ALICE MARGUERITE AMACHER HOGAN

Alice Marguerite AMACHER HOGAN, 85, of Battle Ground, Wash., died March 28, 2009.

She was born Sept. 24, 1923 to Ernest and Frieda AMACHER in Portland. Her Swiss immigrant parents instilled a deep respect for her heritage and a strong work ethic. She grew up on dairy farms in Helvetia, Portland and Clark County, Wash. She graduated from Girls Polytechnic High School in Portland.

She then attended and graduated from Sacred Heart General School of Nursing in Eugene. Her career as a registered nurse inspired a zest for travel that continued throughout her life. She began working as a hospital surgical director in eastern Oregon, which led to her position at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Among her duties at the Mayo Clinic, she filled the role of flight nurse. Her adventures accompanying patients in the early days of air travel produced fascinating stories, as did her subsequent assignments overseas.

In 1962, while working with Dr. Leslie Frewing at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, she accepted a position with him to open a hospital surgery department for Guy F. Atkinson Company in Mangla, West Pakistan. Her position abroad was a groundbreaking effort for a single woman.

It was in Pakistan that she met her future husband, James Patrick HOGAN. They married in Hong Kong and went on to work for other construction companies in Vietnam, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic. She served as a nurse for Publisher's Paper Company in Oregon City, as well as at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Vancouver Memorial Hospital, and as a surgical and private duty nurse in Las Vegas. During her life, she also lived in Switzerland and Yachats before retiring in Battle Ground, Wash.

Wherever she worked, she found time to volunteer with local missionaries. She was known for her love of gardening. She enjoyed watching and identifying birds, baking Swiss specialties with her grandson, and playing Scrabble. She was devoted to her cat, William.

She was a member of Bethel Evangelical Methodist Church, Swiss Ladies Club and Portland Swiss. She spoke Swiss-German with her family and encouraged participation in cultural heritage events.

She is survived by her daughter, Margot (Greg) Hodge-Tinner of Brush Prairie, Wash.; grandson, Erich Hodges of Brush Prairie; nieces, Gretchen AMACHER and Heidi Samuels and nephew, Hans Bruce AMACHER.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Bethel Evangelical Methodist Church, 2309 NW Carty Road in Ridgefield, Wash.
