Mike,
My great-grandfather was James Gill(1852-1949) a mulatto slave. James Gill was interviewed in the late 30's as part of the Federal Writers Project. According to his slave narrative, Thomas Wilson White was his slave owner. When James was around 7 yrs old, his family moved from Alabama to Phillips Co., Arkansas. I found the 1860 Slave Schedule for Phillips Co. listing Thomas and William Young Conn White as the slave owners and Jim Lynch as the oversear. My grandfather also mentions Jim Lynch in his slave narrative. In addition, I found a diary entry by Illinois Leutenant John Preston Mann(1822-1908). One of his diary entries list Jim Lynch as the oversear and Thomas White as the slave owner....He also notes that Thomas' father was from Va.. Would like to know if James Gill's mother Mary(bn 1825) was part of estate. Am also interested in finding any info on the Gill surname.
