Catharine (Linaweaver) Kibler b. abt. 1754 Virginia

Need death data on subject person. Catharine was married to William Kibler who was born abt. 1750 and died btw 1811-1826) I have seen numerous trees showing Catharine's death date in 1798, however no sources are listed. Together they had 9 children: Philip, John, William, Lewis, Jacob, George, Catharine, Sarah and Emanuel. Catharine's birth date is shown on many trees as abt. 1754 in Shenandoah Co., VA., but again no sources listed.

I would think it would be up to the author how they decide to distribute the book. Yes, many books such as these are at historical societies or local libraries that have genealogy rooms, but you may be able to find some to buy through a genealogical publisher or bookstore.

I know that the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society (one county south of Shenandoah Co.) sells a book that includes death notices from the Rockingham Register newspaper which is available in their bookstore, but generally, it just depends if someone takes the time to put one together for a specific area or county.

Thank you so much for this. I have been able to print it. I knew alot of this but there are new brothers and sisters for some and that is nice to find out and be able to add to the appropriate trees. Can I ask if you know if most counties have books like these and are they available to the general public or do you need to contact the local historical societies to gain access to them or have them do the research for you?

Before Mt. Airy was built around 1800 the land was owned by Taverner Beale. He owned the estate from 1772-1795 when it was sold to his son-in-law William Steenbergen. Any idea if the original house from the 18th century still exists?

You are really good at this and seem to have a LOT of resources at your disposal. I'm just beginning and it can be overwhelming at times, but I'm really having a good time. I need to retire so I can devote more time to it. I never dreamed I would find it so interesting. I need to get all of my papers, information and photos organized. What fun!

Thanks so much - you're amazing!

Barb

An Indiana County Historian put this together for us several years ago:

Daniel Alexander Stockslager's parents were Daniel and Esther Stockslager.

Daniel Alexander Stockslager, born circa 1763, married Anna (maybe Mary Ann) Feltner, of Wilmington, Delaware, and they had nine children.

Ann Stockslager married James Russell (quote: "the Russels were musical and came from Virginia"). (They were married Feb. 2, 1821, in Shenandoah, VA.)

Sarah Catherine Russell (originally from Shenandoah County) married William S. Daniel in Floyd County, IN, in 1851 (my g-g-grandparents).

Sarah Stockslager, a sister of Ann, married John D. Daniels, and I'm thinking he was possibly a brother or related to Wm. S. Daniel(s). Catherine (age 17) was living with them during the 1850 census, in Floyd County, IN. Two years later, she and William were married.

I found information on the other children of Ann and James, but haven't added it to my tree yet. So many ancestors, so little time.

Some of the other Stockslagers ended up in Corydon, IN, where I'm originally from. Everyone in Corydon is probably distantly related in some way or the other, like a lot of old, small towns.

Thanks,
Barb

Glad I could help! If you post Catherine's parents, especially if they are from Shenandoah or Frederick County,VA I might be able to help with them. I have a few books with marriages that I can search.

WOW, you provided a lot of information - thank you very much! I had quite a bit of this, but you did provide more than I had obtained. I found info on Catherine's parents in some old papers I had, and discovered who his parents were yesterday. She was his first wife and the mother of my great-grandfather, Dr. William Daniel. I was sorry to see how many of his other children died at young ages.

Tracking my ancestors is a very interesting experience.

Thanks again for your very helpful information!

Barb

1. Are you talking about the Timothy Miller who m. Julia Ann (Juliana) Glenn, 17 Jun 1823 in Shenandoah? If so, Duane Borden's Shenandoah Marriage (1850-1882) list 2 marriages of children of Timothy:
a. Tomas Miller to Margater Barton 21 Nov 1854 (as you mentioned)
b. Andrew J. Marston to Sarah Isabelle Miller, 29 Jul 1858

2. Same Timothy Miller filed pension claim as vet from War of 1812, having seen service as a private in "Jesse Allen's Co. Va Mil" per Ancestry.com index. Anything to be found at NARA? Or, where in VA did Jesse Allen's company hail from?
3. The Kentucky birthplace seems very weird to me. I verified tht KY was never a territory, it was part of Virginia until statehood, June 1, 1792. Early records might have lableld older events as VA where later compilers might call it KY? You know your sources better than I, but I'm discounting the KY as garble, repeated times 3 for now.
4. Some Family Trees at Ancestry.com show a William Barton b. ca. 1766 as father of a Thomas, who might name a son Timtohty who names a son after his own father, i.e., Thomas? Just speculation.
5. So at this point do you think it's more pertinent for your research that you sort out the Bartons more, or that Millers are priority. If Millers, I might need the rest of that Edinburg tree, since I didn't expand back in time too much beyond Elizabeth to Peter (Jr.) to Peter (Sr.).

