I am looking for information on a free negro by the name of Lucy Brooke on 1840 census. There is also a free man on the same page named Troy Brooke. I have found a Lucy Brooke in 1850 in Rappahannock County and when trying to find her in 1840 found the Lucy in Spotsylvania county. Any help would be appreciated.

Also does anyone know of any Free Negro records for Spotsylvania County? Thanks

Thank you for your response. I have again been reviewing the family of John Haydon and Lucy Morton since receiving your reply. Is it true that John married first to Christian /Christan Brown and that they were parents of Jeremiah, Elijah, and Abner? If so then he evidently had 11 children with Lucy Morton.

I wonder the bases used by several other researchers for showing that Lucy was b ca 1740 and died in 1811. This is of interest for my Morton family research.

Good to hear from you,
Jay G. Lamb

Hi Everyone,

My Name is Wendy Ramirez and I am one of the Co-Administrators for the Morris Family DNA project.

Many Morris Families came into Spotslvania County very Early including some of the Morris lines I am related to, Morris is a fairly common Surname and we are in the Process of trying to Identify the many different Morris lines related to each other through DNA. Many of these Families came from Virginia and North Carolina. We have been testing many of these Virginia and North Carolina lines.

If you are a Male Morris and would like to participate and hopefully identify which Morris Family line you are descended from DNA testing is a wonderful Tool. Women can participate by asking a Male member of the Family to test for their line, this can be a father, brother, uncle, cousin etc..

Right now FTDNA (Family Tree DNA)is running a 1/2 price sale on a combined Y-DNA (Paternal DNA Test) and a MTDNA (Maternal DNA Test) we would love to have you participate but the sale only runs thru Wednesday 6-24-09

If you are interested or would like additional information Please feel free to send an e-mail to me at:

wendyramirez2608@yahoo.com or morrisdna@att.net

Thank You

Wendy Ramirez

Gina,
I don't know where to start. In answer to your question, you are partially right. William Barnett 1665-1756, father to Henry J. 1704-1798. Mother was Anne Rolfe Boling 1665-1774. William was her 2nd husband. Her 1st husband was Col. Robert Boling b. 26 Dec 1646 in London, England, mar.1675 in VA. They had 5 children.
That is just the beginning - leads back beyond the infamous Rebecca "Pocahantas" Matoaka Powhatan who is my 9th GGM.
You can visit my family tree. It is public. The name is "Watson Family Tree". There are so many stories, pictures, and real history of Varina Farms, VA and the Powhatan Indians (Cherokee). I'm in the process of getting it all worked out. Dates? Places? 1st and 2nd wives & husbands? Etc.?
I may be mistaken, but I think you have a website on the Barnett Family that I have visited. Nice job!!
After finding this message post, I now understand why I couldn't find any of the Barnett's I was looking for on your website.
So far, I've gotten the Barnett's traced back to Thomas Barnett 1610 Hertsford, England - 1650 VA and Robert Rolfe 1510-1539.
I would really like to stay in contact with you. I know that we could really help each other out and all the people who have visited your website. For the present time, I'd like to keep this amongst you and I until we have done some further research, because the lineage get confusing starting with William and Anne.
You can e-mail me at: lynnm2009@yahoo.com. Let me hear from you!! Good Luck. Lynn

Formation of Spotsylvania County

Spotsylvania County was formed in 1720 from Essex, King William, and King & Queen counties.

Has anyone reconstructed which parts of the county came from each of the three component counties?

The southern bound of King & Queen was set in 1691 as the Pamunkey River, separating it from New Kent, then Hanover counties. The present line between Hanover-Louisa and K&Q, Caroline, Spotsylvania and Orange counties is the North Anna River, which is an extension of the Pamunkey. Was that the original boundary?

When King & Queen was divided in 1701, the dividing line between K&Q and the new King William was to be the "Matapiny" river, K&Q on the north side. Following the Mattaponi River upstream takes one as far as about 4 miles east of Thornburg, where it forks. The south fork is the Matta and the north fork is the Poni. WHICH FORK FORMED THE BOUNDARY?

Each of those forks splits again. The Matta forks SW of Thornburg into the Mat (the southern branch) and the Ta (the northern branch).

The Poni splits into the Po and the Ni. The Ni is the northern branch and it runs upstream NW to what is now the Wilderness Battlefield south of Chancellorsville. The Po is the southern branch and is formed from several creeks near Shady Grove Corner on SR 612.

WERE ANY OF THESE A BOUNDARY? WHAT WAS THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN KING & QUEEN AND ESSEX?

Abraham Davis in Spotsylvania County

I am looking for Abraham Davis, born abt 1782 in Virginia. In 1850 he farmed in Spotsylvania County. I don't have his wife's name but they had a number of children: Wm. Worthington Davis, born abt 1814; Joseph W., Ann W., Mary, Ellen, Henry G., Susan H., Achsah C. (female), James L., and there may have been a daughter Nancy. What is interesting and a little odd is that most of the children never married and lived together, even after they moved to Washington, D.C. after The War.

William Worthington Davis married, I believe, a Katherine Worthington and their daughter Katherine (Kate) Davis was married to Joseph Pulitzer. Most books allege that William Worthington Davis was a first cousin of Jefferson Davis, but I cannot find any documentation proving this. It is also alleged that he was a judge in Washington, D.C. but I am leaning toward his being a Justice of the Peace.

Hi Diana, Erica,

Funny, I met Erica a few months ago on a trip to the Library. Hadn't been on this list for some time, so didn't see this thread until just now. I live near Mine Run, so get there from time to time. Are you sure it isn't the Mine Road (as in Mine Road Baptist Church) cemetery you are speaking of? I think that would likely include the names you mentioned... Also, there are a LOT of Brooks Cemeteries in my area...if you have specific names, let me know and I'll see if I see anything. They have a LOT of little family cemeteries spread around in various places, so it might be a little tricky... I have a "cousin" who has researched every cemetery for miles around and catalogs his finds. He might be a help as well. (You listenin' Wil?)

Greg

Lewis Walden died in 1799 in Spots?Va.
His son Thomas appointed George Walden to be the attorney
upon his father's death.
I have a copied deed document from the Spots Co.courthouse
signed Dec.1805 with the above info.
Now,my ggggrandfather was Thomas Walden who married Sarah
Alsop in 1795 in Spots Co.
They moved to Kentucky around 1810.
I'm wondering if the Thomas on the above document is my Thomas.
Scant evidence suggests that my Thomas' father was named Lewis.
My Thomas was born 1760-1770 in Caroline Co.Va.I don't
know his siblings names.
Is there anyone searching for Waldens born around the same time as Thomas or even before him????
I know all the names of Thomas and Sarah's children plus some of the younger generations. They lived in Harrison Co.Kentucky from the 1820's to at least the 1880's.
Any help would be so appreciated to continue the many years spent by my late Aunt Dot Johnston of Nanaimo,B.C.Canada
email me at eglanglois@hotmail.com

Thanks in advance,
Elaine Langlois(nee Walden)
