I dont know if this is much help but I am wondering if the John Collins listed on the 1850 census is Matildas son and not her husband. He is 19 years younger than her and the oldest child in 1850 is 22. Way to young to be her father.

Sue

I have them in my family tree and I'm afraid I won't be much help. Actually hoping since your post is several years old you have something new you can pass along to me.

I have John as John W Collins (1798-1850) born and died in VA. His parents I have as Patrick Collins (1750-1822 of Ireland) and Mary Cavenaugh (1765-1859)

On Matilda I have her maiden name as Gibson and her birth as being about 1803 in NC. Again, not much to go on but maybe you have more now. Thanks!

I'm very happy to hear from you.

Jonathan Olinger and Mary Lowder were my 2G Grandparents. I traced my mother's family back to this couple, who were unknown to any of our living relatives. Then I found (what I think is your work) going back even further, which is what I quoted in this Ancestry post.

I've not been able to make a trip down to Scott County to continue my search in documenting earlier generations, which I am very interested in doing. I look upon the research as others to give me guidance in where to look for the documentation to prove the connections. For instance, what proof exists for the parents of Jonathan?

I'd like to talk further with you if you'd contact me off-list at stokesy48 (use the at sign) yahoo (use a period) com.

Linda

I've conducted extensive research on the Ohlinger/Olinger family/families of Scott County, Virginia for the past thirty years. I will be glad to answer any questions or inquiries that you may have regarding these families. JOHAN JACOB OHLINGER/OLINGER, JR. and his wife KATHARINA MAUKMORE OLINGER relocated to Scott Co., VA in the mid-1830's, as did some of their married children and their families. Their youngest son, JONATHAN OLINGER, remained in Wythe County, VA until circa 1853 when he relocated to Smyth County, VA. JONATHAN OLINGER and his wife MARY LOWDER were my great-great-great grandparents.

Jerry Olinger

As a result of 2, I trust long standing family stories corroborated by similar family stories of a different branch of the family far more than Wiki or Google, etc. Documentation IS needed eventually, but sometimes you have to start somewhere in order to know what paths to investigate.

As to 1, and this is where I finally get to the point, my very first reference research at the ripe old age of 15 showed that the family motto of the Hensley family of HENSLEIGH House in England was "Lictum Vitae" (sp?) or Tree of Life, after the family crest of a beech tree. A coincidance over 200 years old? Unfortunately I was a teenager more interested in the information I could present to my father in an effort to impress, than in writing down the source information from that library reference book. This is a sad fact that as a famioy history researcher I OFTEN regret.

The point of all of this is: Can I prove the connection? No. Do I believe enough that there IS a connection strong enough to keep investigation? Hell yes.

BTW, I do have a text copy of the will of Maxfield Henslee (or Hensley) who was born around 1725, which mentions at least some of his children at the time of his death so I agree that documentation far outweighs "they said so."

Maybe whoever originally "said so" was too young at the time to think of writing down their sources, which were then lost to time in favor of other exploits.

We can only hope that someone of us as conciencious as you will someday rediscover their (and my) forgotten sources and share them with us.

Your post incourages us to keep holding out for that higher standard.
Scott

I became interested in the history of the HENSLEE family listenting to my father and his mother talk about some of my ancesters they remembered when I was just 14 or 15 (which goes back over 50 years)

We lived in South Carolina across the river from Augusta Georgia at the time and I remember going to the Augusta library looking through reference books that contained what scetchy information I could find on the Hensleys/Henslees.

At a much earlier age I remember two things passed down in our family from "Granny."

1. Daddy was always told as a boy that if he ever had a question he couldn't answer, then the answer to any such question was always "lignumvitie." This was, in his mind, always a nonsense word that ment 'don't worry about it.'

2. The biggest family legend in our family was that our branch of the family, back in the day, was originally HENSLEY, and we had split from them in a family feud and were thereafter HENSLEEs. We left them in Georgia and moved to North Carolina, but later were driven out by indians after one of them killed the chief's son who was 'liberating' one of the family pigs. Later research on my part showed that our family had moved to Georgia from North Carolina (and apparently back). My father's later conversation with a member of the Hensley bunch showed that they had been told the same story by their grandfather about an incident that had happened over 150 years before.

(I ramble too long to get it in ONE post so the continuation isin anotherpost.)

