (10-15) b. ca 1818
female b. 1820-1825 unknown ( 5-10) b. ca 1820
male b. 1820-1825 Michael ( 5-10) b. ca 1822
female b. 1825-1830 Nancy ( u5 ) b. ca 1830
(I originally thought the other Michael Lark census in Russell County was my Michael who m. Nancy Duncan, but after comparing with the 1820 and 1840 census records I believe this is the correct one for my Michael.)

1840 Russell Co, VA
p. 7, line 25 Michael Lark 01000001-0010001
male b. 1780-1790 Michael (50-60) b. 1790
female b. 1790-1800 Nancy (40-50) b. 1792
female b. 1825-1830 Nancy (10-15) b. ca 1830
male b. 1830-1835 Alexander( 5-10) b. ca 1832

I am pretty solid on my belief that Polly b. ca 1812, and Nancy b. ca 1830, are their daughters due to the 1850 census records. So that leaves two daughters b. 1815-1820 still unidentified.

I have looked at Sarah A. Lark who married Samuel Spurgeon and moved to Indiana, and think she MIGHT be the female b. 1818, but I'm not sure. So please don't take this and run with it without more proof!

Let's not forget that there was also Christopher Lark on the 1820 Russell Co, VA census. Some of these stragglers could be his descendants. His household was this: 200001-00301
male b. bef 1775 Christopher (over 45)
female b. bef 1775 (over 45)
female b. 1794-1804 (16-26)
female b. 1794-1804 (16-26)
female b. 1794-1804 (16-26)
male b. 1810-1820 ( u 10)
male b. 1810-1820 ( u 10)

Also, don't forget the information posted by Jerry Penley which he found in "History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri" According to information there, the Lark/Larch family would look like this:
John Larch of Pennsylvania (patriarch). Children:
1. Christopher - settled on Clinch River in VA (I believe father of Michael who married Elizabeth Breeding)
2. Joseph - killed at battle of Tippecanoe (Nov 1811)
3. Michael - settled on Clinch River in VA (I believe father of Michael who married Nancy Duncan)
4. John (b. 1770's)- m. Margaret Long of MD & had 10 children (including Daniel b. ca 1798 & Joseph b. ca 1800)
5. Barbara
6. Jane

So, to get back to your post, I am inclined to think that Martha Lark who married Johnson Harris is NOT a d/o Michael Lark who married Nancy Duncan. I realize other people may strongly disagree, but that is okay. We just need to work together to find proof! :)

Have a great day!
Peggy
Thank you for the advice. I know now that half of the researchers are living in the dark ages. They took the information in Norris Combs' Book as the Bible for the Combs' families. Even Norris or his nephew said take the information with a grain of salt. Other wise you must research what you find. Chapter XX is the best example. William Combs 1740 - 1815 son of Mason Combs is NOT THE FATHER OF William Combs 1777 -1841. From the Combs $Etc research group with my writing included.
Before you read the following; ask yourself if your believe in DNA testing can solve crime. If not do not read the following; if you do believe in DNA testing to solve crimes read on. A crime has been committed against Sarah Ann Million Combs by saying Mason Combs' son William Combs 1740 - 1815 is the husband of Sarah Ann and the Father of William Combs 1777 - 1841.

There is a misconception that William Combs 1740 - 1815 Son of Mason Combs was the Father of William Combs 1777 - 1841 who married Anna Thompson. This error in thinking came from the Combs Book in 1976 only to be corrected in 1996 after researchers found the pension papers of Sarah Ann Million Combs. Sarah stated that her husband died in 1780 from wounds received at the Battle of Brandywine. She was married only once and her son was living in Russell County Virginia. He was born in the year 1777.

Combs &c. Research Footnotes for
"The Combes Genealogy" by Josiah H. Combs
See Special Copyright Restrictions Chapter XX, William Combs, of Russell County, Va. (pp. 108-117)

Page 108. 1. There is a serious error in this chapter; i.e., William COMBS, Jr., b 11 Jan 1777, Stafford Co, VA, d 1841, Russell Co, VA; m Anna THOMPSON (d/o William and Nancy JACKSON Thompson) was not the s/o William & Seth STACY Combs (s/o Mason& Sarah Combs, Sr.), b 28 Nov 1740, Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co, VA, but instead the s/o William& Sarah Ann MILLION Combs, Sr. of Stafford Co, VA. Also note, however, that William COMBS, s/o Mason, was also in Russell Co, VA - as were numerous other early COMBS, and that confusion has raged rampant for years among researchers as to Who's on First.

