Hello - I'm related to the Huffman family only by marriage, however, my maiden name was Monroe and I was born in Stafford. Also I have Coppage ancestors. Can you tell me more about Sarah Elizabeth Monroe or other Monroe's or Colppages associated with the Huffman family?

Jeri Brooks
jerib6@aol.com

I am researching my Holtzman line from Virginia. William Henry Holtzman gives Culpeper, Warenton, and Fairfax as locations he was from. Would it be possible for the Holtzman name to be associated with the Germanna Colonies? I can not locate his parents.

Uncle Cary was the oldest/first born. I never knew that story about the two children visiting the uncle in the Boston Area. L. Powell and Lydia Emma Horner Humphries lived in West Roxbury and ran a Mom and Pop store. The Humphries lived in the same neighborhood as my Smith great grandparents. So I think that they visited Pop Humphries (who as the second born of 12 always had children on his knees).

Now I remember. I think one or two of JRP's sons went to college or medical or dental school and my grandfather according to my mother stayed with the old folks. I do know that one of the brother's sons (Jack) went to Hampden Syndny with my father, and he may be the one who was a pediatrician in Roanoke and his brother Louis? was a dentist near DC. When one of my nephews started at UVa., his roommate was the son of Jack's or Louis's daughter who lived in Atlanta. All I remember is both Jack and Louis had wives named "Dot" -- who were distinguished as "red Dot" and "blonde Dot" based on their hair color. Where again do you fit in all this?

I always thought he was the oldest. My father and his twin sister Charlotte were born on July 16, 1911. His father died in the early 1960s. His mother died within days of the birth. He was initially raised by Humphries kin, then his mother's, then back to live with his Humphries grandparents (Lilias and JRP) until sometime around 1916 when he was sent to Boston to join his twin sister who was living with a Humphries uncle. I can't remember which. When he was 8 or so, he and his sister went to live with his maternal uncle -- but the condition was that his father (who didn't remarry until after WWII or so) and the Humphries family not take the twins away again as it was too hard on his maternal uncle's family when they left.

When my older sister and brother were little, they used to go with my parents to Culpeper to visit Uncle Cary and Aunt Beena who they loved. They must have died before I was born in 1948. In addition, Uncle Cary's grandson (I think) went to UVa probably in the early 50s, and then his son Raleigh went to UVa medical school in the 1970s.

JRP's army records are available in Richmond at the library. When was Marion Kemper Humphries Sr. born? JRP and Lilias married in September, 1869. I'm not sure when Uncle Cary was born but my gt grandfather was born on 2/29/1872. Of the 12 children, where was he in the birth order?

Well, heck Miss Carolyn! Of course, our common ancestor's (Oliver P.) picture is not available. My relationship is his first marriage who died around 18 years old having a one-year old child. Sad situation, but my understanding is Oliver moved to Ohio and had more children? I guess this branch of his tree is where you came into the world? Do you know where Oliver P Garr is buried? Did Horace live and die in Louisville?

He was my 3 greatgrandfather....R C Tway family wing who ended up owning the family farm. Do you have any pictures of him -Oliver Garr? I am sure you are aware his Kentucky wife died at a very early age and I believe he remarried in Ohio. I recently visited his father's cemetery at Plainview Farms who was a very wealthy man...now the farm is developed surrounded by apartments in Louisville...where his first wife margaret amelia head (garr) is also buried. I hope to help to improve the cemetery's dilapidated state.

Hi, Thank you for your reply. The cemetery is in bad shape, from all I have gathered. People have offered to help, but I live in Alabama and not a true relative of the GARR family. I come in as a shirttail from Wilhite side of family. I found a note on one of the message board about the cemetery and tried to get people in Louisville to take up the cause of saving the historic site. It all started when I replied to a post and was given this information.

