PIONEER RETIRES AT 78

"Uncle Henry" Heitman Spared by Indians in Wars of '50s.

WOODLAND, Wash., Jan. 29 - (Special) - "Uncle" Henry Heitman is visiting his nephews, Ed, George, Carl and William Goerig. Mr. Heitman is one of the oldest pioneers of this section, having settled in the Lewis River Valley above La Center on the East Fork of Lewis River in 1854, and has remained hereabouts ever since. In the Indian wars of 1855-6 "Uncle" Henry was the only white man permitted by the Indians to remain in the Lewis River country, but as he never had molested the Indians, the chief was friendly to him and protected him from harm. He remained constantly on his ranch above La Center until last year, when on account of his advanced age of 78 he sold his place and retired and now makes his home at Ridgefield, Wash.

In 1853 Mr. Heitman conducted a livery stable near what is now the site of the Union station in Portland, and grazed his horses in an inclosure there.