I hope this post is received in the manner it is being submitted. Am I alone with the concern that the HENSLEIGH connection from the USA back to England has no documentation? Today I requested a source for the submission of Walts De HENSLEIGH's connection to the USA HENSLEY from an Ancestry submitter and the response was that the source was "Bing and Google". All I had to do was Google the name and that was the documentation? My case is that I can document my HENSLEYS back to 1782 in North Carolina. But no further, because such documentation is lacking, i.e., no wills, land records, lawsuits, etc. So how does one prove their connection to Walts De HENSLEIGH or any other HENSLEY across the "pond" when there is no documentation? Just wondering if I have any support on this issue? Lastly, when I see a submission of children born in the 1700, 1600, or 1500's and the only claim for parentage is that "they were the son/dau of xxx", it makes me wonder if the claim is true. I welcome any supporting evidence that shows HENSLEIGH connected to our HENSLEYS in the USA. Sherry I just re-read my post and maybe I should clarify. I am not doubting the records of the HENSLEIGHS that have been located in England - it is evident they lived there. My concern is the documentation of their connection to our NC VA and KY HENSLEYs.

I am attempting to research Bettie Compton (alternate names Elizabeth or Eliza). She had a daughter Florence who married William Porter. I am wondering if there are any possible records on Bettie. If she married or when she possibly passed. The closest I have come in locating her was on the 1880 Census, but she is listed as Eliza Cumton (it might be a misspelling on the census) Her age is listed as 40

I am also curious about Henry Porter, he died in Sept of 1929 at the age of 101, but I have been unable to locate any documents on him.

If you or anyone can fill these two blanks I would be most appreciative.

I have not found any connection to the Lewis and Gilliams have any Native American blood in their line, but that does not mean it doesnt exist. I am concerned about this info that William/Nancy and Thomas/Elizabeth were sons of Griffith lewis. other than the will that mentions sons William and Thomas (of which there were quite a few) what other connection have you made with him. My line is Elizabeth Anne Lewis who married James Head in scott co. va. She was the daughter of Thomas Lewis and Elizabeth Gilliam of scott co. va. James and Annes daughter Alsey Head is living with Thomas Lewis in 1850. Some people mistakenly list her as Thomas Lewis wife, she is not. I am trying to establish the children of Thomas and Elizabeth Gilliam Lewis and the children of William and Nancy Gilliam Lewis. and their parents. I am going on the assumption that Nancy and Elizabeth might have been sisters and married brothers. What can you tell me about Griffith Lewis. The first time I heard this name was this week.
Hi Sue,

Yes, I am still around, but haven't done much on my research in a long time. My research has been uploaded to gencircles at the link I provided at the bottom of my previous post. Gathering some data from other people's online genealogy, I gathered that John Lewis' parents were William Lewis and Nancy Gilliam. Williams' parents were Griffith Lewis and Mary Brown. Griffith's parents were William Lynn Lewis and Jane Griffith. The only parent I have for William Lynn Lewis is his father, Aaron Lewis (b. abt. 1761).

What is your connection to the Lewis family, and do you have any information that I am missing? I was looking into that side of my family to confirm rumors of Cherokee Blood, but I have found no such evidence. Do you know of any connection to Native American heritage? Perhaps adoptions, or other sources. Thanks

I am looking for information about Lambert Gibson, born abt 1803 Scott Co, VA, who later married Margeret "Peggy" Gibson and, in 1867, Phoebe Collins? On his marriage record to Phoebe, it says his father was J. William Gybson and his mother "Francies Rowes". I assume her first name was Frances, and it is really hard to make out the last name. It looks like "Rowes". Would love to find out where his parents came from.

Hi Sandra, No see married and did not died until 1977 however, I did find someone that had a child name Emma Lou and the birthday is right so I think that this is her. If they did have a LouEmma then as you say she probably did die young and the marriage of the LouEmma is for another child and they jsut put her in the wrong family.

Scott co does have their Chancery records on line now. But not for all name. I think they are just getting so many done and then adding them I have been waiting for one on James Head estate with Jesse Johnson and it finally came up I was disappointed in what it was but it was still there least.

there were none that involved the Lanes that I could use tho. So I guess I am going with my instinct and saying that LouEmma is not one of James and Mary(Mollie) girls.

Thanks
Sue

I did not see a LouEmma listed for any of the James and Mary couples. However, it could be that her birth was not reported and that she died before the census was taken. If she married, it too is not listed in either Wise Co. or Scott Co.

You can always ask the other researchers what their source is for LouEmma. Could be someone has a family bible that lists her.

Sandra

PS. Keep on on the Library of Virginia site. They are in the process of microfilming chancery records, but they have not gotten to Scott Co. This may help you as well. You can also borrow county records that have been microfilmed through the local Mormon church. if they have a Family History Center in your area, but this will set you back about $6 at least, probably $7. Your local library should also be able to obtain the microfilms from the Library of Va, if you live in Virginia this is a free service or at least was about 10 years ago when I last borrowed records through the Roanoke, Va library. This was before info was available on the Internet.

Thank you Sandra, I have this also, Monroe Lane was one of a set of twins that died young, I wanted confirmation that the ones I had were correct. Folks have a daughter named LouEmma Lane as one of their daughters and I dont think she was. She was born in 1896 and should have been on the 1900 census with them as she didnt die unitl 1977 but I still say she was not one of their daugthers and I am trying to disprove this before passing the info on to one of his descendants. I appreciate you taking the time to do this instead of just giving me what others are passing on.