"The Garr Family Cemetery is an historic treasure located on property owned by NTS/Plainview Associates in the Plainview Apartment complex in Louisville, Ky. This isn’t my family cemetery. But I saw the ruins last summer and wanted to get something going. At that time several tombstones were smashed and on the ground. I put together photos and information and mailed a report to the company. A representative said the company would consider partnering with family members to do some work on the cemetery. As far as I know, that’s where it stands. There are some photos on Find a Grave. But they don’t show the damage. As far as I know, that’s where it stands. I haven’t revisited the site. I do have several photos. Contact me through the e-mail on my Web site -- http://wva.homestead.com/ and I will be happy to furnish photos and more details. "

I then started posting on the message board to try and get help. Here is what I have tried: Written to Historical society, no funds, but willing to lend restoration knowledge; Genealogy Society, no answer; University of Kentucky, College of design, Restoration preservation department, no answer; Preservation society, no answer. I also wrote to stone masons and see if they might donate their services to restore headstone. wrote to Germanna message board to ask other GARR members to get involved, you are fist to answer from here.

I have tried all I can, from here in Alabama, hope we get someone to help, but if not then at least I tried. Such a shame.
There is on Garr that offered help, so maybe you can e-mail him. I would try to get a Louisville area newspaper to write a story about this, might help with the cause. I also contacted a Boy Scout Group to see if they would use as a project to help clean up, no answer.

Here a post from the Garr in Louisville area

Hello My Name is Charles H Garr , My Wife and I went to the Cemetery on 4/4/2011 and it is in very bad shape. We have spoke about how it would be nice if we could re-store it or at least clean it up enough to see ALL of the graves there. I do have pics of them showing some of the damage to the head stones .. I also have a pdf file that was made up about the cemetery back in 2004 that even then shows not as much damage as now.. Please contact me to help in anyway I can

Charles H Garr
email: mrc.garr@yahoo.com
Photo's on Find a Grave under Jacob GARR.

There were a few others, but none that picked up the cause.

Sandi

PS. I have tried for a year, and all but given up, so hope you succeed.

Sandy:
I am a descendant of Margaret Amelia Head (daughter of Benjamin and Margaret N Head) and Oliver Perry Garr (son of Jacob and Susan Garr). Together MAH and OPG had one child (Harriet Amelia Garr), my great-great grandmother.

Unfortunately, Margaret A Head died a year after Harriet Garr was born. Harriet Garr married Thomas Levi Tway. The gravesite has Margaret Amelia Head (Garr) with the gravemarker simply stating MAG. Sorry for the long details.

Anyway, Harriet's youngest Robert C. Tway (I and others called him "Big Boy") took over the overship of the 1000 acre farm (known as "Plainview Farm" which was known for its saddlebred horses, including one world champion five-gaited and Jersey dairy cattle) where the Garr Cemetery is located. His son William T Tway (my grandfather) sold the dairy and horse farm to developers after no one in the family wanted to live in the big R. C. Tway house or on the farm (considered rural in the early 1970s for Louisville). My mother showed American Saddlebred horses on the farm property.

Based on my ancestry work, I have made plans to take my mother to the farm shortly to show her the gravesite which I have perused and found to be really sad. She told me she remembers the gravesite when she would ride around it working out the horses. If you need to see my tree on ancestry.com look under prospect9601 or you can see there is a wikipedia about R C Tway.

I see you have an interest in saving the cemetery. What were your thoughts? Thank you for your concerns. One strange story.....Margaret N Head remarried a Garr (Henry Lewis Garr) after Benjamin Head died.

Help with WILHITE - LAWSON Connection

My name is Elmer Lee Wilhite, Jr.; born in Owensboro, KY in 1944; son of Elmer Lee Wilhite, Sr. and Mary John Crowe. My father was born in Joplin, MO in 1916; son of Harrison Wilhite and Jesse Mae Greenwell. Harrison was born in Harden County, KY in 1888; son of George Washington Wilhite and Sidenia Scott. George Washington was born in Meade County, KY in about 1852; son of William Wilhite and Lucinda Lemaster. William was born in Knox County, TN about 1809; William is believed to be the son of Julius Wilhite and Margaret Hise, but no proof has yet been developed.

