I've just received my copy of Gary Williams's new book, Sussex County, Virginia: A Heritage Recalled by the Land, and it is superb! Gary is Clerk of the Sussex Circuit Court and a life-long promoter of Sussex history. This book is obviously a labor of love, and Sussex County is indeed fortunate to have such an erudite and well-informed lover. The book is big (8.5" x 11", 356 pages plus front matter) with lots of photographs, end notes, four indices and many maps. Gary has mapped the early land grants and labelled them with names and dates. The book covers events, people and places. If you are interested in Sussex County history, this is the book for you.
There is contact information on the Sussex County VAGenWeb site on the How To Find Your Family page.
However, I am also offering lookups from it. For that, use the Lookups page at the same web site.

Eve S.
Loxis.....was this a village in Sussex Co.?

I'm working on an annotated edition of my 2nd gr-grandfather's memoir (Theophilus Gilliam Barham, d. 1885) and am still stumped on one thing mentioned. He refers to a town/village/crossroads called "Loxis," which I presume was in Sussex, possibly in the Henry district. Barham was married in January 1854 to Virginia Ann Prince, d/o Benjamin Prince and Martha Lifsey. In his memoir, he states: "After my marriage I lived at Loxis where Jacob Williams now lives...." If not Sussex, then Greensville is a possibility. T. G. and Virginia Ann Barham lived at Loxis two years, and then moved to Greensville "where Mrs. Lifsey died on the Petersburg Railroad, near the Otterdam Swamp, where I lived until after the war..." The second property was a gift from Benjamin Prince to his son-in-law, and was not far from Jarratt.

Any help ID'ing "Loxis" would be welcomed! There's always the possiblity of a spelling error, as the memoir in its current form is a typescript copy of a longhand original, the typescript prepared in the 1940s. Barham was born in Southampton in 1833, and finished the War as a Lt. Colonel in the 24th VA Cavalry.

Colliers in the early 1800s

Looking for any information on the parentage of John E Collier, born 1829 in Sussex County, Va. I believe his mother was Elizabeth, already widowed in the 1830 census in Sussex County. 1 male <5 and two females, 1<5 and 1<14, also in the household. I can not locate Elizabeth in the 1840 census, and believe she may have remarried. I have no leads on a father. Maybe someone has info on a Collier male, born approx 1800, died 1829/30 in Sussex. I have noticed a few candidates for Collier grandparents in the early 1800s Sussex census records, as well.

John E Collier, ultimately, wound up in Richmond, married with 2 daughters by 1860. His first daughter was named Elizabeth. He died in a Civil War battle in 1862.

Are there any birth, marriage, death indexes from Sussex that would cover that time period?

Any help would be appreciated.

In John Bennett Boddie's "Birth, Deaths, and Sponsors, 1717-1778: From the Albemarle Parish Register of Surry and Sussex Counties, VA" page 38, the christenings of "Wm. and Amy Dunn" listed Drury Dunn as a son.

One researcher stated that Drury was a son of William Dunn and wife, Mary Amy Gilliam, but no source was given. Does anyone know the maiden name of Drury's mother?
My ancestor, Lewis Dunn, is said to be the brother of Drury Dunn. He was a doctor and practiced in Hampshire county, VA now WV.
I am searching his parentage and would appreciate any help. Candee

Re: EZELLs in VA

I am descended from an Ezell family of Southampton County, Virginia. This is the information I have rounded up from relatives and off the internet.

Timothy Essell who may have been born about 1635, in the small village of Ezalle, France was married to Mary Weeks (or De Torres) born about 1657. She was the Administratrix of the estate in 1696. In the census of 1683 appear the names of George, Michael, Timothy,Sr. and Timothy Jr. Ezell. Apparently Timothy Ezell, Sr. was the father of the others. The county was either Surry or Sussex, Virginia.

Michael Ezell's will was probated December 18, 1719. He names a daughter Elizabeth and her husband John Atkinson, and a son William Ezell. Michael Ezell's wife was Elizabeth the daughter of Joane Bowman and Thomas Bowman, a Quaker who died in 1699. Michael had a brother George Ezell for which I have better documented information.

George Ezell died in Surry County, Virginia, in 1693. His will was proved in Surry County Court in April 1693. He names his wife Elizabeth and children: George, Elizabeth, Mary, Lucy, Sarah and Timothy. Notes in the margin say that George's wife was Elizabeth Clarke, daughter of Henry Clarke.

