John (Fankhauser) Funkhouser was born in Switzerland and immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1728 aboard the ship Mortonhouse. August 24, 1728 he signed the Declaration of Intent in Philadelphia. He married Barbara (surname unknown)in Lancaster County, PA. The name John Funkhouser appears on the 1737 road petition in Dunmore County, VA and he was living at that time at the headwaters of Tumbling Run, a mile upstream from his brother, Jacob. Children were born: John in 1738; Abraham in 1742; Christian in 1746; David in 1748, Jacob in 1750, Mary in 1755 and Barbara in 1759. April 27, 1750 John received a Northern Neck Land Grant for the land on Tumbling Run near North Mountain signed by Lord Thomas Fairfax, Baron of Cameron. In 1752 he obtained another 294 acres of adjacent land. In 1755 John Funkhouser voted for George Washington, and his name appears in the handwriting of George Washington in his records. In 1760 John became seriously ill and he wrote his will on December 28, 1762. He died within a few years and his will was probated March 5, 1765. In the year 1776 his land was divided among his descendants.