Some months ago, I decided to pursue DNA genealogy. I had a Y-DNA test done by Family Tree DNA. Much to my surprise, my results came back as Haplogroup I2a, which is consistent with the surname Lawson rather than Haplogroup R1b1a2, which is the Wilhite result. I had a separate Y-DNA test done by the National Geographic genographics project and the result confirmed the I2a Haplogroup.

So, I’m trying to work out how this came to be. I was wondering if any of you have any information that would shed light on the WILHITE – LAWSON connection. If so, please respond here or, if you would prefer to email me privately, my address is Wilhite@gforcecable.com.

Of course, it would also be helpful to have more Wilhite Y-DNA results. If you are willing to help with DNA results but have questions, I’d be happy to explain the simple procedure. Your best bet would be to check out the Family Tree DNA web site at http://www.familytreedna.com

The cost of the Y-DNA test ranges from $169 for 37 markers to $268 for 67 markers. The larger number of markers provides more information for linking within a surname group. There may be discounts available with Family Tree DNA. There are also other vendors that may be a bit cheaper.
Sorry, I do not recognize the gentleman you would like to identify, but had a thought I wanted to share. You think he might be James Barr but this man must be quite a bit older than James Barr. When James died during the Civil War he was only 29 years old. I doubt that at age 29 he would have had as much gray in his beard as does this man.

Hey everybody. I am writing in regards to the Kemper Family Book. I have been researching my family tree pretty steady for a couple years, but all of the Kemper info is what we have found on my wife's side... Great History! I am completely fascinated with Reuben and his brothers and the impact they had on our country. I currently have the Genealogy of the "Kemper Family of the United States" book, and also, "The Confederacy's Forgotten Son", all about Gov. James Lawson Kemper. I should be getting "The Rogue Republic" in the mail this week. This one is on the Kemper Brothers, Reuben, Samuel, and Nathan, and how they started the revolution that resulted in the Republic of West Florida.
My Wife's Father is the 6th Great Grandson of John Kemper of the Germanna Settlement, or at least, that is what our research shows to date. We are ordering a DNA test to confirm. Great Stuff! If I can be of any help to anyone on the Kemper family, please let me know.

Hello All,

I received the attached picture from my mother. There is no name or location noted on it and I really wonder who this person is. ]]

My thoughts are that this may be James Martin Barr b. 13 Oct 1832 in Jackson Co GA d. 3 Sep 1861,kia First Manassas, who married Louisa Eldra Crisler b. 22 Oct 1836, daughter of Jonathan Crisler b. 18 Mar 1806 in Madison Co VA.

I would love to be certain of whom this picture is. If anyone has a hint or knowledge of this, please contact me immediately at pattycake1945@yahoo.com or respond on this website.

Thank you very much.

Patty

Yager family

I know there are a lot of Yager family resources and links online and I have looked at alot of them, but I have yet to find one that lists the same dates and names of people listed in my tree. I find too many of them with the same name and can't find the family that moved from Va to Ky to IN with all the right data so I don't know which one is mine. These Yager's are frustrating. There are just way, way too many of them and they have too many of the same name. lol

Please help me.

I have a Joseph R. Yager, born in KY about 1827 who marries a Sally Ann Seifer in Shelby County, Indiana in 1848. The census lists his parentage as father -born in Va and mother -born in KY. On familysearch I found a Joseph Yager with a father named James and 2 brothers, no mother listed.

I have found a James Yager, born 1795 in Madison Co., Va in the 1850 census in Shelby County. Wife is Nancy and looks like she is born in KY. I think this is the right family but now I am having trouble getting past James.

How do I connect James Yager to the rest of the Yager's living in Madison Co., Va? I've looked at a lot of pages and there are too many James' for me to know for sure which one is mine.

Anyone got any good sites or good info?

thanks
Julie

He wasn't mentioned by name in his father's will, he father just said " His five children ", but Charles was married 18 FEB 1817 in Hebron Church Madison, VA , so I would check the Germanna records. Not sure there is absolute proof.