Thanks again
Sue

Not related, but perhaps this will be start.

There appear to be three families with husband James and wife Mary, all of whom had children around the same time. One appears to be James who married Mary E. and the other is probably James E. and Mary Jones. There is also a James O. married to Mary A. Quillen. They married 3 years before your James and Mary. James O lived near Taylor. I am guessing your lived near Powell and the other near Dekalb. If not, my apologies. None of the marriage records records the Marys' maiden name. The only state Mary Lane or Mary.

1880 Scott Co. Census has:

1. Charles 6 C.C. Lane who married Sarah E. Ramey 25 Jul 1894 Charles was b. 27 Oct 1873

2. Malinda 3

3. Rosa 1 married C.J. Lovell 11 Jun 1896 in Scott Co

4. Roina 0 possibly the R. C. Lane that married Wm.Jones 23 Feb 1899 in Scott Co. She was b. 26 April 1880 in Scott Co. 2nd. marriage? to J.W.J. Dickenson 26 Apr 1906 in Wise Co.

1900 census has:

5. Joseph 18 possibly the Joseph Lane born 4 Jun 1882 to James and Unnamed Lane in Scott Co. Married Cintha Chandler 2 Sep 1902 in Wise

6. Esa 17

7. Cleveland 14 married Lizzie Olinger 22 May 1906 in Wise Co.

8. Adda 12 probably Adaline who married 7 May 1905 Hiram Moore in Wise Co., VA-Addie Lane b. 20 Nov 1887 in Scott Co., VA

9. Lee 10 b. 1 Apr 1891 in Scott Co. to James and Mollie Lane

10. James M. 8=? J.M. Lane b. 1 Apr 1895 in Scott Co., VA

11. Eckle 6 son

Possible others:
12. Monroe 4 b May 1889-uncertain whose son this was, not listed with either James E. or James O. Possible died before 1900 census as I can find no further record.

13. James 4 Dec. 1896 Scott Co. this could be a son of the other James and Mary E. Lane that also lived in Scott Co., at this time. I think this James was James O.

I know that some of these are uncertain, but I am fairly sure of those listed in the censuses, as well as Numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 9. The birth date and month for James M. does not match the 1900 census, but that is not unusual, I have seen several cases where the actual birth month and the census birth month (and year) do not match.

I used Familysearch.org to locate these records. The site is free. You probably have more information that can clear up which James is which.

Good luck.

Sandra

Falin Hurd Family Connection around 1878-1880

I'm looking for a connection between the Falin family and the Hurd family in Scott County, VA (or Hawkins County, TN). My great-grandmother Vinette (Nettie) Falin was born in 1879 in Scott County. She is the daughter of Martha Falin and the granddaughter of Michael and Elisabeth (Head)Falin. The 1880 census shows them living in the same household in Hawkins County, TN. Vinette married Hiram Patton Gillam about 1900 and lived in Yocum Station, Lee County, VA in 1910. When she died of typhoid in 1914 her mother was listed as Martha Falin but her father was "unknown". When her daughter Ibbia (Eva) Gilliam Fig died in 1993 her death certificate listed her mother's name as Vinettie Hurd. I suspect that Vinette had used the name of her biological father although Martha apparently never married the father of Vinette. If you know of any connection between the Hurd family and Martha Falin please let me know. Thanks ... Raymond

I know she married Daniel Lawson later on when Lida was a girl and that Lida sometimes went by Lawson. Lida always told me she and Roy were married at Midway, Tn. close to Greenville, Tn. Midway is a hole in the road. I don't know if there are any marriage records or not I have not gone to the courthouse to check. I have not found any records on line yet. I know my grand mother, the oldest child was born in Hawkins co. and they lived there for a period of time, but moved around a lot. I just can't seem to find anything on William and Susan after they were married.

Sue

Does anyone know if America was Cherokee or some other tribe. Lucy was very dark skinned in the photo I have of her. I can only go back to Edward Lawson wife America. Does anyone know why she died in Indiana. Thanks in advance for any information.

Emma ejpw35@gmail.com

Thanks for the offer. We only know my grandfather born in 1908 May 7 his name is James "Jim" Wyte. He said his father and mother were John & Martha we think he had a brother Sam whom went to war and he moved to NC at age of about 14. Any help would be great. I understand the spelling may be different.

Thanks,

Beth Wyte Hamrick

This information about Hasten Dockery and Katherine Owens is in Marriage book # 1 page 134. This couple was married November 2nd 1852 in Scott County VA. by Robert P. Spencer,This book does not list the names of parents, but # 2 thur 6 does. There is a Hasten and Rebecca listed in marriage book 2 as the parents on record of three children, does this sound familiar?,Did not find them in the Cemetery book index. I will search further as time permits and post it for you.
Willie