Timothy Ezell, son of the above, was born around 1689 and died about 1759-60. His wife's name was Mary (perhaps Bradenton) He names children: Elizabeth Gilbert, Lydia Ezell, Mary Rose Ezell, George Ezell, Thomas Ezell, Timothy Ezell, Jr. and John Ezell.

Thomas Ezell, son of the above, was born about 1715 and married Anne Rose about 1749 in Sussex County, Virginia. Their children: John Ezell (b.1742), Thomas Ezell (b.1744), Anne Ezell (b.1746), William Ezell (b.1749), Frederick Ezell (b. b.1752, Balaam Ezell (b.1756) and Abel Ezell (b.1758).

Could this be the Frederick you are looking for?

I was recently looking for information on my ggg grandaunt Augusta Maifeld in Waverly, VA. I believe I found her as Augusta W. Arnold (b. abt 1843), the wife of J. W. Arnold (b. abt 1837) in the 1880 census. Listed just below her on the census page is her sister Amelia Maifeld Loehr.

I lived in Waverly my whole life but knew nothing of Augusta, aside from her name, until now. I'm looking for any information on Augusta or the Arnold family and their descendants. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I have confirmed that Augusta Arnold is my ggg grandaunt Augusta Maifeld. My grandmother told me that there was "something strange" about the way she died. In March of 1883 Augusta went out to the well behind her home (across from the Episcopal Church on Main St.) and was hit in the head and killed. She was buried in the family cemetary behind the house until a road went in behind it and her grave was moved to Waverly Cemetary.

My gg grandfather Albert Maifeld and 2 of his brothers left Germany to come live with their aunt in Waverly. Until now I believed it was Amelia Loehr they were living with but it was actually Augusta Arnold. I've learned from family letters that John W. was not a very nice man and treated the boys very harshly. There was a lot of family tension at this time.

I'm also searching for a court record of her death, if one exists.

Brittany Pearson

Seeking more information on Thomas E. Peebles of Sussex County, who was probably born in the 1790s or perhaps earlier. He is known to be the father of at least the following children, and perhaps more:

Amanda Peebles (1824-1910), married Thomas Ferrall of Halifax County, NC.
James M. Peebles (1817-1857), married Mary Cotton of Halifax County, NC.
Mariah Louisa Peebles (1825-1910), married James L. Battle of Edgecombe County, NC.
Frances Rebecca Peebles (born ca 1824) married Edward Champion Land in Sussex County.
Sarah L. Peebles, married Edmund H. Daniel in Sussex County in 1833.
Elizabeth W. Daniels (born ca 1815), married John L. Dunn in Sussex County, 1838.

Many of these children or grandchildren ended up near the town of Scotland Neck, NC. The wills of Amanda Peebles Ferrall and her sister Mariah Louisa Peebles Battle, neither of whom left issue, list many nieces and nephews that we are trying to identify. Does anyone have any further information on this family? Thanks in advance.

David Gammon

Would be interested in information indicating a 1st marriage for Elizabeth Meglamre(McGlamre). My records indicate only marriage to Philip Bailey, 2 Jan 1794.

I'm very familiar with THOMAS MARKHAM'S FUQUA WEBSITE . I'm also aware of JOHN BROOKS-ELAM FUQUA, his private school in VA, the FUQUA SCHOOL OF BUSINESS at DUKE UNIVERSITY, the fact that he was a MEGA-MILLIONAIRE, & his many, many other accomplishments . I've even been over to his home in ATLANTA & had a conversation with his wife, DOROTHY CHAPMAN FUQUA. I've got a copy of his best selling book. His daddy, JOHN BROOKS ELAM was a poor PRINCE EDWARD CO VA TOBACCO FARMER who was unable to take care of his infant son when his wife died when the boy was born. His grandparents who were FUQUAS adopted & raised him & gave him their last name FUQUA when he had grown up. THANK YOU SO MUCH, BRITTANY . TAKE CARE . Mitch Faulk

Not sure if this will be any help but I found this website about the Fuqua family:

http://www.tommymarkham.com/Fuqua/Fuqua-1.htm

There is also a private school (Fuqua School) in Prince Edward Co., VA that is named for John Fuqua (born John Brooks Elam, Jr.). His great grandfather was John Fuqua. Though I'm not sure if this is connected to your Fuqua line.

This is not my family, but I am from Sussex Co. so I check this board often. I'll let you know if I find anything else that might interest you.

Brittany Pearson