As noted by the author, the lineage in this chapter was furnished by Frederick Harmon Combs who was not a Russell Co, VA COMBS, and that some of this lineage (in addition to corrections noted herein and/or lineages as documented in the above William COMBS, Jr. report) is incorrect and that additional footnotes will be provided shortly.

Scientific proof came in 2008 with the genetic dna profiles of the descendants of Mason Combs being compared to the genetic dna profiles of descendants of William 1771 - 1841. The results showed that Mason and William Combs 1777 - 1841 were not related. In April 2012 a descendant of the youngest Son Cullen Combs of William and Anna Thompson Combs was tested with Ancestry DNA and Family Tree. The results matched the testing in 2008 and the conclusion was that Mason's son William Combs 1740 - 1815 dna and William Combs 1777 - 1841 dna do not match each other. Simply put, if you descend from Wiliam Combs 1777 - 1841 you do not descend from William Combs 1740 - 1815 and his Father Mason Combs. This would also include Archdale Combs, the Jamestown Combs, and the rest of the English Combs.
Hope this helps. Sarah Ann Million Combs is buried in Edgar Co. Illinois just thirty five miles from my home.
John Hamilton and Doris Hamilton part of the original researchers finding the error in Chapter XX johnmh44@yahoo.com

My Samuel was definitely born in Scott or Russell County, VA. My greatgrandmother had an old family bible that traces the line back to Thomas Vaughan who was in Southhampton Co., VA in 1620. I saw it when I was in high school, but don't know what happened to it when Grandma died. Good luck on your search

Do you think Samuel could have been born in Wales? We are looking for siblings of my great-great grandfather William Vaughan. He had an older brother Samuel born in 1799. Our William came to the Staes in 1839 along with a brother David. They both settled in Norristown, PA, but it is reported that several other brothers came to the States but "went South"( according to an account by an aunt of my father's).
I wondering if your ggg grandfather could be the son of the Samuel in our family.
Have you looked at Welsh records?

I am researching Ezekiel Patrick born in 1759 possibly in Bladen,NC and moved through South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia and finally into Ky. He had a son Daniel Patrick who was born about 1810 possibly in Tenn.also a daug Elizabeth Patrick-Hall born close to the same time. Ezekiel came to Pery,Co.Ky about 1826 and the last I can find a record of him is in Clay Co.Ky in 1850 He also speaks of bro's William, Daniel and Samuel in a war pension application. Any info.would be appreciated. Thanks

If you are still looking - I believe John Robinson was the son of Jacob Robinson of White TN.
The best evidence is a recollection by a local woman in VA, who says that Jacob's son John Married "Carolina Louisa Otey" (posted on my online tree)

Jacob Robinson Birth abt 1770 in NC vs SC
Death 01 Jul 1828 in White, Tennessee, USA
Father: William Robinson (1734-1804)
Mother: Charity Kennedy
Spouse: Mary (Poly) Kelly vs Colwell

Children:
Edith (Eady) Robinson (1790-)
Margaret Robinson (Dyer) (1794-1871)
James Robinson (1794-)
Reuben F.
Newest info I have found on Elihue Brown and 1st wife Celie Turner. I ran accross their divorce in Russell Co Va saying he was an abusive husband. He went to Celie's mothers (Nancy)house to bring her Celie back home and shot Nancy in the arm. Celie did go back with him but soon left again and got a divorce. They were only married about a year. They had a daughter that I think was raised by Nancy. In the 1910 census she lived with her grandmother and it looked like her name was Loney Brown, hard to make out. In 1920 still could not make out the name but was listed as daughter to Nancy and her last name was the same as Nancy's. I am writing this from memory so there could be some mistakes, it has been awhile sence I worked on this family. Any knowledge of this child would be helpful and grateful.