I'm trying to locate parents and any other children of my great-great-grandparents, Sarah Catherine Russell (1831-1871, from Virginia, possibly Shenandoah county) and William Solomon Daniel (1832-1906 of Indiana). They were married in Floyd County, Indiana, on Dec. 27, 1851. Their son, Dr. William Daniel of Corydon, Indiana, was my great-grandfather. Thanks in advance for any help.

I also copied a tree from the Edinburg Library for Peter Miller, Jr. who married Christena Hisey. That shows your Elizabeth Miller who married Nathaniel Barton (there is no sourcing for any of these people):

Peter Miller, Jr. b. 1788 Shenandoah County, son of Peter Miller, Sr., and Catharine Holler. He died 1864.
Children:
1. Elizabeth Miller b. 1809
+Nathaniel Barton m. 16 April 1836 (divorced)
a. Mary Jane Barton b. 1837 m. Barton 28 Dec 1865

There are four more pages of this tree that I'll gladly send to anyone who is interested. There is one more child of Peter Miller who married a Barton, Mary Miller b. 1819 m. William Barton 6 Nov 1839

There are other crossovers in the family of Peter Miller and William and James Barton. I'm trying to find a family for my Timothy Miller b. ca 1782 whose son Thomas b. 1832 m. Margaret Barton, daughter of Matthew Barton and Mary Boyd. The bondsman for the marriage of Matthew Barton and Mary Boyd was William Barton shown as a son of William Barton in the Barton Tree I located.

All of this makes me want to find my Timothy Miller somewhere in the Peter Miller tree, but there is never any mention of him. In three independent sources after Timothy's death he is said to have been born in Kentucky. He was in Shenandoah County by 1820.

Joy

Earliest record is Abraham living with his grandparents in 1850 Shenandoah VA
With the ages within the household, there is showing of a possible mother of Abe. From the showings in this census, I would say most are grandchildren/great grandchildren along with most likely Henry's sister or sister in law.

1850
Shenandoah VA
Henry Clark 84 (1766) VA
Rebecca 86
Elizabeth Batchel 38
Abraham Strickler 30
Elizabeth Wetherholtz 18
Julianna Baker 20
Elizabeth Rhinehart 85
Issac Cash 11

Now, as for father of Abe,
I found in 1820 in Isabella Furnace,ShenandoahVA
one Abraham Strickler who was a slave owner showing his age 45 years or older

There were Stricklers listed in VA prior to 1820, but found Abraham Strickler records in 1790-1810 in PA

I found where Abe married later in life to an older woman named Sarah Helsley
they are found in 1860,1870, and 1880 census

I find it interesting that in the 1850 census with Henry Clark, who was listed as a farmer had three people in his household with German names. Am wondering if he re-named hinmself, or if this is his wife's Rebecca;s relatives,

I did find VA birth records of one of Abe and Sarah's children. What is interesting in question is a possiblity of Abe's great grandchild. I don't know.
Perhaps this child was a namesake of Abe but there is no proof.

1860 Cabin Hill, Shenandoah,VA
Abraham Strickler 36, Sarah 40, John 7, Mary 1 month

1870
Abraham 50, Sara 55, John 18, Virginia 10
(so perhaps her name was Mary Virginia?)

VA Births
John S, Strickler
2-28-1853
F- Abraham
M- Sara

Harrison Stickler
b-10-10-1868
North River, Shenandoah VA
F- Abraham Strickler jr
M- Virginia A.

Benjamin Strickler
b- April 29, 1852
Page Co VA
F- Abraham
M-Elizabeth

I know this is not what you were seeking, perhaps you already have this info. If so, no harm done, if not, a possibility of more info. than you had.

I don't know if this is of help or not, just passing along with what was found.

Colberts of VA

I am researching Robert J. Colbert/Calbert (about 1824-1884) and (Mary) Catherine (Peer) Colbert (about 1827-1904) who moved to Johnstown, Pa about 1860. I show a marriage record in Shenandoah Co Va. for Robert Colbert and Catherine Peer November 19, 1846. I have hit a brick wall prior to that date. I cannot find any existence of Robert prior to that time in Virginia, nothing about parents or siblings. Can anyone tell me if any Colberts/Calberts lived in Shenandoah County around that time? The next mention of Robert J. Colbert is in the 1860 census for Johnstown, Pa. Does anyone have any information on him prior to 1846 or between 1846 and 1860?
Also, Catherine’s father was listed as Philip Peer, but there were two Philip Peers in Shenandoah Co. at that time. One was the son of John Peer and the other was the son of Mathias Peer. I have noticed a number of family trees as having one Philip or the other as Catherine’s father. Does anyone have definitive proof of which Philip was her father?
For some reason I show Levi Barton as father of James, but I have no citations on it.(?) Not like me to do that.
I am descended through James' son, Nathaniel, who m. three times. I'm from the first marriage to Elizabeth Miller, so we may have research interests in common. I haven't ever seen the Barton family trees at the Edinburg library, for example, usually chasing other surnames when I do get by there.
Don't know if this is truly any help.
