Elden Oney has done a terrific job analyzing the early Oneys. He has convinced me that Benjamin Oney ["II"] (c.1735-1801), father of Jemima Oney Payne ("Pain" in will) and my ancestor, William Oney (b.1756), was the son of Benjamin Oney ["I"] (1699-c.1775) who was born in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England and immigrated to America as an indentured servant in 1719; married Anne Wilson in Philadelphia in 1733. Be VERY skeptical of the 1889 genealogy which suggests an "Olney"-Rhode Island connection. To my mind, Elden has discredited it as the source of the Tazewell Co. VA Oneys.
