DR.WALTER LESLIE DEVANY - BELOVED CITIZEN AND ABLE PHYSICIAN PASSES AWAY AT DENDRON
Dendron, Va. - Dr.W.L.Devany died at his residence in Dendron, Va., January 6, 1931, in the 72nd year of his age, after a long and lingering illness. Dr.Devany was a graduate
of the Medical College of Virginia, having graduated in 1883, and was ever true to his Alma Mater. He was widely known througout Virginia and ever close in touch with the medical profession of Richmond, carrying most of his patients to the hospitals in that city. He was a member of the Medical Society of Virginia, and at one time its Vice President. He was a splendid representative of the old time Southern gentleman, the family physician; whose life was devoted to suffering humanity, ever having as his motto, duty well done and courtesy to his fellow physicians. He started the practice of medicine at Wakefield, Va., and there remained for fifteen years, leaving to become physician and surgeon for the Surry Lumber Company of Dendron, Surry County, and remained with them until the plant was disbanded. To a host of sorrowing friends he leaves a sacred memory of one who ever forgetful of self, answered the cry for relief whenever and wherever needed. He was the son of James H. and Nannie J.Devany, of Courtland. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Anna Wells Devany, three daughters, Miss Annie L Devany, Dendron, Miss Dorothy Devany, Hamonton NJ. and Mrs Sam J Wilson, of Montrose, Ark., two sons, Judge Walter Leslie Devany and Edward Heath Devany of Norfolk; two brothers, Dr. C.L.Devany of Norfolk, and W.J.Devany of Lawrenceville, Va; three sisters Mrs. R.D.Norris, of Norfolk, Mrs S.J.Drewry, of Wakefield; and Mrs Sallie Jones of Brunswick. The funeral was held from the Methodist Church of Wakefield. Va., Wednesday at 3 p.m. and interment made in the Wakefield Cemetry.
